I got so frustrated not being able to find fingernail clippers that I made a
rule that they always stay in one particular compartment in one desk drawer.

Me too, same with manicure scissors. It worked much better for me
after all my kids had grown up and left home. It's amazing how things
stay where they're put now. ;-)

How do you enforce it? In our house the major things that go missing
repeatedly: my mobile phone, my car keys, nail clippers, scissors, pens,
tape of all kinds, flash drives, camera batteries, one son's wallet, iPod,
phone... I have set places for everything and it really bugs me when I go to
use something and it is not there! It bugs me also that everyone has to go
searching for the one son's belongings 1 minute before he has to leave for
work. |

Well, we're both adults. We have a family of elves that finds us no matter
where we move to & they arbitrarily take things from us & given them back, so
normally we have an us against them thing going for us. But, we do each have
things that are 'just so' for each of us. I employ an ironic line like
wondering OUT LOUD where my clippers can have got off to, and use with it a
mock glare (that I perfected in college while being on the other side of
hazing) and a growl (that I perfected while training puppies.) Have you tried
that?

I should get my son to file his phone, wallet etc in alphabetical order?
What I have been attempting to do is train him to drop everything in one
spot, the same spot, every day, like I do. I am fine until someone touches
my keys or phone... |

One employer forced me to watch an asinine video on organization*
But it had one redeeming moment. A story about spending all day
trying to find their file on one of their vendors.
It was a dairy--they looked under dairy, milk, cream, the name of the
company, the name of the main contact, the city, the state, etc.
When the secretary came back from her day off, they begged her to find
that file FAST!
She turned around, opened a drawer, and handed it to them.
"How did you know where to look?!?"
(Tone of voice that says "you dummy"): "All of our vendors
are filed by the county where their headquarters is located."

There was an old episode of M*A*S*H on as I prepared the

Hehe, that sounds all too horribly familiar.

Try buying a caravan(trailer) or RV and take off for a year;
let the kids know you're letting the house out to tenants
while you're gone...they can apply to stay via your letting

change the locks every day, lock the fridge and disconnect cable TV,
put a pay lock on the bathroom door, make the washer and dryer coin
operated and take out all the phones and replace with a single pay
phone. Works in less than a week.

fail to move out of their own accord then you will have to forcibly
eject the lazy self-indulgent bastards :-)
