What's the maximum dosage per day of Metformin
which doctors prescribe?

Does it differ between Metformin Regular & Metformin
XR?

Depends on the formulation.

Yes.

2000 mg is max for the extended release (XR aka ER)

2550 mg is max for the regular

These maximum numbers are for healthy kidneys and close monitoring of
serum creatinine.

May GOD continue to heal our hearts with HIS living water so that we
can love others a little bit more, dear neighbor whom I love
unconditionally.

This is the generally accepted rule:
Metformin HCI

The usual starting dose is one 500-milligram tablet twice a day,
taken with morning and evening meals. Your doctor may increase
your daily dose by 500 milligrams at weekly intervals, based on
your response up to a total of 2,000 milligrams.

An alternative starting dose is one 850-milligram tablet a day,
taken with the morning meal. Your doctor may increase this by
850 milligrams at 14-day intervals, to a maximum of 2,550
milligrams a day.

The usual maintenance dose ranges from 1,500 to 2,550 milligrams
daily. If you take more than 2,000 milligrams a day, your doctor
may recommend that metformin be divided into three doses, taken
with each meal.

Metformin XR

The usual starting dose is one 500-milligram tablet once daily
with the evening meal. Your doctor may increase your dose by 500
milligrams at weekly intervals, up to a maximum dosage of 2,000
milligrams a day. If a single 2,000-milligram dose fails to
control your blood sugar, you may be asked to take
1,000-milligram doses twice a day. If you need more than 2,000
milligrams a day, the doctor will switch you to regular
metformin.

Actually it does. 2500 mg is excessive for the XR (aka ER)

can love others a little more, dear Julie whom I love unconditionally.

It's actually just a tad higher, at 3 x 850 mg: 2550 in the U.S.
Australia, I believe, has a max of 3000.

The maximum daily dose of XR is 2000, by the manufacturer's recommendation.

So why would the max daily dose differ between XR & Regular?

I wonder if there has been a change in their thinking on the maximum dose. I
know that when I was first put on it my doctor and the Diabetes Teaching
Centre said that 2500mg. was the max.

Cloudbrains: 3 grams/day?? Well this drug is more for obesity/lipid
control more than anything else at that dose.!! The drug company
responsible ( which one??) really need to start addressing the
pharmacologic aspects of this drug. IMHO it is primarily to deal with
obesity/T2 ! Very few reports suggest the contary.

I don't believe tha tMetformin is used primarily as a product fo rdealing
with obesity. It may result in an average weight loss of about 8 lbs!
Not a great deal if one is obese. It deals with the release of glucagon
from the liver, giving you less glucose running around in the bloodstream,
as well as helping with insulin resistance, not pirimarily fo rweight loss
at all. It doesn't tend to cause you to gain weight as inculin or actos
and avandia can.

Metformin is used in people likely to have a level of insulin resistance!
Its one of the primary drugs used in t2's IK as its proven to work extremely
well!
I only take 1000mg a day as dont tolerate more even on the slow release!

Actually, it's not a weight loss or lipid lowering drug at all.

It improves insulin sensitivity and, to some degree, inhibits glucose
release from the liver.
