| | | my labs as promised Well not good at all. Just not good.
Fasting BG 196
A1c 10 down only .3 was 10.3
Cholesterol 201 up was great last time
TSH 1.6 normal
T4 10 normal
I told the doctor about Reisa helping me and he took to her plan with the Novolog 70/30 3 times day before meals. He did raise it from 50 to 55
units though.
He is leaving the Novolog R as a sliding scale. He is
leaving the Lantus 100 units at night the same.
"Welp" there ya have it. Thanks to Reisa for the one on one and the rest who
have helped me with inspiration and support.
They said they will mail me my results so if anything was left out that is
pertinent to the diabetes I will do a follow up post.
Again Thanks from the heart |

But, it takes awhile for working a system to show up in bloodwork!! You've
got a good plan now & are working it. Don't get discouraged already just
because you haven't been at it long enough & time to get your labs done came
up.

Thanks Donna :-) I am a little discouraged but not enough to stop trying.
Thanks for your kind words and support. I hope the next three months show a
huge difference. I will sure work at it very hard.
You are right. It has only been a couple weeks and that is not enough time.
I should be happy it came down any at all. I am happy but will be happier
when I fully succeed :-)
Again Thanks a million.

A drop in a1c of 0.3 in just two weeks of changes may very well mean that
your aic under your new system is really about 1.8 lower. That is, you might
expect an aic in 3 months to be around 8.5. But it could well be much lower,
since some changes (such as diet and exercise) have increasing effects with
time.

Diana - excuse me? "Not good at all"?! That A1c is excellent
considering that massive infection - and ANY movement in the right
direction is brilliant under those circumstances. You need to just
keep on keeping on, and I'm sure the next A1c will be excellent.
That cholesterol isn't anything to fret about either, without knowing
the breakdown. It's perfectly possible that the raise is the HDL
cholesterol, the good stuff.
Wish my thyroid panel looked that good!
You're doing fine - just keep up the good work!

Hi Jim,
Thanks for the inspiring post. 8.5 sounds good to me :-) Still want lower
but I know it takes time. I am afraid I have to rely on diet only. The
doctor told me my health is too bad to do any kind of exercise that would
even remotely help bring my numbers down but I do try to walk when I can. I
loved walking and miss it alot. I use to walk 7 miles a day 7 days week and
missing one day then was like missing something great. I will not give up
though. I am in this to win this time. I have been diagnosed since 1999 and
time to stop playing with my life. Thanks again. |

Thanks !!! That is good to know and I will continue to try and count on the
next
one being lower.

I am not sure what normal is. I think it is below 200 so for a very obese
person such as myself that really isn't too bad. I had hoped it would not go
up though. When I get the results in the mail I will check the HDL and see
how it is. I hope it is good. It wasn't quite good enough last time but
getting there.

That should come down when the rest fo the day becomes more controlled. I
can't remember if you are still on Metformin? You really need that to fight
the insulin resistance regardless of whether you are using insulin.
Otherwise you are fighting a tough battle.

Not surprising as you were out of control and are still overweight. But you

Why the 70/30 mix?

With a bit of help you can change to a better routine there. Sliding scale
is not a great treatment.

| | | Re: my labs as promised Hi Jan,
Yes I am still on the Metformin. 1000 mg twice a day. I asked for the 70/30
because it lasts alot longer and I needed something that did not peak early.
I was on it once before and did much better.
The sliding scale is because there are so many foods I have to do without
and portion control doesn't even help as I still spike.
I have tried two tablespoons of mashed potatoes before and spiked and that
is not alot of potato not even the size of a very small one. We use 2% milk
no butter.
Bread is taboo also even wheat. I want to lose the weight and hopefully get
off all the insulin.
I can't take much more of the physical pain this dog gone disease is causing
me. I thought I was in pain before but my legs and feet feel like I am
standing in a furnace and they burn and hurt constantly.
Right now just trying different things. I have already cut way back on the
food intake. I actually don't know enough about dosing to do it 100 percent
right yet. Still learning.
Thanks for your thoughts.
What kind of routine if you don't mind sharing would you suggest? I am on my
own now so I am open to any and all suggestions. Anything that will help.
Thanks.
I have a friend who is pushing the by pass surgery on my and I am too
worried about it's outcome. The lapband I would have done but the other
scares me with the deaths I have heard about just since I went to the
seminar a couple years ago when the last doctor would not ok the surgery.

risk from remaining so overweight in my opinion. But I have to leave that
decision up to you.
As to insulin. Is there no way you can prepare a meal and shoot x amount of
insulin for x amount of carbs? That way you could have your portion of mash
or whatever other carb you choose to accompany that meal.
I am not saying use the insulin to cover massive amounts of food, but on the
other hand it may be harder for you, if comfort eating is a problem, to find
a middle ground between very low carb and overdoing the carb etc. Does that
make sense? I have never been able to see how sliding scale works for people
who want to eat a variety of different foods and sometimes amounts. |

Diana, I know your legs are bad - but can you do anything with your
arms? Any muscle use will suck glucose out of your bloodstream.
Something like sitting-down disco dancing might be a serious help -
and I bet your grandson would love to play too : )

I usually eat around 50-70g net carb/day and can dose my insulin
accordingly. I have found I need to dose for both carb and protein
because I low-carb.
My rules are: 5 units Regular or 3 units Humalog for every 15g total
carb and 30g protein in a meal, another bit for a preprandial over 100,
and another bit for breakfast. These are very specifically empirically
determinated in my body... everyone's mileage would vary a lot.
My bg goals are 70-110 fasting and preprandial and 100-140 postprandial.
I find I need a wide target range to be able to hit constistently.
Having experimented a lot with my rules, they only continue to work for
me if breakfast is less than 30g carb and other meals are less than 60g.
This leaves me room to "cheat" a bit and dose for it and not lose bg
control. But if I go higher, my dosing rules don't work anymore. I
suspect I'd have to experiment a lot to find out what did work at those
levels.
I'd be nervous doing it though... if you really try to get tight control
with high doses of insulin and high carb intake, you're much more likely
to go hypo. If I were going to eat a high carb diet regularly, I'd be
inclined to have much higher bg goals.

but never got to go in this summer because some of my meds say stay out of
the sun and I do burn very easily. Not to mention no fun being in there

Now that I want to go in the weather is turning cooler here. I am always a
day late and a dollar short. :-) I can't swim so my space is also limited in
it to about a five foot square. But I love it anyways.

I don't know how to do the insulin to carb thing. I would do that if I knew
how. I am still researching on how to do that. I think that is a very good
way and glad you and some others agree. That way I don't have the insulin

am complaining but I am not really. I am very weak in my body because my O2
saturation is low and just combing my hair feels like I worked 8 hours.
I do try to use some hand-weights here. When I watch TV I get them out and
use them so the TV keeps my mind off the pain. I see others with diabetes
being able to do things I can't and I get very saddened by it but I do try
because I am not old enough to give up and die yet. Well old yeah but not
the other LOL. If it counts my spirit feels 17 and it just soars.
