Default Le bummer

One of my favorite breakfasts, a regular sausage burrito from McDonald's
(yeah, they're gross, but so good!), has been fine for me up till now.
Today, 1-1/2 hours post breakfast, I am at 159. I guess that's not a treat
I'll be having from now on. I'll be making my own with low carb tortillas
and home ingredients rather than the Micky D's version.

I guess this kind of discovery is going to go on for a long time to come,
eh?

Yep, the discoveries do last for awhile. Heck, I've been at this for nearly
3 years and just discovered pineapple does a number--a bad number--on me.
When I'd tested it before at 1 hour, I'd missed the spike, which is actually
occurring at least 20 minutes earlier. Happened to test 40 minutes after
I'd eaten pineapple (but still 1 hour after the start of the meal) and got a
213 on my meter. Eke! Like you, I won't be doing that again!

It'll be better for you all the way around, and you never know -- you
might like it more! My son makes a killer breakfast burrito -- when I
can get him into the kitchen. ;-)

Yup. But you won't always be in the dark, so to speak. It won't be
long before you'll know something is a bad idea -- and it will only be
a question of *how* bad. ;-)

Good luck!

That depends. It might be fine if after you eat it you go shopping and
spend hours walking around department stores or stores in a mall. I
used to treat myself to pizza when I was going to spend the afternoon
shopping, and my BG would be fine.

Remember it's not just what you eat. It's when you eat it and what you
do after you eat it, along with so much more (where you are in your
cycle, if you're coming down with something, what meds you're taking --
not just diabetic meds, etc.).

Bad news..yes most of your favorites from eating out will be bad for
you...good news is..you will learn the ones u make yourself are better
tasting..much better for you since you know whats really in it...and cost
alot less.

If i recall the mcdonolds one has those potato nugget thingies in it..made
with sugar and potato and flour...the sausages prob got alot of bad junk in
them as well.

Odd thing about mcdonolds is i can make a huge burger at home for the same
ccalories as thier plain kids burger...dunno how they cram so many calories
and fat grams into thier food..sorta gross if you examine it.

They must add chemicals and process each and every item they make..i suppose
all the extra fat and salt and carbs crammed in makes their junk addictive
or somthing.

You got me motivated there, Donna! I'll start experimenting with those foods
I would otherwise not dream of eating - just to see what the exact pp bg
reading is! I might strt with a large bowl of rice, then a large serving of
potato chips.... Maybe a few bread rolls.... I know they're not that good,
but I wonder what the exact bg would be? Actually, even that may not give me
the EXACT figure - maybe I should try each a FEW times, like three or four -
then get the average! Actually, after this I'll bash my toe with a hammer -
just to see how big the bruise gets!

Jokes aside, though - there are some foods I KNOW are BAD for me, and I
don't really want to research the badness. There are two types of carbs -
bad and horrible.

But I do recall my early days as a diabetic - after the usual session with a
doctor and dietitian, I was left with this "fat is bad, sweet things are
bad" approach, and it took the MHD newsgroup and my meter to wake me up to
it that all carbs are bad. I used to have a lot of favourite foods which I
realised I could no longer have. Now I have a whole lot of different
favourites which do not spike my bg.

This is not that super dooper jumbo burrito; it's a smaller one that has
sausage, peppers, eggs, and cheese in it. Regardless, you're right; I can
make one that's better with my low carb tortillas.

That's what it feels like once in a while, even with the joking intended.
I'm not letting anything get me down, though. If I don't experiment with
things I "think" are okay, I'll never know. My meter is my best buddy right
now. I have one upstairs and one downstairs so there's no excuse for me
forgetting, right?

I rarely eat fast food anyway, so it's not a huge deal to give it up or
take it in extremely small doses. I doubt very seriously I'll keep carrying
my hammer around and bashing my toe, so to speak. I have a lot to learn,
but I'm getting there.

I did your test almost by accident last night. For a while
now, 3 or 4 times a week, I've been eating a half-cup of my
muesli/psyllium/nuts mix with a little milk at bedtime.
Great for regularity and helps with my dawn effect BGs. When
I've tested an hour after that I rarely go over 6.5(117).

Last night I had run out of my mix so I decided to use my
wife's breakfast cereal, Sultana Bran. After all, it's
high-fibre and supposedly good for us...

So I had the same portion size, which is actually less food
because it is less dense than my mix, with a little milk. An
hour later, 9.6(172). And this morning 6.6(119); the first
time I've been over 6 for fasting in quite a while.

Not an experiment I intend repeating.

Cheers, Alan, T2, Australia.
