| | | Neuropathy in feet? ... a valuable little tip. By lots of socks. Sheets, bedcovers, touching your feet, can be very
irritating. Wear socks to bed to desensitize your feet, more or less.
Works for me. I never thought about sharing this little tidbit till
last night when I tried, for the first time in a long time, going to
bed without socks. I was, quickly, reminded why I wear them. Hope this
helps somebody.

In bed is the only time my feet get free of socks so the skin can
breath. Most of my life I wore sandals but now I live where it gets
colder and must wear socks and shoes. The first thing I do when I walk
in the door is kick off the shoes. I keep the socks on in deference to
the diabetes and the cold floor until bedtime then the feet are finally
free.

I am constantly "finding" unpleasant things in the carpet even with my
slippers on. If I had neuropathy, you can bet I'd be wearing shoes.

In cold weather, I usually wear cotton socks to bed and nothing else.
DH, also a T2, wears wool socks and shorts. I can't stand wool next to
my skin, it makes me itchy. I have to move away when he gets his feet
near me. He says the wool socks keep his feet warm and the circulation
flowing.

I have it real bad - bottom of feet burn and hurt all the time and I
can't stand or walk for very long (embarrising scooter in the
supermarket..haha). I take Lyrica for that and Actos for the
diabetes..... also, B1 and folic acid as per the doctor. I Keep hearing
about the Alpha lipoic Acid and Evening Primrose Oil - so, I just went
out and bought some. Maybe, when I wake up tomorrow, I'll be healed.

Hi John,
I had the same symptoms- so painful that I dared not step outside with bare
feet.Smooth surfaces were bearble but painful. What worked for me, was the
Alpha Lipoic Acid, as Ray suggested. I started taking 1200mg a day for a few
weeks and increased exercise; the pain significantly decreased. That was
200mg tablets totalling 1200mg over the course of each day.
If you do a bit of reading on the ALA you will find that most suggest that
ALA is only effective once absorbed for about 30 minutes. Some recommend
the sustained release variety for this reason.
Mine were the standard common garden variety. The cheapest I found when I
was in the States was sold at Walmart, which is where I got mine. If I
recall correctly the brand was Rexall (?).
Hope you get some good benefits from your new ALA tablets.

I just looked... these are only 100 mg.... guess I'll have to take one
every few minutes....haha. Also got these at Walmart - Spring Valley
brand. I think there were other strengths on the shelf but I had taken
a Lyrica about an hour earlier and had just gone off to lala land and
wasn't paying attention. If we'd had Lyrica during the 60's the drug
culture would have never got off the ground....lol. ("Hey man, wanna
hit off this joint?"......."No thanks, dude.... I just popped a
Lyrica.")
I keep hearing about exercize.... kinda hard when you can't stand up
more than a few minutes at a time. Guess I could just flop around on
the floor for a while.

Hi again John,
Like some of it's predecessors (Neurontin etc.) I've heard Lyrica tends to
have that effect for some. I believe the "street" name for Topomax is
"Stupimax" which leads you to wonder whether there is already a good
current market for these drugs for other than strictly medicinal use? Maybe
the Docs are working on relaxing after a hard day at the office :-)
Aside from the "trip" do you find it helps with your symptoms?

Topamax works great for relieving the pain of neuropathy without side

I'm sure it won't work that fast, but you may see slight improvement in a
few days. |
01-02-2007, 11:16 PM
| | | Re: Neuropathy in feet? ... a valuable little tip. Hi John,
I had neuropathy very similar to what you describe, and the ALA was
quite helpful. I took 2 100 mg tabs 3 times a day, or at times 3 100
mg 2X/day. From the studies I have read, 3 months is a good length of
time to take it, though I saw effects quite a bit sooner, after maybe 2
weeks. One thing that can happen is that it might seem like things are
getting worse rather than better. What can happen is that nerves that
have gone to sleep start re-connecting in fits and starts at first, so
that suddenly you are getting those electric shocks and burning
sensations, perhaps more than usual. This is similar to what happens
when the nerves disconnect, it happens in herky-jerky slow motion. The
difference is that when the nerves are on their way out, the electric
shock is followed by numbness. When the ALA is helping repair, it is
followed by restored nerve function. Kind of the same stage, but
heading in opposite directions.
How are your blood sugar levels? If they are not in range, then the
ALA is fighing to cure something that high blood sugar levels are
causing all over again. That battle is better than just having the high
blood sugar, but the ALA can be a lot more effective if your blood
sugar is not fighting aginst it. For me, with blood sugars in the low
normal range, the ALA did its work and when I stopped taking it
symptoms did not recur. But I have talked with people whose blood sugar
was still on the high side, and when they stopped taking ALA, the
neuropathy would return. and then they'd start taking the ALA and it
would be effective again as long as they kept taking it. So it is not a
substitute for good blood sugar control, but rather a supplement to it.
Good blood sugar control can sometimes reverse neuropathy; ALA can help
reverse neuropathy; together gives you the best chance, though no
absolute guarantees, as damage can get to an irreversible point.
Let us know how it works out for you.

