miss much. It was the worst Academy Awards ever, the commercials was the
best part by far.

Hi Anon,
I agree that the commercials were very interesting.
Honestly, I do not how the awards programs compare with each other
over the years, because the people involved have slowly changed, as
some actors and performing artists have aged, moved on, and/or died,
while fresh new stars are always arriving to capture the attention of
the world.... I do know that about an hour before the awards were over
I felt a very strong urge to go to sleep, so I retired and went to
bed.

I TiVo'd it. What was up with what commercials?
I watched part of it. I found ELLEN enjoyable. The production aspects seemed
to be both well done & fresh.

Some of the awards went to people/movies that made me very happy, but I
really do not get the appeal of THE DEPARTED. I have only seen about 3
nominated films, so far, but that is one of them & I found it a completely
wasted use of celluloid! How many times do mob stories need to be told?

I really enjoy and appreciate Ellen very much. I was glad to see her
in such a prominent and leading role for the whole show.
I have not seen "The Departed", but I have seen "Little Miss Sunshine"
and "Babel"... I thought they were both remarkable films...

Whether you watch them or not (I'm a "not") you pretty much can't get
away from them. For over a week before, all weekend, and now the
"post-Oscar" crap this week -- <yawn>
It cracks me up every time I hear some 21 year old say, "I've worked
for this my *whole* life!" Your *whole* life?! Wow!
For me, the best part of the whole fiasco is the movies that TCM dusts
off. :-)

I like her, too. I miss Billy Crystal, who consistently had me in

that stupid narration just plain sucked. Maybe it was me, maybe I should

I thought the bit I saw when I changed channels at the end
of last night was excellent - best actor (good speech), best
actress (oddly worded praise for Her Majesty and her
hairdo:-) and best picture (haven't seen it yet).
It was good because the speeches were mercifully short and
so was my viewing. I never saw the commercials.
It has given me a reason to see the Idi Amin film. Being old
enough to remember that disgusting imbecilic sociopath when
he was in power (not that I'm showing any prejudice:-) I'm
fascinated to see how they can develop a sympathetic
characterisation of him.
This report is subjective - but pretty accurate as I
remember it: http://everything2.com/index.pl?node...&lastnode_id=0

I want to use Chuck's post to respond to the Academy Awards in general
because I think he hit the nail on the proverbial head. Entertainment
is in the eye of the beholder. These past few days I've been immersed
in the world of Oscar and frankly I am pretty talked out about it.
With friends in the business and out. Everyone seems to have their
opinions and here are a few of my opinions that I don't really care if
anyone agrees with or not...
- Jerry Seinfeld was funnier in his short presentation than Ellen was
the entire evening. Not blaming her because it is a thankless job to
host the Oscars and she wasn't helped by the material written for
her. Her main problem was she tried to avoid any kind of
controversy. Big mistake. Art is not well served if it does not make
some kind of statement.
- It's about time Scorsese won. Great to see Spielberg, Coppola, and
Lucas (looking a bit like a highbrow Three Stooges) present the award.
- "The Departed" was the best film of the year. "Little Miss
Sunshine" shouldn't have even been up for anything let alone been
given any awards.
- The whole "what are they wearing" thing about the Oscars has been
done to death. I don't care if everyone showed up in blue jeans and t-
shirts. It's has little to do with the films. But realistically
that's what the hoople heads in Maintown USA want..they don't really
care about honoring the films or the art, it's all about the clothes,
the jewels, and making fun of the fashion goofs.
- This is the first year I feel that Old Hollywood is finally
releasing its grip on the Academy Awards. Time for a fresh take on
things.
- Nice to see Al Gore got his personality and groove back. As much as
I love Hillary and would vote for her in 2008, he's the only one in
the Democratic party that has a realistic chance of winning and
winning big.
- I'm tired of every award show winner thanking God in their
speeches. If he or she really has anything to do with an award being
given to someone, he or she must also be responsible for thousands of
other dreamers NOT getting even a nomination. Personally, I think God
is spending no time helping someone get the award and should be
spending all of his or her time trying to figure out how to put some
food in a child's stomach who hasn't eaten for days.
- The show was way too long for the viewing audience at home and even
worse for those who attended. Next year let me Produce/Direct/Write
and Host the Academy Awards and I promise to make it two hours or
less.
- Forget all the Red Carpet interviews, they are phony personified.
Have some hidden cameras in the bathrooms and at the post parties.
Then you'd hear what people are really saying! Better than any
reality TV show you've ever seen.
And that's all I have to say about that...

| | | Re: OT - Academy Awards Except for the fashions, I agree with you completely Kurt. Ellen was
given that material. thank goodness, but she should have written her
own. I thought that Jerry Seinfeld was fab and that next year they
should hire him if he wants the gig.
My favorite movie of the year was The Departed. The queen was
wonderful, I liked Little Miss Sunshine, I didnt see the Iwo Jima
movie. I thought scorcese deserved it not because of his body of work,
but because of the direction on the Departed.
were there shock waves through the audience when Eddie Murphy didnt win.

Correct. I have seen many in the past.
You prejudged the program

Correct again. I plead guilty. I am a crabby cynical 40 year old
diabetic. My wife will tell you too!
>So, I will ask again, why didn't you just watch something else?
Didn't see that you asked me previously. I watched Batman Begins. Now
that is quality TV!

I won't know until I see it, but an interview I saw with the
guy who won the oscar (prior to last night) gave that
impression for at least the opening sections. However, I'll
defer opinion until I see the film.
