| | | Laid Up- Hello friends,
For those of you who may have been wondering where I have been for the
last week, or so, I have been laid up... Totally incapacitated.
Completely unable to walk. I have spent most of the last 5 days in
bed, and need a wheelchair just to go 50 ft.
After several hours in the docs office yesterday, the official Dx was
severe gout, related in major part to my diabetic friendly, relatively
low carb diet. Interestingly my doctor still supports the lower carb
diet for me, as a T2, but now the focus has to be upon finding a
different balance, especially taking into account the veggies that
produce more purines in the digestive/metabolic process....
In the mantime, this gout thing has been complete agony....
Still kicking,
Will, T2 |

I was about to ask.
So sorry to hear that Will. This diet thing can be such a
pain, literally, when our systems stop working to the design
standard. My friend with the gallstones would understand, on
a totally fat-free diet for the moment or severe pain is
instant.
Best wishes on a speedy recovery and a successful search for
a better way of eating that suits you.
Cheers, Alan, T2, Australia.

Get well soon Will. I was wondering where you were, and was hoping it
was something wonderful and exciting that was keeping you away. Sorry,
it's not. Take care.

Truly awful, Will. I hope it gets better soon & you can find a gout *&*
diabetes friendly diet. That you can stand. And that the veggies you have to
avoid aren't the ones you like most.

Damn!
I first had gout when I was in my early twenties. At the time my
doctor could hardly believe it since I only weighed about 125 pounds
at the time. He told me what foods to avoid and gave me medication. I
wasn't laid up like you but it was still pretty darned miserable. I
went about ten years or so before having another episode. The biggest
problem then was that as a letter carrier I was walking 96 blocks five
days a week. I managed to do it, but it wasn't fun. I had to keep
working since I hadn't been with the post office long enough to build
up much sick leave.
I feel for you friend. I hope that you now have it under control and
will be able to keep it that way.
Take care and be well.

Sorry to hear that. My FIL had gout and it was very painful for him. |

| | | Re: Laid Up- Sorry to hear that Will From personal experience a change in diet did
nothing to alleviate it for me. What did alleviate it was dropping the
"fluid" pill that was designed as a BP med (can't remember the name) and
going on to a real BP med. It was common to treat BP first with that kind of
water drug.
You might find otherwise but I really did not have any relief from dropping
the purine-containing foods. |

A low carb diet, below 130 grams per day, can be a double whammy to a person
susceptible to gout.
First, a low carb diet leads to the buildup of ketones in the blood.
Ketosis can raise uric acid levels. Second, many foods that are eaten to
replace the energy of carbohydrates are rich in purines (meat, poultry,
seafood, nuts, eggs, some vegetables) and are later broken down into uric
acid in the body.
Health experts express concern over the long-term safety of low carb diets
and believe they increase the risk of diseases such as heart disease,
cancer, renal disease, gout and osteoporosis.

Well, that sucks! Let's hope it goes away fast. Did some googling..... seems
that you can eat this for that...... but it can cause the other.... so, eat
that for the other but, of course, it's bad for this. Luckily, you're safe
with fish, but it can lend to the causes of Gout.... not to worry, though,
there are plenty of things you can eat to help prevent Gout.... but, they
cause artery disease... I guess you're seeing that you can't win.
Get well quick.

Sorry to hear this Will. When my son was suspected to be haivng gout the
diet he was put on was kind of the diet from Hell, as he had to stay off
almost all lower carb meats, fish and vegetables. no salmon, red meats,
etc. I hope you can find some kind of balance to control both. Have you
been put on a med for th condition? That may help adn let you eat a bit
more diabetic friendly foods.

Owowowow! Poor you! I do hope you find a way of eating that controls
both the gout and the diabetes.

You know I hate to say this, but this might be one of those rare times when
a dietician might be able to help. I know you have a problem. My husband has
gout. His doctor put him on colchicine, a drug you don't want to take for
any longer than absolutely necessary to knock down the uric acid. He was
also put on allopurinol at the same time and it is now the maintenance drug
of choice. He doctor says that one is OK for long term use. Because of this
regimen he is able to eat a normal diet. Every so often he has a blood test
to see that there are problems developing. He has had gout for 7 years.
Good luck, Will.

Not having memorized the dates, I was assuming you were traveling with
your son. What a rotten complication, and so very painful. 'A different
