Default label reading problem

I have 2 "no sugar added" products with what, seems to me to be
conflicitng information on the nutrition label. the one, smuckers :sugar
free" raspberry jam, says 10 calories per Tbs(serving) and 5 grams of carb
per serving. If caarbs are 4 calories pe gram, this does not parse.

I second is Cary's "sugar free" syrup which lists 30 calories per 1/4 ?C
(a serving) and 12 carbs(11 sugar) , which also does not parse, as 30
calories would only allow for at most 7.5 grams of carb.

Is someone being dishonest here somewhere or am I just missing something?

Somewhat puzzled,

Wendy

Wendy,

I just looked at my jams, and their calorie/carb numbers match up, one
with a slight rounding factor.

Do your jams list any fiber? If so the fiber would be included in the
carb total, but since it is indigestible, does not add into calories.
This would explain the discrepancy.

The British system of not including fiber in the total carb count maeks
a lot more sense to me than the Americna system of including it.

I just looked at two different "sugar free" jams, one by Polaner and one
by Smuckers. Both list 10 calories /tbs and 5 grams of carb. Neither
lists any fiber on the label, but the ingredients lists include locust
bean gum. I'm not sure, but I think calories can be rounded; certainly,
way too many labels have calories/serving values that are multiples of
5. I don't know whether the standard elementary school rules of rounding
apply, or whether they can always round down. In any case, 10 would be
legitimate rounding down for a "real" value of 12.5 calories and
possibly for something up to 14.5 calories. Now, suppose the 5 grams of
carb is really 4.7 and that there's 1 gram of fiber in that gum from the
ingredients list...

The Smuckers says "5 gm of total carbs" on the front of the label so my
guess is some of the ingredients are sugar alcohols which do not have
the calories but definitely count as carbs. I tried the Smuckers but
it had twice the carbs and none of the berry taste that the Fifty-50
brand has.

I prefer the Howards brand, which has far lower carb ad calorie listings,
but Ihave only found it in one store near my summer home so if I run out,
I am stuck!

The ingredient labe is supposed to be the one that "counts, not the claims
on the front of the package. Sugar alcohols, whch are not listed the the
label of my Smuckers Rasberry, are always a subset of tehcarb grams in the
US.
