last night to do it. Monday night is the only time of the week I drink
alcohol. From now on, I'm only going to test on Tuesday mornings.

I am only half joking. Damages caused by excess amounts of alcohol are
often very long lasting or even permanent.

Americans killed in the occupation of Iraq as of July 08, 2007 is 3,606.
United Kingdom = 159 Other = 128.
How many more Americans must die to satisfy Bush's ego?
Let us all pray for Bush - God knows he needs it!
As of July 10, 2007 it has been 1532 days since Bush
while standing in front of the banner which was sent
to the ship by the White House saying MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

allies have prevailed." IOW MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.
Isn't Bush's "surge" of troops working well?
Pay attention to the frequency of American deaths since it began.

Simply shows how wrong it is for a type-2 diabetic to be guided by
only a glucometer without a food scale.
Drinking alcohol in lieu of eating is a bad thing.
The suppression of hunger is telling.
May GOD bless you in HIS mighty way, making you healthier (hungrier)
than ever.
Prayerfully in Jesus' awesome love,

So is the damage caused by consistently waking with blood glucose above
110. Probably much worse than the damage caused by drinking alcohol
once per week.

Uh, John, how were you feeling this morning?
Chuck is right... too much of a good thing can turn into a bad thing,
sometimes.
Don't meant to throw cold water on your fun, though... sounds like you

Ha, etc... ;-)
Actually, I cannot take credit for that form of reply... The first
time I saw it was in a book entitled "The Paper Men", by William
Golding, who also wrote "Lord of the Flies".
Golding was an amazing man in real life, and he wrote quite a lot that
is worth reading, even today, after his death some years ago. Toward
the end of his career, he won the Nobel Prize in literature, about the
time "Paper Men" came out.
Here is a link to a very nice website about him and his work. http://www.william-golding.co.uk/works.html
Sorry, John, I cannot help myself. It just came out, and I thought you
might enjoy reading "The Paper Men".

I remember when Lord of the Flies came out as a movie, and thinking, how are
they going to do that? Well, as far as I'm concerned, they didn't....lol.
Nothing against English film making but it would probably make a very good
movie..... an American version, that is.

Just read the book, John... I think you may relate in quite unforeseen
ways... It is really a fun read, also, but I have found myself
thinking about it for years later, and I have re-read it several times
over the years...
Golding also wrote lots of other good stuff, including "The
Inheritors", another one of profound insight and well worth the effort
of reading...
Did I tell you that I read a lot? Normally, about 3-5 books per
week.... Sometimes more, sometimes less.

I rarely read, anymore..... since the internet. I still have many of the
books I've read through the years... many genres (eclectic being a gross
understatement). A few months ago one of the bookshelves in the dining room
colapsed... leaving only two there and three in the spare bedroom plus a
closet full in boxes I didn't bother to unpack when I moved here 10 years
ago. Mostly paperbacks.... people make fun of me for keeping them.... except
when they borrow hundreds of them over the years without returning them.
When I was very young I never kept books I'd read. Occasionally, I'll wish I
had them now..... then I wonder why.
There are only a few books I wish I still had. Someday I will order them and
throw all the rest away.....lol

Oh, John... Please do not wait.
Did you know that Johnny Cash, a diabetic, in the end died, sitting in
a sumptuous library in his own home, and not being able to read a
word... That is straight from his daughter.
Don't wait, John... Reading is a gift from the gods.

Sorry about all the typos, John... I try, really I do... I hardly ever
type anything the way I mean for it to go.
I just do not see so well myself.
Please read all you can, while you can... That is the best advice I

Very true, Will. I have had so much trouble reading
this past year that I have almost given up. And I was
a voracious reader. We are going to try new lenses
to get some better correction. But one eye is
essentially useless.
Listen to him, John. He is our troop leader!

Sorry John. From the tone of your earlier post I thought you had tied
one on. When you posted how little you actually drank I found out that
you are a so-called social drinker, or normal drinker. I never have
understood people like that. If you don't drink enough to get at least
half in the bag, why bother at all?
(These words are from a man who has been in recovery for over 28 years
and that few drinks still makes no sense at all to me.)

