Default Meter reading question

Hi All,

I had a big meal for dinner tonight... I waited an hour to test and the
reading was 129. Then, I tested again an hour and half later and my
reading was 113.

My question is this: What is the proper amount of time that it should
take for my BG to go down? Is this a good amount of time that it took
to go down?

I am not on any medication.

Thanks,

Craig

First off, that is borderline for permissible error. The FDA requirements
are +-20% and most manufacturers seem happy with +-15% - just check the
range of numbers on their test solutions. It is very possible that if you
had done another stick 20 seconds after the first one you could have seem
113 then - you're placing way to much emphasis on the readings. If you
want to be sure, try three or four sticks each time - you'll see what I
mean.

Two hours is generally regarded as the time it takes for readings to
return more or less to normal. I've seen data that mentioned a peak at
about 45 minutes.

Unfortunately, that question has some similarities to "How long is a
piece of string?" The problem is the composition of the meal. A simple
meal of mostly simple carb should peak at 1 hour and be mostly "gone"
between 2 and 3 hours after eating, e.g.

http://tinyurl.com/gxnme

However, add fat and fiber and the peaks are delayed. One personal
example: my sugars peak 4-5 hours after eating potato chips or pizza, or
my sister's holiday meals.

Thanksgiving is going to be an adventure for me. I will be testing every
hour (and injecting insulin as needed) from dinner time till long after I
return home. That includes at least one stop on the Interstate to test.
Not something to do often (oink!) but holidays are holidays.

Old Al

What was in your "big meal" exactly, and in the drinks and
sides?

Your numbers look pretty good in the circumstances.

The others have answered about "proper amounts"; my thoughts
are here:

Craig,

I don't know if there is any absolute answer to your question. However,
those numbers are similar to mine after my evening meal, which tends to be
my largest. I would also add the caveat that all meals I eat are composed
of foods that I have tested and do not spike me over the 140 range at one
hour. My meals are long on veggies, fish, chicken, and modest amounts of
monosaturated oils.

Imho, it looks like you are on the right track. I would be satisfied with
those numbers.

Thanks to all who responded. My meal that night was two small pieces of
bread, Chicken, potato with a small amount of sour cream ( which is
somewhat of a treat) and veggies. Also had a very large dinner salad.

Thanks again,

Craig

Sorry to seem to nitpick, but what kind of bread and how big a potato?
these things can be important. I usually find that I can esily handle,
either a potato or 2 pieces of low carb bread or a piece of fruit (which
you didn't have), but not all of them. tht is why we keep testing so we
know wht we can and can't handle.

Looks like you ae doing very well.

No problem on the nitpicking. I should explain a little bit better.
This meal is not my normal meal. It was more of a treat for me. For the
last three months I have been only eating good meals. Low in carbs. So,
the potato with sour cream was a treat. The bread was white sour dough.
I have only been eating whole wheat. So that was a treat as well. The
size of the potato was medium. The meal overall was not bad for me,
just a little out of the ordinary.

Wow, Craig, the bread itself would cause my numbers to hit 180 at 1 hour.
It appears you have indeed caught your condition early since that somewhat
carby meal (by my standards) is still keeping your numbers under 140 at 1
hr. Good for you! It appears you'll have more latitude in your diet than
most of us do. Just don't let that allow you too get lax. Keep on top of
those numbers.

Thanks for the clarification Craig.

Nowadays I have similar post-prandials after a diner like
that; as time has passed I am able to eat significantly more
carbs at my evening meal than any other. Breakfast and
lunch, unfortunately, are still very tight for carbs.