Hi Mack,
Sorry to upset you. I agree that Topomax and others are useful, like
anything else, for some (or most) people some of the time. It does not have
the effect I mentioned for everyone.
What I've written I write from first hand experience and the experience of

Why not just describe your own firsthand experience with Lyrica right here
so everyone can see it?
I'm taking Lyrica & I don't have any problems taking it and it helps. Is it
a magic bullet? Nope, it's not. But, I don't have any extreme side effects
from it. I was slightly sleepy initially & again, initially, at every point
where we increased the dosage but once my body adjusted to it there was no
sleepiness or even drowsiness. You'd probably find that as a side effect of
many medications on the market today.

As to Folic Acid.... now that you mention it, I don't know if the
doctor prescribed (recommended) it for the diebetes, heart health,
neuropathy or just to appear helpful. He just wrote it down on a

I have a soft, clean, unwrinkled bottom sheet that fits. Similar top sheet
but very oversized. I put a bed pillow at the foot of the bed under the
covers - as if it were for someone sleeping at the foot of the bed but
centered rather than one on each side of the bed. It keeps the top sheet off
of my feet. Voila.
I got the idea awhile back from your trick, Nancy F. Thanks!
I also take Lyrica 300 mg per day, EPO and ALA, plus try to take very good
care of my feet & keep my BG in control.

the skin is thick and dry and crinkly but it's not. Painful to walk or
stand for very long. Most of the time feet appear perfectly normal but
feel very swollen. Wierd.

Bg ranges from around 75-97 between meals - Fgb from 100 to 120 - 1 hr
after meals around 140 - 2 hrs after meals around 120. I don't eat
breakfast.

I haven't heard of Topomax before. I'll ask my doctor about it -
perhaps it's an option. I take 300mg of Lyrica once a day, usually
about 5 hours after I get up - that's when the pain and burning start
getting out of hand. I would take it as soon as I get up but I need
that 4 or 5 hours of clear headedness at work before the Lyrica blows
me away. I can still function, think, drive with the lyrica but I'm
addle brained and forgetful on it..... do that staring off into space
thing...haha.
As to how the lyrica works.... great, but only during the "stoned"
phase. When that wears off (about 8 hours) the pain and burning come
back.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not a little old man on a scooter writhing in
pain. I've had it for 2 years, hurts like the devil, severely limits my
mobility and is depressing as hell but, except for the scooter in the
supermarket, in everyday life, I just chug along grinning and baring it
and most people don't even know I have it. This is the only place I
bitch and moan about it. I just dread the day something happens at work
where I have to walk more than 2 hundred feet. My secret will be
out....haha.

it's spelled topamax. it's an anti convulsant used in the prevention
of seizures. To use it you'll have to talk with an endo or a
neurologist. It is prescribed for the treatment of the pain of
neuropathy.
I've found that using 2000 mg of evening primrose oil as well as the
prescribed amount of Topamax works best for me.

Yep. My former Endo. told me all diabetics should wear socks to bed,
neuropathy or not. And if you do have it, at some stage you'll have the ice
cube feet. They'll be so cold you'll want the socks! I wear really thick,
oversized socks to bed. |

Hi Donna, I'm pleased to hear that you are getting some help from the
Lyrica. If you ever find that elusive magic bullet, please let us all
know;-).
Sometimes over the course of our journey here on this earth, we learn and
experience things differently from others - which I guess is part of the
reason for this forum:-). I have personal reasons for not sharing on list my
experience with these drugs (at least for the time being). At the end of the
day ,no one person is always right, (this includes me:-) and sometimes it
can be a prudent thing to let a potential debate slip by in the interests of
the group, and remaining objective. I don't for now, feel the need to get
into a debate(by relating personal experiences on this issue), and
certainly respect the opinion of other long timers here like Mack. Although
we may not always agree on every point, regulars like Mack are what keeps the
group functioning.
Hope you catch up from those holidays soon and have a great 2007.

Hey John, That's why we're here! So we can have a place to bitch and moan to
people who understand :-). It's interesting that you say the day something
happens at work your secret will be out. Until getting my sugar under
control I couldn't see 3 feet in front of me.Muddled through pretty well
though. Don't think anyone caught on...had trouble recognizing faces from
more than about 10 feet . Much better these days.
Here's wishing you success at dealing with your pain.

Hi Mack, I hear you, and empathize with you. I wish for all here that none
were in a position to need to experience any of these drugs first hand.

Understood & respected. My email works, too, not that that is needful here.
Just sayin'.

I have decided that 2007 WILL be better than 2006. <G>
Had a resident of Canberra (did I spell that right?) as an overnight guest
last night. Delightful & he's having tons of fun learning Americanism
close-up.

with good BG control, yes they are reversible to a degree. That
degree will be unique to each individual.
