Does anyone know of a way to lower it that worked for them? I have seen
some supplements listed online. One was red rice yeast. I did try that
some years ago. Didn't seem to do a thing. Isn't it a statin?
Polycosomethingorother was also listed. I think I tried that too. Don't
think it helped.
Also saw to quit eating refined foods which I mostly have but there are
those days when I am not digesting well and that is about all I can eat. So
I can't really change that.
Just placed another order for supplements. $230 and hopefully most of what
I ordered will last me for 3 months. But I did up my pills again tonight
and it looks like I will soon need to be placing another order. I don't
really want to take more supplements but I also refuse to take a statin or
Welchol or Zetia. Is there some other med I don't know about?
Niacin didn't help me either. Just gave me the hot flashes.

Check with your doctor to see if he has a sample 1 month pack of
Lovaza - prescription fish oil. That is the cheapest way to see if it
works. It brought my numbers down. You have to jump through some
hoops though for Express Scripts to pay for it if you want to
continue. It's explained online.
A friend uses Costco/Kirkland Omega-3 Fish Oil 1000 mg. and it works
for him.
No fishy taste on either pill, but they must be about the largest gel
cap in the world!<G>

Lovaza is really Omega-3 with a higher price tag and with a
prescription. I checked into Lovaza as against Omega-3 and found that
you would have to take twice as much of Lovaza to get the same benefit
as Omega-3. That will double the price all over again. I haven't
discovered any reason to bother with any of the newer attempts of the
drug industry to replace supplements to get higher prices.
The ad for Lovaza actually says it's concentrated, so that tells you
how much truth you'll find in advertising.
http://www.lovaza.com/benefits-of-lo...on-needed.html
A caution...Omega-3 (and Lovaza) will act as a blood thinner. Check
with your doctor to be sure of using either.
I've used Omega-3 for 6 years (2000mg daily) as a blood thinner and
I know it works about the same as Plavix for me. It would probably
also compete with Warfarin, but would be somewhat safer than the
prescription drugs. Be careful telling physicians about your using
these compounds. They seem to think they aren't necessary to think
about, including the blood thinning effect. You have to beat the bony
prominence on their shoulders enough to get the message through that
Omega-3 actually thins blood.
Good Luck,

My diet seems to be doing the trick: lots of salads, small protein
servings, and very little carb-dense food .

Omega 3 fish oil from a health food store.
Also watch the type of fats that you eat. Some processed foods
are worse than others. Read the ingredients. *No*
trans fats like shortening or margarine. Anything that says
"hydrogenated" is a trans fat. Also no dairy fat: no ice
cream, cheese, butter. Instead use olive oil, coconut oil, or
sesame oil. There is a really good ice cream replacement made
from coconut milk. Also a decent dairy free cream cheese.
Be sure all oils are fresh, and keep them to a minimum.
Robb Wolf's /The/ /Paleo/ /Solution/, and Dr. Lindeberg's
/Food/ /and/ /Western/ /Disease/ are the best books
I have found so far.

Red rice yeast can be effective because it contains a natural statin,
(lovostatin I believe).
Problem was that much of the commercial products available were low
quality and did not have much of the natural statin content.
As I recall, Bluebonnet had a product that was high quality.
Saturated and trans fat will increase ldl production. This is firmly
established.

Lowering LDL isn't really an appropriate goal unless it's done by
natural body adjustments made in response to improved diet or health.
I'd worry about high TGL and low HDL as risk markers.
A chief of cardiology has told both MIL and I, with our very high LDL
that with our low TGL and high HDL, we have nothing to worry about. I
keep the bad stuff, VLDL, to a minimum with very low carbs, plenty of
protein and fats.

I can't eat much salad because I don't digest them. And I can't do low
carb. It raises my BG.

Thanks but I am intolerant to all fish so I can't have that. I did try
krill oil. The smell just gagged me and it didn't seem to help.

I have to eat margarine because I can't have any dairy. I don't like any
kind of frozen treats or cream cheese. I also have to avoid soy which means
most faux dairy is out. But I do sometimes eat Daiya cheese. I use very
little oil in my cooking. Mainly coconut or olive.

Julie, I read the answers, fishoil is indeed good for that.
I cant take fishoil either (bowel-problems) but what I _can_ take is a
kind of capsule which _contains_ omega3 (on the bottle of capsules is
mentioned that these capsules contains fishoil), there is no taste to
these capsules. I get the bottle of capsules (OTC) at the drugstore.

Yes but I am intolerant to fish. I did take fishoil many years ago before I
knew this. Didn't seem to help me any. I do take omega 3 in the form of
flax but again it doesn't seem to help me.

I take soy lecithin capsules for my cholesterol control and it's been far
better than fish oils, including the omega 3.
But they smell worse than the fish oil capsules.
And, of course, YMMV.

Hmmm... I wonder if other forms of lecithin would work? It mostly comes
from soy or egg but I can't have either. I do have soy lecithin in some
foods and supplements but it is a very small amount. I wouldn't dare take
it as a stand alone supplement because of the effect on my thyroid.

From more recent studies and from specialists in cholesterol, it is
likely that 'control' or lowering of cholesterol of any kind (LDL or
HRL) is not necessary, which would solve the problem of the moment.
Many doctors and researchers now have pointed out that the body needs
cholesterol and only a very small percentage may need to lower it.

I don't recall whether you said you had tried digestive enzymes
ie pancreatin. These are specific enzymes secreted by the pancreas
to digest fat and protein. My blood work showed zero for these.
My doctor completely ignored this, but I saw it and started taking
them. It did a lot for my digestion. I can tolerate a lot more
meat and fat than before. Not as much gas and burping either.

If it is a prescription then no. I can't take any digestive aids with
bromelian. Causes extreme burping and stomach pain. I was taking PDA but
then I found HCL at Swansons. Pretty much the same stuff but not quite as
strong. And a lot cheaper.

Would pancreatin be the same as Pancrease HL?
It certainly is a prescription medicine overhere.

Rx: A medical prescription. The symbol "Rx" is usually said to stand
for the Latin word "recipe " meaning "to take." It is customarily part
of the superscription (heading) of a prescription.
Another explanation for the origin of Rx is that it was derived from
the astrological sign for Jupiter which was once placed on
prescriptions to invoke that god's blessing on the drug to help the
patient recover.

Rx (in the USA, at least) means that it's a prescription drug.

Usually Colt "replies" to the person's posting that is just before
Colt's reply in the thread. That would be me.

Invoke Jupiters blessing, thats nice. Nowadays I often see on the
leaflet (that goes with the medicine): "You must trust this medicine to
be good for your (otherwise it wont do you any good) "..
Beliefsystems..
The placebo effect is always there.. :-?
