Default MIA? Billie - short update

I know you won't believe a *short* update from me until you see it, but
...............

Yep, MIA, and but I hope a report very soon. New doctor Tuesday, an
infectious disease specialist. Know this doesn't say much, but he is
supposed to be one sharp dude, so hopefully in one area at least let's hope
he brings some relief.

MUCH has gone on, and I hope I will be able to tell about it; much diabetes
related as I noted when I gave my history to them the other day. Some a
mite personal, and I'll try to find a way to tone it to share it discretely.

Losing my ability to type, that is the signal to stop. *s* I've thought
of you daily, but have not been able to read. I'm sure you've all been
behaving yourselves. *vbg*

Cyber hugs to you all,
Billie.......with her feet higher than her heart!! *s*

Yep, looks like I'm out there hanging out my shingles. That supped up
infectious disease specialist seems to be on the right tract. For real
healing in days when all the others haven't been able to quell the nasty
little buggers all these months. My urologist was the one who recognized
something *different* and sent me to the specialist, and I believe he is on
the right track of this and several other things, but this horrid ole thing
that's been giving me more pain than I think I've ever had appears to be
SHINGLES!!! Oh, ladies, and gents, I am here to tell you, if you've ever
had chicken pox, stay away from anyone who has shingles! Wear a sign around
your neck....."Do you have shingles? You could give them to me, and I do
not want to catch them from you!" I think that's the way it goes anyway.
If not, you can straighten us all out. I've already got them, and am
immunized. The medicine has really been helping, though it is not
completely cured yet.

Still, that is not the core to all that's been going on. More to come
later.

Cyber hugs to you all,
Billie.......with her feet STILL higher than her heart with GREAT results!!

I'm under the impression that shingles and chickenpox are basically the
same bug. Childredn tend to get chickenpox and adults are likely to
get shingles. At least that is the way it was explained to me when we
had a friend in quarantine at the hospital with it. Most people don't
get them after they have had chickpox but that's not foolproof.

I have known a number of people who got shingles during times of extreme
stress like shortly after the death of a spouse. From what I understood,
it comes from the chicken pox virus that lies dormant at the base of
nerves and gets activated, resulting in the terrible pain. It can be
dreadful!!

Billie, I am so sorry to hear you hae this afflicin along with all the
others. I gues it affected your eyes, as you wee unable to read, lik emy
aunt Adele had many years ago. I wish you a speedy recovery. The newer
meds are supposd to be much better at dealing with this nasty scourge.

Billie,

I'm so sorry you have shingles. They can really be miserable!

Oh, and I heard the same explanation about how a person gets shingles as
Wendy did. In other words, you've carried them since you had the chickenpox
and they returned with a nasty surprise.

I hope you feel better soon!

Hi, Billie --

I'm so sorry to hear that you're having such terrible problems. But
thanks for "checking in" and letting us know how you are doing.
There's a lot of worrying when you don't. :-)

As others said, shingles is the return of the chicken pox virus that
you thought you had beaten off when you were a kid. Lying dormant for
years and then suddenly striking at a time when for whatever reason
your immunity is down.

Shingles is not contagious in the normal sense of the word. You cannot
give someone else shingles. But if they have contact with the weepy
liquid that comes from the sores in the first few days, they may get
chicken pox from your shingles--if they have never had chicken pox
before. And then presumably they could get shingles 20 or 40 years
later after getting the chicken pox from you. But once the shingle
sores dry up, the moment when you can give someone elxe chicken pox has
passed. And someone who has had chicken pox wiould not be affected even
by contact with your sores.

It is rather amazing just how painful shingles can be, and it is
amazing how long the effects can linger. Some people get it more than
once, and some people are plagued by a lingering post-herpetic
neuralgia athat is left over when the shingles is cured. I've managed
to do both in the last 3 years. I got shingles, then I got it again
maybe 2 more times, and I am still scratching, nearly 3 years later.
The only good part of it was that the pain never again approached the
intensity of the first few weeks--subsequent recurrences were much
milder, and the post herpetic neuralgia is more annoying and irritating
than actually painful. But YMMV with shingles--for most people who get
it, it comes once and then it goes away, never to return.

There is a new shingles vaccine on the market now. If I had known what
I now knowand it had been on the market before, I would have asked for
it. There are risks with all new medicines of course, but shingles is a
brute.

That's the theory but in practice the shingles can return many years
after you got over the chickenpox.

My sympathies, never suffered but I know plenty who have and theyre
definitely no fun.
