| | | OT: Allergy rant My allergies are driving me nuts. When I lived in the Midwest, I went
through two rounds of densitization shots at 3 years apiece. Honestly, the
shots did help and alleviated some of my allergies, however, I remained
allergic to ragweed regardless, and still had the capacity to form new
allergies. Finally moved away from "Green Country", as our neck of the
woods was called, to the Mojave desert (southern Nevada). We get 4.5 inches
of rain here, yet things still grow. Overall there is significantly less
pollen and I'm doing much better most of the time. However, I am still
forming new allergies to the native plants that do grow here (sagebrush),
and the trees that people plant that will survive in this climate. But the
kicker, is the *&^$%$# ragweed. Yes, it lives here too, and is making me
miserable. Since my desensitization shots, I don't have severe classic
allergy symptoms--runny nose and eyes--but I feel like I have the flu. My
muscles ache; I'm weak, I'm tired, and worst of all, is that I feel
constantly on the verge of having low blood glucose. I'm *not* really
having low blood glucose. I've checked. So my challenge is to ignore a
feeling that normally would require quick action. I keep telling myself
"it's just the ragweed; it's just the ragweed." I suppose the nasty stuff
would thrive in Nome, Alaska as well.
Thanks for letting me vent.

Allergies are so miserable Michelle. I know there's not much to offer
in way of comfort, but I hope you're feeling better soon.

You might also be checked for food allergies (if you haven't already) and
avoid all foods related to ragweed. http://www.aaaai.org/media/news_rele.../08/080206.stm
For years I suffered from what my Drs. told me were allergies. But they
never tested me for foods. Turns out I am allergic to eggs, dairy and
almonds. And when eating these on a regular basis, I was getting delayed
symptoms so I never connected the food to my ear and sinus infections. Now
that those things are out of my diet, my inhalant allergies are much more
bearable.
Also, you might want to rethink any allergy meds you are on. Zyrtec gave my
daughter and I allergy symptoms. We felt much more alive when we stopped
taking that stuff. |

| | | Re: Allergy rant My allergies have been pretty bad this year, and I also live in a desert
,outside of Tucson. One of the biggest culprits here for me is the desert
broom...that stuff grows wherever land has been disturbed...which means it
grows along the roads in rural areas. I have never had problems with trees
but this year it seems that either the ash or mulberry tree is bothering me.
When outsiders planted the olive tree, allergies started showing up
everywhere...now in our county planting of olive trees, Mulberry trees and
Bermuda grass is banned. People that let the Bermuda grass grow to the
seeding tassels get citations.(These are yards that were established before
the ban.) The grass must be kept clipped or you get a ticket. We have
chosen to not have grass...hubby has a terrible allergy to Bermuda. So we
only have plants that thrive in the desert and don't take much watering.
(Water is also very important here..we have been in a 10 year drought)Our
back yard is decomposed granite and outlined in brick. We do have Ca Pepper
trees but they are evergreens and don't seem to bother many people. People
with asthma used to come to Az for their health...but when they came they
brought their seeds from home so brought the allergy prone plants with them.
I don't remember having allergies as a child here in the desert but I sure
have them now.

my Internist told me not to take those meds again as drug allergies get
worse not better and one day they may cause my throat to swell shut. Another
drug I took(can't remember the name but people take it instead of Ace

off of that drug too. Ace Inhibitors gave me serum rashes.

Hi Julie,
I knew with your allergy experiences you could relate. Like you, I was
never tested for food allergies, because the allergist said the symptoms
that I was relating to a specific food were atypical of food allergies.
(Back then I thought I was allergic to wheat. Ironically, it is one of the
worst foods for spiking my BG.) He also said that tests for food allergies
weren't as accurate as the pollen tests, so he was hesitant to do and charge
me for them.
How did you figure out what foods you are allergic to?
I'm going to read the link you provided. Thank you!

| | | Re: Allergy rant Hi Jacquie,
I live over the hill from Vegas, not quite as much "civilization", but a lot
of the same trees have been planted in both places. Mulberry, Olive and Ash
are very popular. Like your area, Vegas has banned the planting of Mulberry
trees due to the allergies. I can't blame people for wanting trees in a
desert. ;-) However, I'm glad the Mulberries have been banned; they seem
to be very prolific pollen producers.
I can relate to your husband's Bermuda allergy. I'm allergic to all kinds
of grass. Fortunately, overall there is not much of it here.
Hope the Broom stops doing it's thing soon and you feel better.

I had the RAST test done. It's a blood test. I had it done at a
naturopath. I kept taking my daughter to allergists. She saw three of
them. All three said to her, "You don't have any food allergies!", as
though they were psychic. Very strange. They never bothered to test her
for them, nor did my allergist test me for them. These days they are more
common though so perhaps you'll have better luck with an allergist than we
did. |

I got sooo sick when I had the scratch test done on my back. They gave me a
double dose of Benadryl. My mom had taken me out to lunch. She said I
passed out in my plate. I don't remember. Two days later, she served me my
sandwich. It had a dent in it where my nose had landed. |

Aha! You went outside the medical establishment. Seems to be a common

Many years ago, I had a client who came from Toronto. She told me she
absolutely hated Vancouver. I asked her why, when she was so unhappy, she
continued to stay in Vancouver. She told me that it was the only place in
the country that didn't have ragweed. I don't know if it is true or not, but
if things get too bad you could always try Vancouver!

shade trees. In fact we have a 25-30 ft Mesquite tree that was actually here
before the house was built, it was just a little ugly thing...with a bit of
water it grew and now shades the whole dog yard on the side of the house. We
no longer water it now since the root has gotten long enough to get the damp
from the aquifer. I think in Texas the Mesquite is seen as desert brush
That's what I like about the rural area where we live very few people have
grass...in Tucson you still see allot of grass.

Thanks. I've seen signs that I'm developing an allergy to breads made with
yeast, although not to other wheat products. I haven't found anything else
containing yeast to try since I noticed this, though. |

>>> Honestly, the shots did help and alleviated some of my allergies,
>>> however, I remained allergic to ragweed regardless, and still had the
>>> capacity to form new allergies. Finally moved away from "Green
>>> Country", as our neck of the woods was called, to the Mojave desert
>>> (southern Nevada). We get 4.5 inches of rain here, yet things still
>>> grow. Overall there is significantly less pollen and I'm doing much
>>> better most of the time. However, I am still forming new allergies to
>>> the native plants that do grow here (sagebrush), and the trees that
>>> people plant that will survive in this climate. But the kicker, is the
>>> *&^$%$# ragweed. Yes, it lives here too, and is making me miserable.
>>> Since my desensitization shots, I don't have severe classic allergy
>>> symptoms--runny nose and eyes--but I feel like I have the flu. My
>>> muscles ache; I'm weak, I'm tired, and worst of all, is that I feel
>>> constantly on the verge of having low blood glucose. I'm *not* really
>>> having low blood glucose. I've checked. So my challenge is to ignore a
>>> feeling that normally would require quick action. I keep telling myself
>>> "it's just the ragweed; it's just the ragweed." I suppose the nasty
>>> stuff would thrive in Nome, Alaska as well.
>>> Thanks for letting me vent.

>> You might also be checked for food allergies (if you haven't already) and
