Default My personal fibre experiment

Ok. Past experience has shown me that grain fibre has done little for me in
the BM dept as opposed to vegetable and fruit fibre.

So, just to see if my memory was better than past reality I experimented on
myself.

I am a huge low starch eater and my choice of vegetables and fruit reflect
that. I eat large quantities of raw (lesser amounts cooked) of fibrousy low
carb veggies and some low GI fruits.

Bear in mind also, that my IR is at a point now where I can eat more carbs
than I could 7 years ago.

So, for the past three days I have added wholegrain cereals, bread, potatoes
and rice to my diet. I have still eaten salad and other veggies but in much
lesser amounts - hard to fit a lot of stuff in after some protein and a
starchy food. I have still kept up the same fluid and exercise levels.

I fully expected to go from 3-4 soft, non odorous bm's a day down to one
offensive style one (sorry folks). I was gobsmacked, I haven't been to
the loo for bm's for 3 full days. I am well and truly bogged up. Now, what I
have eaten is the allegedly healthy foods (packed with fibre, blah blah).

Bg's have been up but not hugely up. This morning I have gone back to my
normal eating plan. Breakfast was a frittata with plenty of veggies in it,
a couple of eggs and a little low fat cheese cooked in it. I have already
had snack #1 - a bowl of raw vegetables dipped in hummus.

Snack #2 will be my usual smoothie of brewer's yeast (my vit B bomb),
strawberries, low fat, plain yoghurt and Splenda. Lunch will be canned
salmon and plateful of raw salad veggies etc etc with avocado slices and
home made vinaigrette (balsamic and olive oil with garlic/herbs etc).

I will gladly give you my egg and dairy allergies. Then you know what you
have to do. You'll be going in no time!

Thankfully aside from immediately following having the baby, I have never
suffered from constipation. And then I think it was more of a mental thing.
I just didn't want to go from all the pain down there. Actually there was a
brief period of time when I was really hyperthyroid when my bowels got
messed up for a couple of weeks, but I know that was the cause.

Surprising consequence.

Possibly a little psyllium tonight if things don't, er, work
themselves out?

Impertinent question: How old are you, Ozgirl?

On balance, those sound like they are very low in fiber.

Small clarification - brown rice, whole grain bread, and jackets on potato.
Add that to the fact that they filled me too much to have my usual amount of
non starch veggies.

Hmmm. OK. Not too old to have a good IR response to diet. I'm hoping, and
I'm 63 and not really overweight.

I'd still guess they may be fairly low in fiber.

I do think that any change in diet can set you off your usual pattern.
/after some time on the new regimin your gut woudl probably adjust to the
whole grains. Not that I can see any reason to do this, but things
usually do com eout in the end adn balance out:-)
