G'day G'day Julie,

Thank you for your best wishes.

We were several hundred kilometres from the epicenter so didn't suffer
any structural damage. Our house is built to a very strict building
code. It floats on a concrete pad with a steel band that goes right
around it. This ensures the whole house floats like boat. Imagine if
you will a launch in a mooring when a large boat passes. It sways
back and forth a bit but nothing else happens. Nothing even fell off
the shelves.

My experience may not be representative of other New Zealanders.

Best wishes,

Glad to hear you are okay. I hope New Zealanders closer to the
epicenter also fared as well.

G'day G'day Michelle,

There was a lot of structural damage to houses and shops in Gisborne
close to the epicenter. An old lady died of heart attack, something
which of course might have happened without the earthquake. This is
the only fatality that I've heard of.

Best wishes,

It certainly was.
None of my friends living locally report any damage or injuries.

I guess many of you will have seen the Gisborne, a city close to the
epicenter on television. That took a thumping. Fortunately we
didn't. Here is was more a topic for discussion.

I thought one was meant to stand in doorways. Apparently this advice
is no longer considered correct. One is supposed to stand lie near a
wall to form a "triangle of life." Something I need to look up on
the net.

My daughter in law says "Well we aren't likely to get a big one now
since a lot of energy has been taken out of the fault line."

Wish I could be so confident. Sometimes when a fault line unzips at
one point another bit further along unzips soon after. It is
something one can't predict. The one thing we can be sure of is our
houses are built to strict earthquake codes and are likely to do
better than those in countries that don't have such codes enforced.

Best wishes,

Hi Quentin,

Caught up with my newspaper reading and saw that Gisborne was not as
fortunate as your area.

G'day G'day Frank,

We do our best.

Some part of the New Zealand spirit is captured in a TV beer
commercial of all things that shows them saying "No".

A prominent New Zealander, Rutherford split the atom and yet New
Zealand has said "No" to nuclear power generation. (Instead we have
wind farms, hydro and geothermal generation ... don't look too hard
though, some of it is from coal fired steam generators.)

We have said "No" to genetic engineering. None of these are perfect
solutions. Perhaps we would be better off with nuclear power
generation. Perhaps we would be better off if we had food from
genetically modified plants. These matters are vigorously debated
here and the future of political parties sometimes hangs in the
balance reading the publics view on such matters. Whatever.

So far we appear to be buying time to learn what is best.

Oh, and there is the New Zealand spirit of recovering from disaster.
We sure as heck need it in the sport arena.

Where I live is famous for the earthquake in the nineteen thirties
that leveled the city of Napier. At the time there were only 16,000
inhabitants. They set about rebuilding and formed a 30,000 club with
the intention of doubling the population. They are the ones who
captured the spirit they saw in Art Deco, Spanish mission and some
Malayan architecture. Take a look around on the internet and see
sunbursts and other symbols of life bursting forth bountifully.
Women bathed in the sea and public swimming pools in what were
regarded at the time as risque fashions.

They took to the big screen images portrayed by Hollywood.
Some foolishness got included in the reckless spirits. Women imitating
the Hollywood heroines smoked and drank martinis. Now elegance takes
new forms eg being very knowledgeable about wines. Smoking is going
out of fashion, thankfully.

In short, we do rock.

So I might add do ordinary folk in other countries. Too often we
don't get to see these folks and what is best in them. It doesn't
make television that gets high ratings compared with celebrities who
do stupid things, chefs that swear, or the endless survivor series.

I know many remarkable people exist in other countries.

I'm privileged that a few of them write to me and I'm able to get a
more balanced view of what is going on than what is portrayed on TV or
the newspapers.

Best wishes,

G'day G'day Michelle,

They certainly were badly affected. New Zealand is geologically a
young country on the edge of tectonic plates one moving South, the
other Westerly. They graunch and grind a bit.

There is a valuable lesson in that observation. Television inevitably
shows the worst affected and gives an unbalanced perspective. For us
it was more a matter of staying calm.

The only damage we've sustained is something with the microphone gain
for Skype. The sound while present is no longer loud enough to ensure
a stable connection. Sorry to those who have tried to contact me on
Skype. Yes, I'm OK and can even chat (type) on Skype but have to wait
till I clever nerd can spare me some time to take a look at it before
I'll have any voice to go with it.

Best wishes,
