Default My Annual Review

Well am back from my first annual review and bloodtests - my GP is
gobsmacked at total weightloss since diagnosis and so am I !!
Have now lost a total of: 24 kg or 52.9lbs or 3.77 stone !!

Gotta phone for results of bloods when gp is in again (shes on holiday next
week) !!
Feeling in my feet is within range (gp's words) !!

Sugars are arguing back cause still have infections but she thinks they will
settle soon !!

All I can hope for now is a better a1c then at diagnosis !!
Today is also my 6mth anniversary and the gp thinks I am doing something
right at least !!

Yours Donna

Thats great news Donna keep it up.
i am also glad that you are no longer getting insulted day after day here.
dont forget you can gain that weight back even faster than it took to loose
it.
I might call in and have my last blood results faxed to me later today.
keep up the great work.

Donna congratulations on your weight loss. I always said that having
diabetes made me live a better and healthy lifestyle. I have lost 60
pounds since I came here in 2000. I have never felt better or healthier
..

I am sure with the weight loss your a1c should be lower than before,

happy anniversary of taking charge of your diabetes.

I also spoke to my DSN about changing my lantus as I hate the pens you have
to use with it !!
And the plan is too change to Levemir once Ive used my Lantus up !!
And to split it too 2 injections as I can use the cartridges in a Novopen 3
which I use for Novorapid already !!
I hate needles and the fact the lantus pens hurt are making it worse yet the
Novopen 3 is ok !!
The nurse has no issue changing me to Levemir at all bar the fact I would
have to come off the metformin as it aint licensed with Levemir here !!
But I wont miss metformin mr as my stomach hates it !!

I actually bawled my eyes out earlier as I manged to get into size 14/16 uk
size jeans and I was having to wear 22/24 uls size jeans at diagnosis so Ive
dropped around 4/5 dress sizes !!

I dont actually know "HOW" Ive done it but I have and its a little
overwhelming right now !!

Just fingers crossed for the hba1c results now !!

well not that you'd think much of my suggestion, but for anyone else, ALL
Type 2's SHOULD be on Metformin as it helps stop liver releases and helps
combat Insulin Resistance which is the hallmark of Type 2. Without it, just
taking Insulin alone isn't enough to help and has been known to cause too
much insulin in the blood which can lead to congestive heart failure as a
complication.

even a T2, who's lost all insulin production and is now IDDM would need
metformin, same as a T1, that develops insulin resistance for whatever
reason. not a smart plan imo as well as many doctors.

Apparently all my doctors disagree with you, as none of them has ever even
suggested that I should take it.

When I was first diagnosed and thought to be a T2, I must have read every
study,
journal and book available and every one of them along with my doctor who
was
wrong about my T1, said, every T2 should be on Metformin.

In a book I'm reading now, the doctor states if one is showing to have even
slight
IR they should be put on Metformin to help combat the IR so it doesn't begin
to
cause weight gain from the extra insulin in the body.

Doesn't matter to me... it's not my health at risk and it doesn't help me
one bit
with glucose control because I don't have enough beta cells to work.

There are other drugs that work on insulin resistance too but if they aint
licensed alongside insulin then there is redtape to get them scripted here
in the UK and health risks asscociated with taking something thats
unlicensed !!
There are some type 2's (including my nextdoor neighbour) who has been told
NOT to take metformin !!
In the UK if a type 2 is underweight they do NOT advise them to tale
metformin but they use one of the other drugs available to them !!

I have to come of metformin if I go onto Levemir because as yet it is
licensed for use with Levemir yet here !!
The endo may desisde to risk continuing it but the feeling is NOT to
continue it !!

Everyones body is individual and responds differently so people cant just me
lumped together that EVERYONE should take this that or the other - the human
race doesnt work like that !!
People dont fit into neat little boxes - yes it would be easier if we did
but we dont - and I wish people would stop assuming what is recommended for
one is not neccesarily right for another !!

G'day G'day Cloudedbrains,

I guess that is why we say YMMV (your mileage may vary) a lot around
here on occasions. Perhaps you caught us in a lull. We could
consider is a timely reminder. Thanks,

Stable is good. Stable lets you have more quality of life.

Buy something from an American firm, like Lands End. Their sizes are
one smaller than ours - even better for the ego : )

Damn RK, you must have seen something new - metformin prevents liver
disease. Since when? Metformin gives some cardio protection, but, I
never heard of stopping liver disease.

I think you read it wrong. One of the ways Metformin works
is to stop the liver releasing a lot of glucose into the
blood stream, but like any drug for diabetes it doesn't work
alone, it needs user cooperation in the form of dietary
changes. Expecting Met to cover large amounts of carbs is
stupidity. Insulin alone for type 2's doesn't do anything
for insulin resistance so the cardio system goes on being at
risk. There are other ways to reduce insulin resistance,
weight loss for example. Sometimes doctors don't prescribe
Met if a type 2 is not too far overweight and with not so
high numbers. For an obese diabetic with high bg's, Met is a
great drug. Another angle to IR is to eat in a way that
doesn't cause you to release too much natural insulin. That
is various degrees of carb modification (a YMMV thing).

Liver release, not liver disease.

No where did I say "disease" I said, liver release, which is just a liver
dump.

: I think you read it wrong. One of the ways Metformin works
: is to stop the liver releasing a lot of glucose into the
: blood stream, but like any drug for diabetes it doesn't work
: alone, it needs user cooperation in the form of dietary
: changes. Expecting Met to cover large amounts of carbs is
: stupidity. Insulin alone for type 2's doesn't do anything
: for insulin resistance so the cardio system goes on being at
: risk. There are other ways to reduce insulin resistance,
: weight loss for example. Sometimes doctors don't prescribe
: Met if a type 2 is not too far overweight and with not so
: high numbers. For an obese diabetic with high bg's, Met is a
: great drug. Another angle to IR is to eat in a way that
: doesn't cause you to release too much natural insulin. That
: is various degrees of carb modification (a YMMV thing).

thank you jan.
