Default My Sister Admitted To Hospital

Ya'll might not now or remember, but I have an identical twin sister.
She was admitted to the hospital today for cellulitis and an infected
foot. She had cellulitis once before in 1987, and it was a 14 day
hospital stay and they saved her leg. This is the opposite leg and it
got bad so fast ... she just called me to tell me that she is having
immediate surgery, like starting right now, and may lose one toe, her
little one for sure ... or maybe the leg ... I knew they were admitting
her and I stayed with her till 230p today, but I had to make my way
home. When I left her, it wasn't so dire, they were just going to open
and drain the foot part, but now it seems they are going to have to do
more, ... it seems to have turned into this very bad situation. Man,
talk about pouring when it rains!!!! She is frightened, and I can't
be there. Rainbow

Hi Rainbow
I'm sorry about your sister, that is very frightening. Does she have
diabetes?
I don't know about your beliefs in prayer, but I have found it
immensely helpful for my peace of mind vis a vis health issues. May
things go well for her, and may her (and your) fears be minimal.

That is such sad news, Rainbow... Where does your sister live?

I have to wonder... is she diabetic? If so, what kind of control does
she maintain?

You and your sister are in our thoughts and prayers.

Sorry to hear about your sister's problems, Rainbow. Good to know she
has a sister like you who is supporting her in this time of need. My
best wishes to both of you for a good resolution to all of this.

Best,

We're twins, and yes, she is diabetic, but her control of it is not real
good. The surgery went okay. They have not as yet amputated anything,
only cleaned out the foot and put a drain in it. They did tell her they
might have to do another surgery "eventually", but maybe not. I was with
her all day and she is holding up OKAY ... not perfect, just okay. The
doctor she saw today was answering her questions, so she was frustrated,
and we will take issue with that tomorrow. For now, she is on regular
insulin and they have also put her on glypizide (spelling?) ... She also
had a testy time with dietary today ... but we took care of that. Looks
like about a week in the hospital and then wound care at home. She was
terrified she was going to wake up without her leg, from the surgery!
The surgeon told her this was going to take a long time to heal. I only
have exprience with one other person had had to do this, and it took a
long time, so we know what we are in for. Thanks
for all your kind words, folks ... we live to fight another day!

Heard from her last night, It seemed like her new doc wasn't listening
to her or ignoring some of what my sister was saying and she was pretty
frustrated, but all of a sudden, she has a bunch of new meds and he doc
did give her the things she asked for. I was there when the doc was and
I agreed that he doc seemed really aloof ... we were going to asl for a
different doc today, if we felt that this hospital doc wasn't going to
address one problem. She really blew us off about it, then suddenly
prescribed something to help her.
What this was, is something we call "food aversion". For both her and I,
if we are somewhat out of control, blood sugar wise we get this as a
result Sometimes it happens when I am in control, for no real reason. I
read somewhere very recently about this being something some diabetics
go thru, but I cant remember where tht article was. You just can't eat.
Even the smell of food turns you of and there is almost nothing you can
stand to eat. I know this sounds funny, but it's true. You might be able
to eat one specific food, like potatoes, but that is all. It can last
many days. You also get very intense indigestion. My sister had been in
this state for about a week, prior to hospitalization, and the doc kind
of blew it off, but then DID give her 2 meds for it. We've run this by
one or 2 docs before and got a "sort of" answer, but it has never been
explained to us. If I can find the link to the article I read, I will
post it here so everyone can read it. She is going to
get a dressing change and maybe the drain removed today. We talked to
the surgery team yesterday and they are saying she may have the rest of
the week in house, there at the hospital, then home. It depends on how
she responds to the meds and so forth. Rainbow

Well, it sounds like things are getting a bit better. I hope they get
better and better quickly. Any diabetic foot issues are very scary.
