| | | OT: biopsy tomorrow Wish me luck, folks. I go for my prostate biopsy tomorrow. The doc
says there's a low chance of anything nasty, but since he wants to do
it, I guess there's still a chance. I'm really nervous, but I guess it
can't be any worse than a heart catheterization.
I'm just so damn tired of all this stuff happening in so short a
period of time. This really hasn't been a very good year.

Hey, John. Hope it turns out well. Sounds like you've got a good doctor.
You're still alive. Been a good year so far, I'd say!

Good luck, John. I know it's scary, but the doc is probably right
about the probable outcome.

I had it done about 6 years ago. Mine came back normal. The worst part was
the humiliation of having the ultrasound and finger stuck up my butt. I had
a transrectal biopsy. I felt the pressure of the apparatus in my butt and a
sharp pain when they did the actual biopsies, they did 3 on me.
I played poker and drank beer the evening after my biopsy. A friend had a
transurethral biopsy. He was ok until the he had to pee, then he almost
ripped the urinal pipe off the wall. If you have any choice, get the
transrectal. |

Thanks for that. Poker and beer (low carb of course) are two of my
favorite things.
The humiliation part doesn't worry me. I was in the hospital for 6
days last year and had all sorts of humiliating things done to me. I'm
immune now.
May I ask what prompted your biopsy? High PSA or DRE?

John C.
------------------------------------------------------------
I had had 2 bouts of prostatitis in 18 months. Both times the PSA was
negative and they were relieved by antibiotics. I had another attack of
prostatitis with a high PSA so the doctor wanted to do the biopsy. After the
biopsy was normal, I was treated with antibiotics for 4 or 5 months. I've
had no symptoms since.
I still worry about it and drink a lot of water, which is supposed to help
prevent prostatitis. |

Hi John,
I imagine your doctor is feeling pretty confident of the outcome otherwise

Since your doctor says, "Slight chance," you'll feel much better having it
confirmed that you don't have it, rather than always wondering and worrying.

As do I.
Whenever my Diabetician senses anything askew, he sends me off for tests
and visits to specialists. I appreciate that. I'd rather know now, than
discover too late that there was a problem.

through than I thought it would be. I feel fine. The doc said the ultrasound
looked great and I'll have the biopsy results in about a week.
After I was wheeled out of the procedure room, there was a very young (about
30) guy waiting to go next. He looked terrified, so I looked him in the eye,
gave him a big smile and told him it was a breeze. I hope it helped.

Glad the procedure was much easier than you expected and all the results
thus far look good. So what's on tap for later...poker and beer? ;-)

Oh, Nicky...he was so young and looked so scared. The nurse told me he was a
friend of her sister's and had a strong family history of PCa. That's the
biggest indicator of prostate problems...although PCa is extremely rare in
men under 35. I'm sure he's home now, probably worrying about the results,
but thinking "hey!, that crazy old dude was right...it didn't hurt a bit.
Hmmmph, old dude at 46....the little brat.

On my last birthday my boss asked me how it felt to be another year
older. I looked him in the eye and said, well, My docs told me when I
was a kid that I would be completely blind by the time I was 30,
didn't happen, that I would have at least one if not more heart
attacks between the age of 25 to 40, didn't happen, one doc told me I
should expect to lose at least one foot by the age of 30. It seems
that every time someone in the medical field predicts doom and gloom,
I always prove them wrong.
It dawned on me I have the same attitude towards life and medicos
predicting the end of that my grandparents had and they both lived to
be over a hundred years old. It's very simple, today is too busy for
me to waste time on dying, I'll do that tomorrow. Yesterday is gone,
today is now, and tomorrow never comes.
And if you can't outlive the bastards with a positive attitude, do it
out of spite so you can have the final say.

Hey Michelle! I'd like to think so. You know, I've been thinking about
becoming a volunteer at our local hospital to visit and talk with heart
attack patients, especially younger ones. I know I would've benefitted from
that, but luckily I have my uncle....he had an MI in his 50s.
I mentioned the lack of emotional support groups at the hospital to my
cardiologist, who happens to be one of the sweetest, kindest men I've ever
met and he said to me "John, why don't you start one". I've been giving this
a lot of thought lately. I'm sure, especially with younger guys, that they
think life's basically over. I thought that way myself for awhile. But now,
with a lot of help from you guys, my DM is under control and even though I
slacked off a bit on the exercise over the winter, I can still do a hard 5
miles without breaking a sweat. Maybe sharing that experience with someone
scared and worried will help.

Man, I wish. Poker's cancelled this Friday night. I think I'll take the
wifey and kid out to eat tonight. Not only that, I think I might get a nice
steak.

I've saved this post and intend to read it from time to time. Yours is the
attitude that I strive for and hope to one day fully attain.
My grandmother, who's 95 has that attitude. She was Dx'd DM in her late
80's, had breast cancer also in her 80s, is sharp as a tack and still works
3 days a week as a volunteer at a hospital. Her secret is that she doesn't
worry.

Thanks Larry. The positive thoughts from this group must work. It really was
virtually painless.
As a matter of fact, when the dude was doing the ultrasound, I said "Hey,
this isn't so bad...you doing anything Friday night"? Made the nurse giggle.
I really like giggly nurses.

There's a number of newsgroups with .support. in the middle of their
names. You might want to make a list of the ones that are suitable
to suggest to people at such a support group for the benefit of those
who know how to use newsgroups or are willing to learn.
I've also found a few support websites some of them may want: http://tudiabetes.com/ http://www.childrenwithdiabetes.com/ http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/diabetesworld/ http://www.strokeb | | |
