Default A low reading.

Had a brunch of leftovers from New Years Eve. About 6 blue diamond
almond crackers with humus, a small piece of sausage and a piece of
cheese. I only had two drinks last night during the celebration, so I
am feeling darned good this morning. I have not bothered taking any
reading as my fasting readings are solidly in the mid to high 5s. I go
downstairs to do some treadmill work. About 25 minutes in I feel like I
am going to faint and start seeing blue circles in the middle of both
eyes. I stop and sit down. my reading is 2.6. My hands are still
shaking as I type this and I am still feeling faint. I thought type 2s
on no meds are not supposed to get hypo.... I had better eat something.
I'll eat and re-test.

Anyone can have a hypo. Many of us had reactive hypoglycemia prior to
diabetes so we are more prone to hypos than others are. And alcohol can
cause hypos later than you'd expect.

In future I suggest taking a reading before starting exercise. I once
put myself into a sleepy, sick to the stomach with hands shaking low by
eating something sweet at work, then coming home and shoveling snow just
as the reactive hypo was hitting. Man I felt lousy! And stupid when I
realized what had happened. I didn't take a reading when I figured out
what was going on. I just got myself downstairs and something sweet in
my mouth, asap. Took about an hour before I was truly feeling myself
again. Now I'll test before doing anything as strenuous as that. 25
minutes on the treadmill could suck up some glucose, depending on the
angle and speed.

I used to mess myself up all the time in NY when shoveling snow. Because
for me, a hypo can involve getting hot and sweaty, this is one symptom I
would not necessarily notice. I usually started out shoveling with my coat
on, but very quickly took it off because I would get overheated. So there I
would be, shoveling away with just hat and gloves on. Okay, the rest of my
clothes too. And boots... But I could not figure out why I felt so lousy
and weak and would just keep on going, telling myself that there wasn't that
much left to do. Then I'd wonder why my BG was so darned high.
