Default Medicare adds on to do-not-pay list

Hi all.....
I have not posted here in ages, but faithfully visit this site every
day. Thought this news item might be of interest to some of the older
diabetics , who sometimes had full blown diabetes for years before being
diagnosed and treated--consequently developing neuropathy, vision
problems before getting attention for blood glucose control.
Washington--The Federal Goverment will add two preventable conditions to
Medicare's do-not-pay list for hospitals, a much smaller number than it
had been comtemplating. Last year, the centers for Medicare andMedicaid
Services set new ground by determining it no
longer pay for extra costs for treating certain preventable conditions,
referred to as "never events". An example of a never event is a
transfusion with the wrong blood type. Medicare officials announced
Thursday that it no longer will pay the extra-care costs associated with
treating dangerous blood clots in the leg following knee or
hip-replacement. The program also will not pay extra for complications
stemming from POOR
CONTROL OF BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS.

What a reward for living to a ripe old age! I will be 83 in a couple
of months--rest assured the guidelines for control were a heck of a lot
different 40 years ago. What assinine mentality would hold diabetics
accountable for the lack of medical knowledge available many year ago?
Or am I overreacting?????
Maxi

Do you think this means that diabetics that have a record of poor control
and needs an amputation, etc. to save their life, Medicare won't pay?

If poor BG control is grounds for letting people die, then what about aids
patients? Aids is 99% preventable

I don't think your overreacting. Diabetics have been getting the short end
of the stick for a long time.

There's *still* a huge lack of medical knowledge when it comes to
diabetes.

Do you have a source, or even date, for this announcement?
I can't find it.
These brief press items often leave out important details.

This sounds like a version of the policy where Medicare will no longer
reimburse for treatment resulting from hospital errors (i.e., the extra
surgery if they leave a sponge inside you). If a *hospital's* failure to
keep post-surgical bg at acceptable levels lengthens recovery time,
maybe they shouldn't be reimbursed for the extra costs so incurred. But
that's totally different from saying they won't pay for treatment of
complications that may or may not be the result of a patient following
medical advice for 30 years.

Medicare is being raped and it will get worse until it fails.

You will be on your own. Like we were when good people
started MHD

Not only diabetes, but what causes diabetes, heart desease, high blood
pressure, etc. Medicene is still an "art form" where there is alot
of guessing with "links" studies.