Americans killed in the occupation of Iraq as of July 08, 2007 is 3,606.
United Kingdom = 159 Other = 128.
How many more Americans must die to satisfy Bush's ego?
Let us all pray for Bush - God knows he needs it!
As of July 10, 2007 it has been 1532 days since Bush
while standing in front of the banner which was sent
to the ship by the White House saying MISSION ACCOMPLISHED
declared,"In the Battle of Iraq, the United States and our
allies have prevailed." IOW MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.
Isn't Bush's "surge" of troops working well?
Pay attention to the frequency of American deaths since it began.

The beers, while grilling out, are the obligatory "guy" thing. The wine,
with dinner, is pretentiousness. George, my dog, looks to me as a role
model. I would never allow him to see me intoxicated.

Strange things like taste, flavour, enjoyment...
If the only purpose in drinking was to get drunk then pure
ethanol would do the trick. I prefer Shiraz or Merlot or
Cabernet Sauvignon, but stop well before the "buzz" point.

Thanks so much, TaniO....
I just wanted to help John, and anyone else who might be reading.
I do not claim to be the leader of anyone, except perhaps those who
might think there is something worthwhile in what I may have to
contribute.
I would say the real leaders, as far as I can discern, are Quentin and
Alan S. They really do a lot to keep our group going, and they help us
process through difficult times in so many ways that are totally
beyond counting.
The important thing to my mind is that it takes all of us... You,
TaniO are just as important as anyone.... and I am, while perhaps
visible, am among the least... We are all great, because we care
enough to be here.

Hello you, two. TaniO, have wondered how your eyes have been, but have been
so remiss in asking. I forget so much. Forgive me for forgetting. So
many I think of, but fail to put pen to paper (so to speak)
Here is another voracious reader who has had the skids applied with ptosis.
I do have perfect vision with implanted lens. However, until we find a
treatment that helps, the myasthenia causing the ptosis, will cover the
entryway to the pupils, preventing me from seeing. I've said I could handle
the legs and arms part, but this loss of vision has been the most
unsettling. My heart truly goes out to anyone with impaired vision. I am
trying to relearn to do my computer graphics and photo restoration with this
*new* vision. So far, so good, except that I have not got into that which
requires an astute eye. We'll see.
One of my internists that I have at the hospital working with my neuro, is a
big believer in the power of words. He is Pakistani, and he shared with me
how he taught himself to read English. Amazing what people will go through.
Would you believe, one of the things he used was a Reader's Digest. We had
many a late night talk during my first hospitalization. hehe He even puts
up with my being hard of hearing and having to repeat himself for me.

For those of us who became addicted it did start out with enjoying
things like the taste and how it made us fee. By the end drinking
ethanol probably would have filled physical addiction and the feelings
of euphoria were long gone and could not be reached again regardless
of how hard we tried. Near the end for many of us we didn't want to
drink at all - we just didn't know how to not drink. I hope and pray
you never have to experience the feelings of hopelessness, loneliness
and despair that many of us have been through. OTOH, if I had not
experienced those things I never would have been led to a way of
living that is filled with joy and peace of mind. I am truly blessed.
Many of my brethren have died without finding a way out of the abyss.

I drank 3 to 4 screwdrivers, occasionally more, and a beer with late dinner
every night for 25 years, or so. Being an entertainer and practically living
in night clubs, it seemed normal. I never even felt the effects of the
booze. Last year I went to the doctor because my feet burned and hurt badly
all the time. He diagnosed Alcoholic Neuropathy, the damage being permanent.
On top of that .... Diabetes, my lucky day.
Now I drink only on Monday and in moderation. Actually, I'm not even
supposed to do that. My point is, I was an alcoholic and didn't realize it.
I was terrified at the prospect of not having my screwdrivers every night
but the day I stopped .... weird, I didn't miss it at all. I think I really
would though if I didn't have my Mondays to look forward to.

Young people, that is, people who have yet to acquire anything of substance,
are fond of clichés regarding the ownership of people by possessions. I've
always laughed at them but I'm getting weary of stumbling over my own....
mostly book, books and more books. It seems those I really valued have
managed to disappear anyway. Of course, I wouldn't throw them away but they
do tend to weigh me down so I may give them to the community clubhouse
library as a first step in gaining some "room to roam" in my life.

Hmmm. Know how you feel - we enjoy filking at science fiction
conventions. I once wrote a filk whose chorus was "I can't resist a
trilogy, you see..."
