| | | New Drug... Maybe Found this in the print version of " The Sunday Telegraph" so I don't have a
URL. Have quoted the article in it's entirety:
"Drug Made From Pigs"
A controversial medication made out of pig cells is being tested in diabetic
patients in Russia because scientists are not allowed to conduct trials in
Australia.
A 26-year-old man last week became the first patient to be injected with
DiabeCell, a world -first product developed by Australian company Living
Cell Technologies (LCT), at a Moscow hospital.
"The benefits could be enormous and the ultimate goal will be to get people
off insulin injections", LCT medical director Bob Elliot said.

Hi Loretta,
I guess it is nice to have hope. The checks and measures in place with the
approval process are a good thing though, cause in most cases it should
prevent a drug that has unwanted side effects from reaching the market.
It is exciting to think of the number of people who could be helped or cured
by such a development.
Hope you are well today.

A doctor from New Zealand moved to Mexico some time back because the
experiments of implanting pig islets in humans could not get government
approval. The concept is not new, but the encapsule design itself
probably is. A Google search for terms
Mexico+encapsuled+pig+islet+transplants resulted in 343 finds - http://tinyurl.com/2by3v2.

It seems to me that it would be good news for type II diabetics too.
After all some people with metabolic syndrome go on to have type II
diabetes and some do not. A probable difference is whether their
pancreas can keep up with the increased insulin needs or not. If a
type II diabetic got additional beta islet cells, perhaps they could
then not be diabetic, but only have metabolic syndrome at that point.

Hi Frank,
I looked a little further at the company website and found:
"
Living Cell Technologies ("LCT") was established in 1987. The Company's
science is based on early pioneering research conducted by one of the world's
leading diabetes researchers, Professor Robert Elliott at the University of
Auckland. LCT's corporate office is in Adelaide, the research and technology
division in Auckland and product and regulatory divisions are located in the
United States.
Dr. Elliot it seems was originally from NZ -maybe this is the doc of which
you speak who went south of the border.
How frustrating it must be for the innovators of such treatments to be
frustrated and confounded by the bureaucracy of their respective
governments, so much so that they have to move out of the "civilized"
(Mexico and Russia)world in order to complete their research. The best info
on their site was that it may be ready for marketing by 2010-11.
Hope today finds you well.
Best Wishes,
Craig, Type 2
