Default OT - Attention Mack

Mack, do you know how to get rid of the low-life that is posting all
this stuff about MI5 being out to get him?

He is posting to whole bunch of newsgroups.

Thank, my friend.
I hope you had a good Christmas and a sane and happy New Years.

I received this from a friend on my needlework group, who had received
it from her bridge group in Canada. I think the guy needs to take his
meds! It is interesting, though to read this.

Gillian
Quoting:

The MI5 poster: His name is Mike Corley, he is an IT professional but
alas he has mentalhealth issues. Here are some details about Mike
Corley. He lives in London, UK. He first began his postings to usenet,
BBS, and forums in 1995, unsurprisingly first to alt. conspiracy.

He has his own website: http://www.five.org.uk/

"There have been numerous newspaper articles and online thesis about
Mike's postings, this is a BBC article on the subject:"
http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/alabaster/A164404

"And amongst many other covers of the Mike Corley phenomenon there has
been a modern opera about this usenet legend:"
http://www.thecorleyconspiracy.com/

The problem is amplified by posters who reply to Mikes X-post floods
without snipping, and without removing the crossposts. But also Mike
Corley sets "follow-up" groups to his MI5 posts, this is where he hasn't
actually posted to a specific group but it's listed as "follow-up" in
the crossposts, the lusers who reply, their posts show up in groups that
Mike wants flooded. Mike Corley has set uk. misc as follow-up to all his
posts, (which I've removed) it gets flooded with the replies, and of
course the X-posting. Mike Corley has been doing this since 1995, and he
knows what he is doing, he avoids killfiles/plonk/block by morphing and
using pay-as-you-go dial-up.

Filters rarely have an effect as in this example, if you set the
criteria as "MI_5", then the flood morph to "MIfive" or whatever. He
dosen't post via google dispite the headers, nor are the email addies
valid, he dances between proxy servers such as altopia etc, filtering
has no effect. The simple rule with Mike Corley floods is to ignore and
not to reply. Mike will take his medication and eventually stop.....
until the next time. But if lusers do the foolish and
reply/x-post/fail-to-snip, then Mike Corley sticks around. So don't spam
your pointless replies across dozens of groups.

I'm not Mack and I don't play him on TV but I *can* tell you that
Supernews apparently stops that crap. At any rate, all I'm getting
are the posts from people who don't know how to set up the KF asking
what to do about this guy --

So -- (1) Get Supernews or (2) set up a KF.

I'm sure there are a lot of other things to try besides that.

Good luck!

It's hard to filter a constantly changing version of the subject.
I have lots of people in my KF but they don't change their names every few
posts & if they're posting on a thread they don't change the little details
like where the spaces are, using a ' instead of a . & so on.
Delete key getting lots of workout.

At least we aren't (yet?) here being flooded by hundreds/day of nonsense
messages from a variety of names under apparently endless subject heading,
as the cancer group has been for a few weeks (*seems* to have slacked off
now....)

What guy? He seems to be filtered out by my 4+ crosspost filter on

I have been putting him in my KF and also putting the subject line in
there, but it hasn't stopped the junk.

The food NG is being flooded with idiotic posts for cheap shoes, clothing,

He's been hitting every newsgroup I read, so he's flooding all the
groups at whatever site is providing him connectivity.

From old spamhunting hobbies, such behavior is not called "spam", but
"spew", because the posts rae not identical. But they're so similar,
and so cross-posted, that the people who monitor for spam and cancel
the messages cancel it on site.

Unfortunately, not all news feeds accept these very helpful spam
cancellation messages, such as Google Groups. And many idealistic NNTP
providers believe that that "freedom of speech" includes freedom to
overdo it, and refuse to accept any cancel messages whatsoever. And
unfortunately for me, Google Groups doesn't provide the full headers
so that I can review them and track him back to the "NNTP-Posting-
Host" entry, where he originally submits the spew, and get him slapped
down.

Can't you see who it's from and just ignore his posts? That's what I
do. I do that with a few others too. They come up in blue, and I read
them...or not. :-)

Hi, BJ --

This discussion is taking place on a lot of groups I read, and someone
somewhere posted a string that works in Agent. I believe someone else
posted a string that works for OE.

If I can find them, I'll post them here (unless someone else does it
first). If nothing else, it might give you some ideas.

It's not so much a problem for us with unlimited broadband, but those that
are on dial-up, or have metered connections try to get rid of as much
extraneous junk as possible, hence deleting it, or not pulling it at all if
the reader supports that option. Unfortunately since he changes providers so
much, he can get away with it. My Charter account limits X-posts to 3 ng's
at a time, which would be nice if other providers follow suit. Some of us
are just overly fastidious I guess, and don't like a lot of trash when we do
this. I for one hit so many newsgroups, blogs, RSS feeds, and certain
software and hardware forums that it just gets REALLY annoying having to
wade through all the chaff to get to the wheat.

Seeing who it appears to be from does no good at all since he changes
his identity with almost every one of them.

It is pretty clear which ones he has sent, but it just clutters every
newsgroup that he posts to and I would much rather find a way to
killfile him and his garbage regardless of what name he uses.

right click on the newsgroup name. click on folder properties towards
the bottom of the popup menu.

then under receiving messages click on Usenet cross posting. then
check the over ride default settings and customize the settings to
your needs.

I'm on 10M/1M connect with Charter, but you have to remember, on average I
wade through something like 2500+ posts daily with all the stuff I'm into.
And that doesn't count answering whatever posts, and/or posting on blogs and
forums and stuff. I try my level best to get rid of as much crap as I
possibly can...

I haven't seen much on motzarella. They filter spam pretty well, too,
judging by replies.
