| | | Low Blood Sugar Question I have been feeling weird for awhile. I am in a confused disoriented
state most of the time (it almost feels like I have had a few drinks
but not as fun). I recently made an appointment with my doctor, but I
still have a week before my appointment. I am 30 years old, about
145lbs, I have to go to the bathroom a lot (however I do drink lots of
water), I also have problems with my vision getting blurry at times. I
bought a one touch glucose meter from wal-mart just to see if my blood
suger was low. I was feeling a little off when I tested it (which
wasnt as bad as I usually get) and my blood suger was 96. This was a
little over an hour after I had eaten. Is this low? I am going to
keep track every day so I can present this information to my doctor
next week. If this is low what can I do to help raise it a little. I
am in pretty good shape I eat good and exercise a few times a week. I
dont know if blood surger is my problem, but it could be. If anyone
has any suggestions I would appreiciate it. |

96 isn't low. It's a perfectly normal number although the high side of
normal. Still not one that would get you diagnosed with diabetes. Do go to
the Dr. and keep checking your BG. Try checking at two hours after eating. |

No. That is not low - it's high. Average for a healthy non-diabetic
(according to at least one expert) is 83+-3. Under 70 is generally
considered to be low. |

| | | Re: Low Blood Sugar Question Thats interesting that you say 96 is on the high side. i checked it
about 45 minutes after I had gotten the 96 reading and it was up to
105. Im definately going to the doctor no matter what. diabetes does
not run in my family. but, the problems that i am having make me think
it could be a blood sugar issue.

The diary is an excellent idea. If you take a couple of fasting
readings in the early morning during your week, and keep on testing an
hour after meals - particularly ones with lots of carbohydrate, like
breakfast - your doc should get a good picture. 96 is high, but not
stupidly so; hopefully you can catch it early.
Come back and let us know what the doc says, huh?

I woulld say tracking your blood sugar is a good thing, but 96 is
really pretty good for an hour after eating, and is not considered low
by any means. I would not postpone a trip to your doctor for a
checkup. It could be you are suffering from something other than
hypoglycemia or diabetes... Self diagnosis can be dangerous. Yes, your
symptoms do sound suspicious... all the more reason for that checkup.
Good luck,

| | | Re: Low Blood Sugar Question You could be suffering from what's termed a "relative hypoglycemia".
Even if your blood sugar is in the normal range, you body's ability to
metabolize glucose could be impaired, hence a diagnosis of diabetes
could still apply. Your symptoms do match hypoglycemia. Do you
experience hyperventilation as well?
I suggest you buy some glucose tablets from your pharmacy or
supermarket. Whenever you are feeling weak or disoriented take a few
of these and see if that helps.
It could provide some relief whilst your doctors figure out what to do. db-247@hotmail.com wrote:

Your symptoms could be any number of things. Your age and weight
along with the 96 you state aren't suggestive of diabetes especially T1
but possible early T2 or could be completely normal. Not everyone runs
in the 80's. You could be fighting off an infection, stress or changes in
the body which would cause a slight rise in glucose in the body. A 96,
is completely NORMAL glucose reading not even in the impaired range.
If you're worried, have your doctor check you out. You also don't mention
how many carbs you ate when you got the 96 and as for a rise of 105, that
is perfectly normal and within range of meter variance and actually could
be the same as the 96. If you went from 96 to 126, then that would be a
change. Our glucose, same as our blood pressure changes minute by
minute as well as you'll never have the same reading at the same time
even if you eat the same thing. It's not like our temperature that remains
constant unless something is wrong.

Home glucometers are not precise enough to assume that 96 and 105 aren't
representations of the same actual BG figure. They are allowed to have
a 15% deviation from exact precision.
I think that most doctors would poo-poo any self-diagnosis based on
those numbers. They would consider them normal. I'd punch up the
report of symptoms in order to get some proper lab testing and mention
the home testing only in passing. It might prove to be a red herring to
them. ("Oh, then he can't be diabetic, so I don't need to do that group
of tests.")
Good luck, and please keep us posted.

| | | Re: Low Blood Sugar Question db. we all wish we could have a number like 96. You may go lower . You
should really test on a fast and see how you are. say four hours after
lunch.
You could be hypoglycemic or diabetic.
Please keep us informed.

| | | Re: Low Blood Sugar Question Thanks for all the feedback. After testing my blood sugar for a few
days it appears that I feel better the lower it goes and I am in a more
confused state the higher it gets. However, it still could be
unrelated to the blood sugar level especially since it is not really
that high. I really need to check it for a longer period of time and
talk to my doctor before making any conclusions. I did try the
suggestion of glucose tabs. Since my glucose level was ok but I was
feeling a little weird I just took half of one. At first I got a big
rush, but after about 20 minutes or so I actually started feeling
pretty good. It also appeared that my circulation in my fingertips
improved significantly within a few minutes after I had taken it. Like
I said earlier I dont know if this really has anything to do with my
body's sugar level or not. I definately need some professional test to
determine the cause.
