| | | Lyrica and La La Land I'm getting a little worried about the lyrica. I've spent the better part of
each day half ripped for the last year. It's not quite like being stoned but
very close to it. Doesn't effect me mentally... can still think and reason
efficiently (....Ok, don't start with me) but feel "stumbly" and spaced out.
It works great on the neuropathy and I'd have a hell of a time without it,
but I can't see being blown away daily as a good thing. I've tried dividing
the pills into 3 doses but the first 100mg dose does nothing and the second
100mg dose brings on the "high" even taken 6 hours later. The third 100mg
dose, well, I don't know... I'm stoned by then...lol.
I complained to the doc about it and he said it would go away in a few
weeks.... that was last year....lol. Others have told me it didn't effect
them this way. Good for them. The weird thing is, some days it doesn't
affect me at all except for getting rid of the pain.
Has anyone taken any other meds for neuropathy. I have it in my feet. When I
get up in the morning (my morning - 1:00 pm) it's fine for a few hours...
then it hurts to walk or stand. The lyrica stops it.... feet still feel
swollen but they're not (never are, just feel like it) and there is no pain.
Anyway, I'm looking for another med. I'm really afraid I'll get hooked on
the lyrica (mostly the "high"). Any thoughts?

God, John... sounds like what I had a couple of years, or so, ago...
really huge pain! I am so very sorry. I do know that pain very well.
That pain is what caused me to be diagnosed. I could not even walk.
I have never taken what you are talking about, Lycra and such. My doc
is a little on the conservative side, so we focused on getting my BG
to be normal, losing weight, etc... Supplements, like alpha lipoic
acid, etc... Avandia (until they shut down production for awhile, and
it nearly caused me to go blind, otherwise)... then the relatively
sublime and harmless Metformin.
Now, I am having a problem explaining some of the expenses of
diabetes meds and vitamins to my accountant... I have to worry about
what the accountants will think with every expenditure, unless I do it
with cash, out of pocket. Can't even buy a bottle of booze, or toilet
tissues, without it being tallied up somewhere....
I wish there were something I could say or do that would be helpful.
At any rate, you have my sincerest sympathy.

| | | Re: Lyrica and La La Land My doctor recently gave me a sample of Lyrica. I haven't taken it
yet. Because it's pretty new I'm nervous to take it. I'll wait until
it's got some history behind it before I take it. If I'd have gotten
it from the doctor before I started doing what I will tell you about
next, I probably would have taken it.
I have found something that has really helped me. It is crazy, but I
rub toothpaste for sensitive teeth on my feet. I do it twice a day.
I leave it on for about 5 minutes. Then I rinse it off, and ice my
feet for another 5 minutes. I was doing the icing before adding the
toothpaste, and it wasn't good enough by itself, but I have found that
if I don't do it, my feet do hurt worse. I have other foot problems
that cause pain too besides the neuropathy. The active ingredient in
the toothpaste for sensitive teeth is potassium nitrate. It is
believed that it interferes with pain signals. It is my experience
that it reduces pain signals. It does not numb the area. You can
still feel everything, but just not so much pain or oversensitivity.
But, if the pain gets too loud, then you will still feel it. I use it
for an oversensitive tooth that I have. But, when another tooth got
infected, I still felt that pain because it was very loud. It took
about a month of applying it to my feet before I was sure it was
working. I imagine that it probably does not do as perfect a job as
the Lyrica does, but before I started doing it there were times that I
chose to crawl instead of walk because the pain was too bad, and it is
never that bad anymore.

BTW... If you ever need a reference to really good accountants, I can
help you out... here, in Florida, New York, and several other places
and jurisdictions.... My personal accountant, also a very close
friend, is a very wonderful Orthodox Jewish man whom I have known for
a number of years... I would not trust anyone else to do my own work.

Getting my bg down worked for me. I do remember the months when the
pain was so bad I'd just cry for ages - I can fully understand why it
makes some people go over the edge!
I hope Susan replies soon - she has a formula that seems to help a lot
of people.

2000 mg Evening Primrose Oil (EPO) and in some cases Alipoic Acid
(ALA) along with lowering BGs can help a great deal. EPO and ALA can
be bought at any pharmacy, Walmart, super k-mart, BJs, Price Club etc
very cheaply, no need to buy them online or at any health supplement
scamming store and waste money. I also add to that Topamax
prescribed by my neurologist (no side effects in over a year of taking
it.) It's very rare that I experience pain now. Some of the anti
depressants prescribed to treat neuropathy have some nasty side
effects. Be sure to read the included data sheets or go to the
manufacture's web sites to read them, they list the side effects.

I've been on the ALA and EPO, vitamins, etc, for a year. No help. I read
everything, everywhere I can find it about all posibilities. No matter what
I try, there has been no change and 2 docs say there isn't going to be a
change. By limiting alcohol intake and keeping bg levels under control
(which I do) it won't get worse. Lyrica is the only relief I've had. I can
live with it and function fine but not without the Lyrica. I just keep
looking for other possibilities.
