Default Lab results over the web

Several here have indicated that after they get their blood taken,
they can often look at the lab test results before their doctor's
appointment so they can prepare to discuss what might have turned up.

My doc has no problem giving me a paper copy of the lab results, and
this is actually quite an improvement over my appointments say 20
years ago where I didn't get to see the results at all.

A year or two ago my insurance company's (CIGNA) website said
something about making lab results available over their website, but
it never really happened. They did have a tracking tool where I could
type in numbers after my appointments but I really want the numbers
before.

So, for those who have it, what are the mechanics involved with
getting labwork done and seeing the results over the web? I think it'd
be pretty cool and it'd let me be a little more prepared for my
doctor's appointments. As it is, after my appointments I end up asking
some questions here instead of to my doc. Not that I don't get to ask
my doctor questions about the lab results, but I think I could have
more intelligent questions instead of just stupid questions!

Or am I completely missing the point (mistaking technology for
usefulness) and getting the lab results in advance of my appointments
instead of at my appointments wouldn't really help me get more done in
that appointment?

Tim.

For my own doc, he is also the phlebotomist so he sees them
as soon as they appear on his computer; that's how I got the
two phone calls back in '02.

I don't get mine over the web, but I do get a copy from my
doc about a week before major appointments with other
specialists.

In that situation it used to help me in the early days of
diagnosis to ask the right questions - things like whether
or not to cut statins, or whether I needed further CLL tests
etc. These days, with things pretty stable (tempting
fate...) it's not really necessary but I still do it.

A lot of labs will, if requested, mail you a copy of the lab results. I
routinely request a copy, and usually get it before the doc's office calls.

Hmmm! Do you know that all of your medical records are supposed to be
available to you in the United States? Ask and you shall receive. If your
doctor is uncooperative then something is very wrong.

In fact my doc always offers me a paper copy of my lab results at the
appointment.

I was just seeing if many others (or only a small number of others)
get to their lab numbers before the appointment. I've seen this
occasionally mentioned here and it makes me jealous :-).

I do. The endo's office sends them to me.

Have your doctor post them here in ASD for the experts to view.

Tim,

I think what the others mean is that they look at the "Labs Online" website
which tells you what the various tests taken were and what the ranges
should be.. I'm sure it's very popular to the run of the mill hypocondriac.
<g> As for my Lab, my doctor uses LabCorp. I usually have my blood
draw a week before my appointment or the day of my appointment and my
doctor sends me a copy in the mail a few days later along with any changes
she might have me making.. and any scripts I might need.

Hi Reisa, is this the link you're talking about?

http://www.labtestsonline.org/index.html

My endo sends me my lab reports and I have saved them over the years.
It's a nice "time capsule" of how one's hard work can pay off. Great
motivator to keep on keepin' on!

Kurt
