Dunno about diabetics but a young friend of ours (19 years old) got a sudden
unstoppable nosebleed a few weeks ago. Two days later the petechiae on the
legs. His mum took him to the doc and got a blood test and within a couple
of hours the doc rang and said get to the hospital immediately, his platelet
count was 1!
In his case it is presumed it was the alcohol he has been drinking. They
gave him
prednisone immediately and he was up to 30, then they let him home
on oral prednisone. It went up to 69 and has hovered in that area for nearly
two weeks. They also think he has been running low for quite some time.
Its a wait and see for him at the moment but the docs aren't suspecting
leukemia.
I know it doesn't answer your question but as you are aware, there is more
than one cause for low platelets - I have never heard anything about
diabetics being more prone..
