| | | My husband I am new to all of this so bear with me. I know I am not suppose to post to
more than 1 thread but I am so lost I don't know where to go, SORRY! He is
not in the best of health and he is type 2 diabetes, cancer, COPD so here is
my dilema he is having bad weight gain, I have been watching his diet and he
has been doing really good. He had thyroid surgery in July now what I would
like to know is, is his weight gain because of not being on his thyroid
hormone being diabetic or a combo of both? Can someone help me understand. |

Weight gain could be fluid retension or some reaction to medicine.
So no one here can really diagnose him and the weight gain might be somthing
his doctor needs to know.

Weight gain can be for a number of reasons. If his thyroid is out of whack,
that can cause it. Some diabetes meds can cause weight gain. Type 2 in
and of itself can cause weight gain.
You say you have been watching his diet, but what does that mean? |

Okay, Penny, then begin where we live here, in ASD, with his diabetes. So,
Type 2 diabetic, right? What diabetic meds does he take? How active is he
able to be? How many lbs. has he gained since his surgery in July? And, what
is his daily diet like?
And, know that people care. We just aren't doctors. Meanwhile, don't worry
about posting into your own thread, it's a perfect way for us to find you.

I had congestive heart failure with a large weight gain due to fluid build
up. When I was released from the hospital I was told to contact my doctor if
I gained three pounds or more in any one 24 hours or gained five pound or
more in five days.
I too take thyroid medicine, but I have never missed more than one or two
doses, so I don't know if his not taking his hormones would cause a weight
gain or not.

Complicated. Let's simplify it a bit. No promises, but at
least a bit more info may help others advise you.
How tall is he?
What did he eat over the past 24 hours for breakfast, lunch,
dinner, snacks? Including drinks and sides?
What blood glucose tests did he do, and at what timing
related to those meals and drinks?
What medications is he taking? Is he using insulin?
Is he able to exercise? If so, does he?
Have you read this: http://www.alt-support-diabetes.org/NewlyDiagnosed.htm

Others have asked good questions related to his diabetes, so I won't
reiterate. What kind of thyroid surgery did he have? And why isn't
he taking thyroid replacement meds if warranted?

Yes, thyroid not being replaced can cause weight gain. You should
discuss with his doctor if he can be on thyroid. I don't know why he's
not, presumably some confounding facors with the cancer and/or COPD?
And yes, diabetes can also cause weight gain. Luckily, pretty much the
same stuff that limits putting on fat also helps control blood glucose.
Diet should be controlled as per this: http://www.alt-support-diabetes.org/NewlyDiagnosed.htm
I'm very sorry for your difficulties. Watching my husband go through my
bypass, I think it was a lot harder on him than on me, but I got all the
support and sympathy. No one sent flowers to *him*, ya know?
