Default A Letter to OneTouch® Ultra® Test Strip Customers

I just got a letter from Lifescan about a stick recall concerning a
hole in the side of OTU stick vial. The damn letter is dated
5/23/2007, and today is mid June. A two month wait is always nice to
know.

From May 23rd to June 8 is 2 weeks, not 2 months.

Interesting point: I went to the link, and the notice on the web site dated
the "notification" or "warning" or whatever back to April. I use this
product and haven't seen a message yet, except here.

I got mine a couple of weeks ago or more, I think.

You prolly had to register your meter to get it.

The letter is dated 4/23/07, a typo. The website is also dated
4/23/07. When accu chek had a recall on the Aviva meter a year or so
ago, they were much quicker.

I got a letter a couple of weeks ago from Caremark, which is where I get my
prescriptions (mail order). I never got anything from Lifescan.

Letter or no letter, it just stands to reason not to use test strips
from a vial that is not airtight. Moisture is the great enemy of the
strips, and so the vials have a liner that is really a desiccant. If
air continually gets in via a hole in the vial, the natural moisture
in the air would quickly deplete the desiccant. That's also why you
shouldn't keep the vial open too long when removing a strip.

The letter is dated 4/23/07. There is no typical postage date stamp
on the envelope - metered I guess. At the bottom right of the
envelope there is a barcode arrangement with some lettering to the
left. The lettering is unreadable since there is a bold font stamp
stating - URGENT: MEDICAL DEVICE RECALL masking the lettering.

Yes, I got my letter the end of May. Certainly not a 2 month wait.
Besides, I really didn't think it was that "urgent" of a letter considering
it's common sense not to use a vial with a hole in it. I always inspect
my vials when I get my boxes of strips. Then I combine 2 vials of 25
strips together so it's easier for me and I'm not changing vials every
few days.

Hey, just be glad you got a message. It means that people are taking
you seriously. However, I must tell you this, I never got a message,
and I'm still doing fine with my strips. :-)

Yep I got mine right after I signed up for the free meter replacement.
Howeever I have been getting the warning with my strips for a while now.
Anyway I think I would immediately take a vial of strips back to the
pharmacy that had holes in the vial letter or no letter.

I've been tempted to do that too (combine 2 vials for convenience,
provided of course that they have the same code number). But I think
that the desiccant in the lining of the vial has a limited life -- I'm
sure it's designed for 25 openings of the vial, with a safety margin,
but 50 openings might be too much. Each time you open the vial, the
desiccant is exposed to air containing moisture. When enough moisture
depletes the desiccant, then the strips won't stay dry enough, and
could give wrong results. This, after all, was precisely the issue
involving the vials with holes, which prompted the recall.

I've been doing that for the past 6yrs, just about every 2 weeks and I've
yet to have a funky reading. There are times that I get a funny reading,
but I've retested and it's always been just "me" --- not enough blood on
strip, or strip not in all the way.. And yes, I'll only combine them if
they're
the same strip code.. I usually do the combining when I open a new box
of 50.

Did you register the meter with Lifescan? If not, they have no idea
if you have a OTU. Accu chek people know me real well since I bitch
at them so often about their meters reading high.

Mine was registered. Actually, my husband and I each have one, and
normally, whenever there's something they want us to know, we get too
letters. Full disclosure: my Mister reads the mail and ruthless purges us
of junk mail, but he knows this isn't junk. We didn't see anything. I just
got a new shipment (he only tests three times a week, and now, with more
injections, I have to test 6 times a day, except every so often I forget,
sigh) and have checked it over. I didn't see anything like the pix on the
web site.

Thanks again to whoever shared this in the first place. Whether the world
is a big place or a small place depends on the size of your community, and I
think we have a close community here, though we're spread to the four winds.
