Migraines

    Default Migraines

Does anyone else here get them? If so... What do you eat when you have
them? I have a really bad one right now. Started last night. I was able
to eat some plain white rice last night but today has been bad. I just do
not want to eat. Blood sugar has been okay but leaning towards low. I
don't have any juice or regular soda in the house. And the only candy I
have that I can eat is Twizzlers and red hots, neither of which sounds good.

From what I have read, not everyone who gets them gets the nausea but I
really have it bad. Sometimes if I can throw up, I will get better. So far
all I've eaten today was the gelled chia seeds, one piece of toast with
Smart Balance light, topped with flax seeds and hemp hearts. I took a bite
of the 2nd piece but couldn't eat any more.

Had to force myself to eat dinner. Nothing sounded good at all. I made
whole wheat spaghetti for Angela. There was no meat in it. Just the red
sauce made from scratch. I had a little of that with a tiny bit of Daiya
non-dairy cheese and maybe three green beans. It was all I could do to
    finish that.

I need to eat my bedtime snack soon. Am going to try more rice. That
doesn't sound appealing at all but I was able to keep it down.

I get them. I generally can't eat a thing when I have them. I sip iced
water if I am not vomiting with them. Throwing up doesn't make me feel
better but the movement of the head while throwing up makes the headache
1,000 times worse. At their worst I can't move off the bed nor move my
head 1mm. In the post migraine stage I like toast and Vegemite and a cup
    of tea.

Thanks! I haven't moved too far from the bed. Angela only had one dance
class today. Tomorrow she has dance all night so I will just drop her off
and can go back to bed if I need to. I am starting to wonder if I don't
have something else. Either something different or something on top of the
migraine. I am freezing and have the chills. I bought some little hot pads
that I wanted to use on my head and the back of my neck but it turns out
they wouldn't work for that. You have to put them in your clothing. I put
one in my shirt. It's not what I would call hot. Just barely warm but
feels soothing. I also have on a really thick sweater and I am sooo cold!
I don't usually get the chills with a migraine.

Most of my migraines go away within a couple of hours after I take my
migraine meds, so the question doesn't often pertain. When I have one
of my persistent ones, I don't feel much like eating, but I may eat some
bland food like rice (if I have any in house) or saltines.

For short-term treatment of an acute condition (like migraine, IBS, a
digestive virus, or the like) I eat what's appropriate for the acute
condition and return to eating for the chronic condition when the acute
    one has passed.

    It's a marathon, not a sprint.

I have found that I frequently start a cold or bug with a migraine. As
the migraine fades, the symptoms of the cold or bug kick in.

When I get the chills, that usually means I'm running a temperature.
    Have you taken yours?

Exactly. My migraines aren't frequent enough for me to have maintenance
meds on hand, but, if I catch them early enough, caffeine, carbs, and
liquid help. If not, rest in a darkened room with white noise (all news
    radio generally works) is next.

Imitrex knocks most of mine out, but sometimes I get a series of
migraines that I wake up with for 3-4 days in a row. (My
post-menopausal body still faintly cycling.) I don't want to take
Imitrex more than 2 or maybe 3 days in a row, for fear of rebound
headaches, so when I get to that point, I take aspirin and caffeine
instead, and that often ends the series. If it doesn't, I can take
Imitrex again the next day. The last time I had to do this, I found I
didn't have any regular-strength aspirin in house, so I subbed in 8
    children's aspirin. (Children's aspirin = 81mg x 4 = 324. Regular
aspirin = 325mg). It felt funny swallowing all those little (flavored!)
    pills.

It seems that in some cases Gatorade or similar products can help fend
off a just starting headache. I have to wonder if that somehow prevents
the progress of some sort of cascade.

Thanks! I haven't tried any migraine meds and am kind of afraid to based on
the side effects. I still have it. No appetite at all. Thankfully I don't
get them often but when I do they usually last for 3 days. I'm going to try
a little cereal this morning. It doesn't sound appealing but then no food
    does.

Because I have GERD, the only pain med I am allowed to take is Tylenol and I
never bother with that because it does nothing.

No because as I have said countless times before, I can not find a
thermometer that gives an accurate temp. If I think I (or Angela) has a
fever based on what the thermometer reads, the person at the Drs. office
always says we do not or vice versa.

If they usually last for 3 days, why haven't you tried any migraine
meds. What side effects are you afraid of?

    Stomach upset, sleepiness.

I have not seen any that looked appealing. They all seem to have bad side
effects. And I can't stand to take anything that makes me feel drugged. I
was listening to some women talk about the meds at the dance studio and it
sounded like they all pretty much left you unfunctional.

Oh, yes. After migraines don't often include nausea, and sleepiness
would be a terrible thing to trade for a three day migraine.

Well from what I have read, a side effect can be sleepiness. Another side
effect can be memory loss. I don't need stuff like that. And I am very
prone to getting side effects from meds. If they work for you then great!
But for me? Three days of being sick to my stomach is preferable than three
days of having to stay in bed all day. Yes, I do stay in bed more with a
migraine but I can still get up and do things if I have to.

I already have nausea. I don't need more of the same. And I sure don't
have any trouble sleeping, especially when I have a migraine. But I gather
some people do. Maybe your migraines are worse than mine. I don't know. I
just don't see any need to take a medication for them.

I can not tell you how many different thermometers I have bought over the
years. Not a one was accurate. Not even the German one that said it was
    guaranteed to be accurate.

That could be too but... I have had 5 different thermometers in the house
and they all gave me different readings. So I just gave up and go by how we
are feeling. Neither of us are prone to high fevers. Mostly we run low
temps. Speaking of which... One of my thermometers once registered my temp
    at 95.0. Not likely.

Husband too having troubles with thermometers, the only one really
reliable (for him): an old mercury filled one we still have (Celsius).
    Not available anymore.
Myself using a relatively new one that takes up only one minute of my
    time, okay with me.

How can you know that all those different thermometers were inaccurate?
Against what are you comparing them to know they're inaccurate?

I didn't used to have trouble with those except that the last one I had was
    dropped and broken.

Well one of them may have been accurate but how would I know? With wildly
varying temps from low to slight fever? All I know is that I have taken my
temperature with my own thermometer in my vehicle just prior to going to the
Dr. and within minutes, they will take it again and it will be off by
    several degrees.
