Metformin - Dosage

The doctor had prescribed Metformin - 500
thrice daily for my father ie after every meal . The earlier
dosage was twice daily

I am looking for some one with a similar dosage
as I am unable to understand his BP goes up when
the BG level goes down .

i've never noticed my BP going up when my BG goes
down

if your father's BP is high, that requires
treatment, especially in a diabetic, because of
the risk of damage to our kidneys

I was on metformin 3x500 for about a year - never had that problem - I
suspect it's an individual thing rather than a universal side effect. I'm
currently on 4x500 - BTW that's metformin ER.

Does it mean you take a tablet every 6 hrs .

Ned, it is my opinion that the blood pressure is unrelated to the bgs.
My bp is 98/60. I take 1500 mgs of metforming once a day, after
dinner, It is the XR type

I take 1000mgs twice a dy and have never noticed any effect on my bp. I
also have not noticed anyy correlation between bp an bg, wither positive
or negative with metformin use.

metformin is not fast acting so there would n't be a quick connecction
should there be one. I have absolutely no idea why your father's bp ract
like this.

Forgive me for piggybacking Wendy as I didn't catch the original question.

I have been on Glucophage since diagnosis and on the same dose as you are
now and like you I have never had a problem with it causing anything wrong
with my bp. I take 1000 mg twice daily also and I do take mine before meals
to get things going before I eat.

It could indeed be a variant of "white coat syndrome". I know sticking needles
in myself always makes me nervous... Or maybe his BP always goes up after a
meal. Could be a host of things, but probably not the Metformin.

Most older diabetics ought to be on at least an Ace Inhibitor which would help
lower the BP and protect the Kidneys.

I take one first thing when I arise - usually between 7 and 8 am. I take
one about 3 pm, one before I go to bed - usually around 11 pm, and I
reserve one for about 3 am, when I usually awaken. That 3 am jobber seems
to reduce 'dawn phenomenon' which I've noticed recently.

Usually moderate weight loss, attributable to the gastro upset it often
causes. I do have more gas with it than before.

Ned, I dont understand why if you are on the ER dosage, you dont take
them all at one time. I take 1500 mgs er directly after dinner

I am also taking 2000mgs metformin ER. I take 2X500 after breakfast & the
other 2X500 after my evening meal. After the 'adjustment ' period,
everything is fine including me B/P. I am also taking an ace inhibitor & a
bata blocker.

Isn't it nice that there is at least one benefit to that wee-hours wake-up!?
That's when I take my thyroid meds, since it has to be on an empty stomach &
I have to wait an hour before I can eat -- & taking it in the middle of the
night eliminates that. And on the day I take Fosamax it allows me to have
breakfast before it's time for lunch (Fosamax has to be taken -- by
itself -- first thing in the morning, wait 30 mins before any other meds or
food or lying down -- *very* convenient if you have other meds you need to
take 'n wait! NOT)

I didn't mention it because it isn't true.
You don't have to drink water the whole 1/2 hour. You just have to take the
pill with 6-8oz of water, then not eat or drink anything for 30 mins, though
I think more water is allowed if you want.
Who said you have to keep drinking??

I just take the Fosamax & "do stuff" -- whether it's chores, email, or go
for a walk. I do sometimes have to adjust the day +/- if I don't have the
time needed.

Never mind. Different people drink liquids at different rates. I was making
a joke, aka exaggeration, although to drink 8 oz. of water often does take
me the half hour, and, yes, I multitask, I'm not just sitting letting the
pill & timer do their thing while drinking water. It's simply a part of the
PITA of weekly Fosamax to me. If it's not to you, that's not a problem.
