| | | lithotripsy followup Had my lithotripsy on Monday morning, bright and early and was home by
about 10:30. Doc told my wife that everything went fine. He had her beat
me twice daily for a few days (well, that sounds better, doesn't it -
actually she 'cupped' her hands and moved up and down over the kidney
area) to help move the pieces along. I was very tired until yesterday -
but we do seem to be collecting lots of little pieces - I've had kidney
stones before but never was able to collect anything; so that is
promising. At any rate, feel pretty much back to normal today. During the
entire process I was able to keep BG levels pretty much in control, so I'm
thankful for that. I'll be resuming my cycling as weather permits.
Thanks for your thoughts and concerns. |

Hi Ray,
Glad you checked in and things are going well during your recovery
period. Wanted to say good job for maintaining good BG control during
what has to be a stressful episode to say the least.

Hi Ray,
Glad to hear you are on the mend.
Hubby has had lithotripsy about 4 times so far. So I do sympathize. He
had one stone removed surgically years ago, the lithotripsies in the
meantime and his last one was done with a laser, since it was too far down
the ureter for the lithotripter machine to get to. He's been through hell
with his kidney stones.
Be sure to get the list of foods from your doctor to avoid, which form
stones, and drink tons of water. We get bottled water from Culligan that
has been purified with reverse osmosis, because it is nearly mineral free.
A few other water companies also offer it. In fact I think Poland Spring
has it in the regular grocery store, but it has a green label on it.
Diet helps, but I still have to hound him to drink enough water. There is
a book out there called "No More Kidney Stones" and you can probably find it
on Amazon. It really is the definitive word on how not to form new ones.
Now is the time to look into it, since you are probably quite motivated not
to get any more.

Mine was 7mm - urologist told me that 5 or smaller will usually pass.

From what I understand, there are generally a couple of different types of
stones. I've never found any particles before (I've had kidney stones
several times, but never required lithtripsy before). This time I've
collected quite a pile, so hopefully we'll have more to go on. I intend to
inquire about the water - ours is quite hard. I've always been quite good
about keeping myself hydrated.

I'll try to look it up. Will consult with the docs, obviously. One online
recommendation I found was that they often advise less animal protein.
That would be rather difficult to accomodate - we'll see what the doc
advises. |

Hi Ray,
Different kinds of stones require different diets, but the most important
thing in every single kind of stone is to drink tons of water. The doc
that wrote the book says that.
The reverse osmosis purified water is the best for your kidneys, and it
tastes fantastic too. Look for it in the supermarket, it is often the
first one to sell out. We get it delivered by Culligan in 5 gal bottles,
but they also keep our house water treatment system up and running, so it
isn't a separate trip. We live in the country and have well water, with so
much equipment to purify it you wouldn't believe it. But the R/O water is
a must. Between my high blood pressure and his kidney stones, we think it
is best.
