When I tell it to delete messages that list Chung as "Author:Andrew
Chung, PHD (or whatever he is using)" it deletes almost every current
message regardless of who the author was.
What am I doing wrong?

Read this when you get time http://www.usyd.edu.au/su/oldnetting...tra/nkill.html
Here's the short version;
Wildcards
Killfiles will also respond to wildcard characters, meaning characters that
can represent any character or string of characters.
To take the example of "advertise" above, if you place that word in the
killfile it will screen only messages containing that exact word. But by
using a wildcard character, which may be the asterisk (*) or question mark
(?) but can vary from system to system, more variations on a word can be
filtered.
Therefore "advertise*" will filter out "advertise", "advertisement",
"advertised", etc.
However don't be overzealous about where you place the wildcard, because
"adv*", for example, would filter everything above but also words like
"adverse" "adversity", "adverb", etc., which might be relevant to your
interests. |

Whoever suggested that I use only chung's address that appears between
the < and > marks should know it not only did not work, but it deleted
all the messages in the group including the ones I had not viewed yet.

They are a pointless waste of time and effort.
If you do not want to read a post then do not read it.
The only time I have ever found a KF useful is when a poster floods a group
so badly that it is imposable to see real post. |

Your answer has nothing whatever to do with the workings of Agent, so
was not an answer at all. Instead you were trolling me on another
subject to see how I would react. You got the desired result, so I do
hope you are happy now.
Right now you are wasting bandwidth with your continued trolls and so
am I by answering you.

Chuck,
I believe he is trolling you due to the 'political' nature of your
signature. Never mind that you are positive poster to this newsgroup, but
because you probably hold views that he doesn't agree with no matter how
true they are he had to take a swipe at you.
I wish I could help you with your kill-file. Unfortunately I do not use
Agent. Which version are you using, perhaps I could dredge up some
information for you. Also if you are able to paste your kill-file into a
response possibly having more eyes see it would help... although I would
just post what you are trying to use to kill-file Chung with. |

No
My answer was that KFs are a waste of time.
(This is not Agent specific -- KFs in general)
You either end up killing off to many posts or not enough.
It is simply easer not to read a post that you do not want to read than
trying to set up a KF that eliminates post you do want to read.
If the sig is longer than the rest of the post then it is spam.
And in this case it is also off topic.
I have only made a few post to this group but I have found this group to be
most unfriendly.
I asked a simple question about onions, because I have an unusual reaction
to them.
I want to know if anyone else had experienced the same.
The answers I got were mostly actuations that I was eating to much or that
onions could not cause a problem.
Not much support there. |

Marking a subject OT can still be trolling.
troll v.,n. To utter a posting on Usenet designed to attract predictable
responses or flames. Derives from the phrase "trolling for newbies"; which
in turn comes from mainstream "trolling";, a style of fishing in which one
trails bait through a likely spot hoping for a bite.
The well-constructed troll is a post that induces lots of newbies and
flamers to make themselves look even more clueless than they already do,
while subtly conveying to the more savvy and experienced that it is in fact
a deliberate troll.
Trolls are particularly prevalent in discussion groups on religion or
politics or other traditionally controversial topics. A troll will openly
denounce another user's opinion or denounce a religion that newsgroup users
seem to be members of. A newsgroup troll always makes caustic statements
that never get to the source of a discussion but are purely aimed at raising
havoc. These statements are referred to as "flamebait".

Thank you Craig.
I appreciate what you said. I too figured he is baiting me simply
because of my sigline. I wonder how many people have noticed the
accelerated rate of Americans being killed in Iraq and now we are
about to send another 22,000 over there. I really feel sorry for the
soldiers that are doing their level best to fulfill their duty, but
cannot see why some of us are opposed to the war. This all reminds me
way too much of what we went through in Vietnam.

Note to Davy: Reread the subject line of this thread. What are the

means "off topic."
You, on the other hand, are just out to start and then continue a

Or are you baiting Davybear ? A sig like yours will draw a lot of fire. But
I guess if you like to argue, it's your nickle.
BTW, did you check for wildcards in your killfile? It's either going to be a
? (question mark) or a *(asterisk). I don't know which one is used by Agent.
If you have one of those symbols in your KF it could be the cause of your
missing messages. |

It has from a few, and only a few, since the first day I posted it.
That was quite some time back, perhaps even a couple of years. In the
beginning those flaming me over it were all Bush supporters that
believed all the lies being parroted by Bush, Cheney, Rove and
company.
I very much look forward to the day when it is no longer necessary to
post it in order to keep the total up to date because there will not
be any American soldiers in Iraq anymore.

Okay, now I know what is meant by wildcards. I was accustomed to the
asterisk being used when searching for a file, etc. but not the
question mark. I don't believe I have seen any of them in Chung's name
or address after the word "Author".
I will be looking more closely. Thank you.

I use thunderbird or outlook express, only because it's easier for me, so I
put the username & a askerisk where it say "where the from contains people".
Example: Chung*
Anything with Chung in the FROM line gets deleted, but I still get replys
from everyone else. |

Chuck,
I downloaded a copy of agent. The only way I could get a filter to
work was to highlight the offending message and right-click on it.
Then go down to filters, then new kill file. If the word "Author:"
wasn't infront of the persons name, it didn't work.
Something else to check. I kinda like Agent, but it's a bit more than
I need. |

Fine, and when you check that out, tell me how someone gets their name
signed to another persons post. Personally, I think you got yourself
deleted when you replied to Chung. That's assuming that Agent is smart
enough to do that, since you are not. ;-)

Really, it worked great on my trial version of agent. Sorry it didn't work

Me too.
I have a later version of Agent that I bought last year. I stopped
using it because there were enough changes that I became uncomfortable
with it. I guess since I paid out good money for it I need to give up
this older version and become accustomed to the newer one.
I think when I close it this time I will do just that.

Davybear,
Onions affect my blood sugar as well. One thing that I've learned from
reading this newsgroup would be that different people can spike from
different foods. I spike from eating anything with a carb in it, while
others are able to eat foods that I can only dream about. |

And what does this have to do with the subject of this thread?
Me thinks somehow it was put in this one by mistake. Need to watch the

Thank you for your response.
I have been trying to research this onion thing.
Everything I have found so far suggest that onions are supposed to lower BG
not cause a spike.
It seems really strange that it would cause a spike but it does in me. |
