Default Letter and what's happening today on capitol hill.

Dear Mack,

Thanks to the support of our Diabetes Advocates, the Stem Cell
Research Enhancement Act (H.R. 3) passed the House of Representatives
last week in a vote of 253-174. We want to thank you for getting us
this vote! The vote last year on this bill was 238-194, so we have
made important gains in the House. Prior to voting, the House defeated
a motion (189-238) that would have placed severe restrictions on
institutions where somatic cell nuclear transfer research takes place.

With diabetes contributing to an estimated 224,000 deaths each year,
we must give our leading scientists the opportunities to expand their
research for a cure, including research on embryonic stem cells, which
offers much promise. The American Diabetes Association believes stem
cell research should be encouraged, and that public funds both at the
state and federal level should be made available for appropriate,
ethically-conducted research using a wide spectrum of stem cells,
including animal, human, adult, and embryonic.

What’s Next?

On Friday, January 19 the Senate will hold a joint stem cell hearing,
“Can Congress Help Fulfill the Promise of Stem Cell Research?” The
Senate is expected to then take up the Stem Cell Research Enhancement
Act (S. 5) within the next few weeks.

The American Diabetes Association will be encouraging the Senate not
to alter the bill so that it can receive a straight up-or-down vote.
When this happens, we will once again need your support to show that
our support for stem cell research is strong!

As a Buddhist, I do not approve of killing embryos for the purpose of
harvesting stem cells. I also do not approve of abortion for any
reason.

I do approve of harvesting stem cells from embryos or fetuses that
were killed for reasons other than the harvesting of stem cells.

> Hi Mack,

There was some legislation passed in Australia just recently allowing stem
cell research.

Interestingly, I was watching a morning talk show the other morning which
spoke about research by some US researchers have discovered a way to harvest
stem cells from amniotic fluid( If I find a link for this one I'll post it
later).
