apparently 3 state legislators for such a law. There is no indication
that the law has been referred to a committee, or has been voted on
yet ,either by a committee or by either house of the full legislature.
Don't know about Oz, but in our country, all kinds of bizarre
proposals get introduced into the legislatures at all levels.
Generally only the costliest ones, such as spending as much money as
the rest of the world combined on "defense," get passed.
Rest assured, this one will die a quiet death...

Thanks Morris
Good to hear that. I can see it as the thin end of the wedge
for all sorts of discrimination.
We may have bizarre laws proposed here, but not quite as
weird at State or Federal level as that one.

True dat. I don't know what is stranger...the proposed law, or the
title of this thread. In any case it will go nowhere. Although, as
bizarre as this proposal is I can see the thinking behind it. Obesity
is become an epidemic. What do we do about it? All the talk here in
the newsgroup is so specific to diet and the minutia we argue about.
The truth is that people in general don't listen to the basic medical
advice that has been around for years - eat healthier foods and
exercise more. Some here blame doctors for everything, but that's not
the problem. The fault, Horatio, is not in the stars but in
ourselves. Most obesity is not a gland problem, or a heriditary
problem, or any other kind of medical problem...it is a lack of
discipline and a choice to raise a big middle finger up to the
establishment that recommends better eating habits. You can't
legistlate willpower, but something has to be done.

No, the thin end is already come around. Numerous USA jurisdictions
have passed legislation prohibiting restaurant owners from making
their own decisions on whether to allow smoking on their property.
I have never smoked, but I resent not only the government's
interference, but also the implication that I'm too stupid
to decide where I will eat.
Here in Fort Wayne, we decreed that smoking sections of restaurants
must be completely enclosed. Then, after proprietors who chose to
stay in business spent lots of money remodeling, we decreed
no smoking at all.
So, I hope Mississippi legislators won't be that stupid, but
I'm not optimistic.
Off-topic: Mississippi ratified the fourteenth amendment
(which officially ended slavery in USA) in 1976.

Yesterday marked the first day of smoking ban in restaurants and some
other public places in Maryland.

In that case it seems like fifty years ago people had more a lot more
willpower. What happened? Can't we change things so that people have
the willpower again that they used to have?

Not all *that* quiet.
It's been the subject of constant wisecracks and jokes every morning
in the coffee shop I frequent. Mostly by my overweight coffee drinking
buddies. Frankly, I'd hoped word wouldn't have leaked out of Jackson
or at most out of MS. It's a little embarassing to find they've heard
about it all the way down in Australia! lol!

Yeah, the last thing Mississippians want to make the news for ... is the

We may live to see the "nanny state" in full force, all predicated on
the belief that government has the right to regulate what it funds. If
it funds health care, then it may regulate food consumption based on
everything we know about the food/health connection.
So far, I've liked the mandated changes like food labeling, restaurant
health scores and tamper-proof packaging, but there will be things
coming down that we don't like, especially when the full costs of
diabesity begin weighing down the economy.
You're seeing it in the beginning stages where school boards are getting
rid of junk food and soft drink machines on public school campuses, but
it won't likely stop there. We just haven't felt the full pain. As
technology advances and gets more expensive, people will demand those
treatments and costs will increase leading to more nanny state control.
It's inevitable. Even Gov. Huckabee talked about lowering health costs
by improving fitness rather than treating it expensively with medicine.
He's right, but that line of thinking could easily lead to strong
measures against the reluctant. |

I can see it now. As you step up to the Maccas service point
the floor sensor weighs you and the height sensor checks
your height. As you touch the counter your fingerprints are
read. As the youngster keys in your order an alert flashes
"sorry, you can't have fries with that" or "triple
cheeseburger exceeds burger calorie limit for this customer"
or "links to city HbA1c records show customer on carb
restriction - order reduced to salad".
Drive-throughs will become illegal and go the way of the
drive-in movie.
At the other end of the scale, if the sensors show your BMI
is less than 16 you will be force-fed Big Macs.
