| | | New drug for me Hi all. I'm Anthony. I've been here before and received some great
advice from some of you.
I'm writing because I have just been put on a new drug for my
diabetes. I am currently on diaformin 3x1000mg a day and my latest A1c
is 12.5 so the reason for the new drug, which is Diamicron MR or
Glicazide 30mg.
I've been told to take 1 a day for 3 days then if bgl is over 10 for
fasting level, take 2 and after 3 days if still over 10 take 3 until I
get to 4 a day. I'm hoping I'll only need the 1 but I don't know how
my body will react so it's all new to me.
I'm just asking for advice while using this medication since I know
that I can get hypos from it. Any advice you can send this way will be
greatly appreciated.
Thanks for listening and hope to hear from some you soon.

Anthony, I know nothing about Glicazide, so I'll leave it to
others to comment there. For them, some translations:
Diaformin is Metformin, and a fasting over 10 is over
180mg/dl.
However, I have some questions on related aspects. If you've
been here before have you attempted to put this into
practice? http://www.alt-support-diabetes.org/NewlyDiagnosed.htm
If so, what was the problem? Did the numbers stay high
despite cutting carbs?
It may help if you let us know your menu over the past 24
hours and the test results you had in that time.
Cheers, Alan, T2, Australia.

page before. I haven't been very good lately (for the last 6 months or
so).
My wife and I became the proud parents of a bouncing baby girl in
June, which has been wonderful for us but there have been some pretty
major complications along the way.
Our baby started seizing at 2 days old and has been diagnosed with
epilepsy. For the first 4 1/2 months we have been in and out of
hospital on a never ending journey.
I spent over 2 weeks in there living on hospital food which was not
diabetes freindly because I was not a paitent and therefore had to eat
what was given to me. Our meals have been very irregular and mostly
high carb, which is why my A1c has shot up to 12.5 from 7.9 in Feb
this year.
In the last 24 hours I've had steak potato and peas and corn last
night for tea, 3 weetbix this morning for breakfast and I just had a
tomato sandwich for lunch.
Thanks
Anthony

you don't say anything about your daily diet and exercise. Switching

If you don't mind some suggestions, I'll offer some just on
that meagre information.
Until you get "test, test, test" going again:
1. Throw out the weet-bix. Never eat another. Or any other
processed breakfast cereal. You just ate 66gms carb for
breakfast before you added the milk, so you probably ate
80gms. No wonder your numbers aren't good. I have days where
I eat less than that quantity of carbs in total.
For better breakfast ideas, read this: http://loraldiabetes.blogspot.com/20...reakfasts.html
If you think that's "over the top" compare your one-hour
post-prandials for weet-bix and an omelette.
2. Limit yourself to one slice of bread at lunch, max. For
example, my lunch sandwich was cheese and salad, open on one
slice. If you're out, toss the top slice in the bin. if
you're hungry, have lots of fillings but no extra bread.
3. Cut way back on the spuds, and never have corn and
potatoes in the same meal. Same applies to breads, pastas,
rice etc. One starch only in a meal and only a small portion
of that. replace them with coloured veges - greens,
capsicum, pumpkin etc.
Those tips are just "emergency" starters; modify them with
tests ONE hour after you finish meals. This is how I put
Jennifer's advice into practice myself: http://loraldiabetes.blogspot.com/20...ew-adjust.html
Best wishes for the little one.
Cheers Alan, T2, Australia.

That's good advice Alan. (Like you didn't already know that.) I told
my doctor I practiced this method and he told me that is called the
exchange system. I didn't even know that. I just figured the carbs
would compound by eating all that in one
setting so I spread them out over meals. You go a lot further than I
do in carb restriction, but I give you credit because that is hard to
do.

Generally, that's true. I've found that the Kellog's Special K High
Protein with nine net carbs per serving is not too bad. It's the only
'mainline' cereal I've found with decent numbers.

Oroweat makes a 'double fibre' bread that's significantly lower in net
carbs. There are a couple of other companies doing similar. One slice of
the Oroweat DF actually comes in lower than two WASA fibre wafers.

I'd also add that nuts and cheese make good low carb snack foods.
IMHO - you're always in good hands if you listen to Alan - he seems to
really have his stuff together. |

Hi Anthony,
So sorry to hear about your daughter. I hope she's okay now. No
wonder you had trouble making your diet a priority!
I've got to second Alan's dietary advice. However, I will add that I
am stricter than Alan with my diet--no food made with wheat, except
low carb tortillas, no potatoes, minimal corn, no fruit juices (might
as well drink regular soda), no rice. I'm not saying that you should
do as I do--you may not need to--but I wanted you to know that it is
possible to eliminate these things and fill up on veggies and low
glycemic fruits.
I think we can guarantee, if you make a stab at it--even if you can't
do the test, test, test just now--you'll BGs will improve.
As for the glicazide, I've not had experience with it personally,
however, it seems to me by prescribing it, your doctor has made it
necessary for you to test, test, test, in order to avoid the
possibility of hypos.
Glad you are able to take a moment to consider your own health. Your
little girl needs you around.
Best regards,
Michelle C., T2
