Default OT: ATTN VERIZON USERS...ALT GROUPS *ARE* BEING CUT

Someone wrote in the other thread that they didn't think that this
group would be cut. ALL ALT. groups are getting the boot. See below
what Usenet groups will be here: Notice that all ALT groups are
missing.

IMPORTANT: CHANGE IN VERIZON NEWSGROUP SERVICE

On 06/24/2008, Verizon will be modifying its Newsgroup offerings to
only offer groups in the Big-8 Newsgroup hierarchies, which are listed
below. Users will not be able to post or download from any other
newsgroups.

comp.*
humanities.*
misc.*
news.*
rec.*
sci.*
soc.*
talk.*

More information on the Big 8 hierarchies is available at
www.big-8.org.

The 0.verizon.* newsgroup hierarchy will also continue to be
available.

In preparation for this change, you will need to modify your news
client(s) and unsubscribe from all newsgroups other than the
newsgroups listed above. Failure to do so may interfere with the
functioning of the Verizon network or use of the network by other
Verizon users which is a violation of our Acceptable Use Policy.

INFORMATION ABOUT CHANGES TO YOUR NEWSGROUP SERVICE

When will Verizon change its News service to carry only the Big 8?

The change will be effective on June 24, 2008. After June 24th,
Verizon’s Newsgroup service will carry only the Big 8 news hierarchies
and the 0.verizon.* hierarchy.

If I continue to use the Verizon News service, are any changes to my
software required?

There are no changes required to your software, but you will need to
unsubscribe from all Newsgroups other than the Big 8 hierarchies and
the 0.verizon.* hierarchy noted above. The following link explains
how to subscribe and unsubscribe in Outlook Express:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/171190

Users that continue to subscribe to unsupported newsgroups may
experience poor computer performance and slow throughput speeds over a
period of time. Failure to unsubscribe may also interfere with the
functioning of the Verizon network or use of the network by other
Verizon users which is a violation of our Acceptable Use Policy.
]

If I want to access Newsgroups different from the ones you carry, what
are my options?

There are several commercial news providers that you can consider.
You may want to check out some options at
http://www.usenettools.net/ISP.htm. The content available, posting
policies, terms and prices will vary, so you should select the one
that is right for you. If you elect to access a non-Verizon newsgroup
over the Verizon Network, our terms of service and acceptable use
policy will still apply to your use of our Service.

Will this change to the newsgroup service affect my Internet service?

No. This change will NOT affect your ability to use the Internet or
other commercial newsgroup services. The change only affects the
number of newsgroups accessible through Verizon’s newsgroup
service.IMPORTANT: CHANGE IN VERIZON NEWSGROUP SERVICE

Where, exactly, is this on VZ's website?

also, how can being subscribed to a ng they don't support mess up their
servers???

They certainly didn't notify customers in any obvious way about the
change -- which I learned about here in one of those evil "alt" groups!

I guess I'll just have to stick to misc. It's too much trouble just now to
do a whole new setup.
<grump>
I'll miss some of you guys!

I wondered that too. They mentioned some changes a while back but I don't
remember seeing that specifically. I too am likely not to come here any
more if I can't get it through them.

bj,

I have not seen your message here yet, but my husband showed me your
question on his giganews which is in the process of getting set up and
then will set me up.

He did not find it on the verizon website. He found it posted in
another group. The actual announcement that I found can be found at

0.verizon.announce (that is zero.verizon.announce not OH)

Missed this the first go round
I answered it on Julies "ping" and in the first thread -- I didn't see
this post until after that of course <sigh>
I hope you find a way back here because I will miss seeing you if you

It takes about 3 minutes to set up an entire new account for news through
OE. I switched to individual news - a measly $15 per year (US $$$).
Subscribing to that and paying plus setting up the account wouldn't have
taken me more than 10 minutes max.

Well, I have spent several hours trying to get a new news server and nothing
is working. Always the same message. Server cannot be found. And I know I
have the settings right.

I am not about to pay any more money for one. Not even $15 a year. It's
not worth it to me. I used to read an post to quite a few news groups. I
don't any more. Now there are very few and of those, very few posts. So no
point to me in paying for something like that.

Doesn't giganews cost money? Looked to me like it was free for only three
months.

y'all do know that the current version of Agent allows you to access
as many news servers as you want, at the same time.

Hell no! I tried that once on my parent's computer. I think they were on
*shudder* AOL at the time. I think I'd sooner have bamboo shoots under my
fingernails than do that again! There is nothing *easy* about Google
Groups.

Never had a problem with it.

I'm using it now.

For any other Verizon customers about to lose newsgroups...try it
rather than going without ASD.

Moreover, though Verizon believes it can censor what folks post
through Google Groups under the guise of its AUP, it is far from the
truth just as Bellsouth once held a similar false belief until they
were swallowed up by at&t in an inauspicious take-over where more than
10,000 Bellsouth employees lost their jobs.

Such will be the demise of all who do not know and love the truth.

"I am the way and the truth and the life." -- LORD Jesus Christ.

Amen.

You'll both be missed if you stop posting here.. It goes to show that
when people stop posting it may well be nothing personal health wise.

Best wishes to both of you in finding a solution.
Perhaps the one found for Vivienne would work for you.

Best wishes,

I wasn't saying that it was free. I was saying that I saw the post on
giganews before it showed up on Verizon. giganews is what my husband
has decided to switch to.

Could be just coincidence, but Usenet access was VERY slow
last night (I'm on Verizon). Took me less than thirty seconds
to copy my Thunderbird configuration and change the servers
from Verizon to aioe

Me too. Took a little longer for me to configure each NG just the way I
want it.

Some people just don't want to deal with anything else.
I'm used to OE, & maybe I'm just a silly wimp but I don't want to change yet
another daily-coping-aspect of my life & get used to a whole new bunch of
how-to-do-it. Not just now, anyway. And it's not the money, it's the
nuisance.

Yes, I can (have) set up through aioe, but that's yet another thing to keep
track of. And they don't have the retention that VZ has (had) -- not a
problem for anything you've been following, but a downside if you go into
anything new.

It's no fun being told, when you don't like a food or a s/w program or a
provider or whatever, "just do it differently/cook it right/try the "better"
one" etc. IOW *change* what is known & comfortable & *works for you*.

I'm in 100% agreement with you. I like OE, and I like the 4.72 version
for the newsreader. I'm not interested in a bunch of bells and
whistles...so they can just leave me be. LOL

I know what you mean. I did get aioe and have no problems with it yet, but
I tend to look at the group at least daily if not several times a day. So I
don't know how long they retain the posts.

Setting up a new newsgroup server in OE takes about 2 minutes maximum.
