| | | Low carb diet and diabetes There is great new article on control of diabetes with low carb diet
at http://www.diabeteshealth.com/read/2007/08/22/5383.html. However I
have a friend who went on a totally low carb diet and substituted her
diet completely with proteins and fats. After a few months of weight
loss her diabetes worsened and she was recommended complex
carbohydrates (such as parboiled brown rice) to substitute her food.
She is better now. I would appreciate more inputs on this aspect. Has
someone elso also had similar experiences? |

Hi mamtarai,
I am a clinician and I know that complex carbohydrates are essential
for some patients to delay absoption of nutrients from the intestine.
I am sure you know that proteins and fats can convert to glucose.
Usually this convertion is an energy requiring process and therefore
synthesis of glucose will only be in amounts needed by the body. We
have seen that overexpression of genes in the biosynthetic pathway in
some patients skews the biosynthetic processes and such patients
suffer a diabetic relapse like symptoms despite a low carb diet.
Complex carbohydrates with medication is the best option for such
patients |

You apparently haven't been here for long. Do a search and you'll find that
low carb diets have been discussed extensively here. Works for some. Not
others. There is no one diet we all follow. However, it is not advised for
ANYONE to eat just protein and fats. One needs the vitamins and minerals in
low carb vegetables as well. |

If you're going to play Dorothy Dix, it's wise to set it up
so one of you is Dorothy and the other is Dix.

Was really with a clinician friend who answered it for me. I am
surprised you guys noticed it. I was just testing if the replies to
this post would work.
Thanks pointing it out though. |

It's probably best not to eliminate carbs from the diet. Even Dr. Berstein
recommends 30 grams/day. |

there is a major difference between low carb and attempting to go zero
carb.

I don't know of anyone who seriously advocates zero carb, except those
in dire emergency, or perhaps cat people... and maybe Eskimos in the
winter.
