| | | OT PING: Nicky -- Warning! Shameless Bragging Follows! Knew you'd appreciate this. We went to a tournament a couple of
weekends ago and The Kid took -- 1st place in forms, 1st place in
weapons and 1st place in sparring against higher ranked guys! I'm not
sure if it's appropriate that, so far, my son's greatest achievement
is being able to kick people in the head, but I'll take what I can
get. :-D
It was a long day (400 mile round trip in 14 hours), but the ride home
was sure nice. ;-)
Since it's such a PITA to follow the group now, I'm not keeping up as
I'd like to. How are you guys doing there? Fabulous, last I read! |

EXCELLENT! Kudos to the Kid
Besides, it's kicking people in the head with style, and control : )
How are you doing in that line? We're due another grading, we'll be
green next. We now have to do two forms - only one more easy one, then
they get very esoteric :P We don't have to spar for gradings, yet -
that's a couple of belts away, it's just forms and basics at the
moment. We have a new baby sensei just now, who was a junior English
champion for forms - he's amazing to watch, and we're learning tons
from him. The top sensei teaches good sneaky sparring tricks, so
between him and the baby, we're getting good coverage. I took out a
purple belt last weekend, to our mutual amazement : )
Diabetes is doing OK too... MOT beginning of next month. I went
clothes-shopping today, have lost another dress size, I literally had
only one decent thing to wear on a 2-day business trip! Need to spend
some serious money. Dreadful job, but someone has to do it :P
You all take care,
Nicky.

Congrats to The Kid. Remind me not to upset him if we ever
meet.
PITA? Killfiles and anti-ABC techniques work marvelously for

Thanks, Alan. Fortunately, he's a pretty "cool kid" and it takes a
lot more to get him worked up than it does me. Maybe I should have

*And* they asked for it. :-D

I've taken a break. I don't know if I mentioned that I hyper-extended
my knee (is that the word I'm looking for?) just before my first
testing. Almost a year later, it still wasn't "right." I've been on
haitus for the past few months and now I can actually walk up and down
stairs! I'll probably start back up again after the World
Championships in June. I really do miss the work, but I sure don't
miss the constant pain. :-)

Woo hoo!!! WTG! I love to hear about you doing stuff like that!

I'm struggling, but not discouraged. My fasting was 174 this morning
and I have no clue why -- it shouldn't have been that high. It's
quite irritating. I guess it's time for meds, but you already know
how I feel about that. ;-) I'm sending in my Stanford Study sample
for my A1c today, so I'll have that in a few weeks.

Good for you! That's a good problem to have! Of course, for a 2-day
trip you need at least four good outfits "just in case!" Well, that's
my story and I'm stickin' to it. <hehehe> |

Oh, wow, OW! Yes, I do remember you hurting it - isn't it amazing how
long some things can take to heal! And you sure don't want to rush
something like that.

Hope you're not coming down with anything - although it WOULD give a
reason for the high! The range of possible meds is getting quite
impressive - I guess at least you can try for a med targeted at your
specific problem, assuming you can find an endo who's up on them all. Insulin might be worth thinking about too, maybe? Better meds of some
description, than the complications. That Stanford study is way cool,
giving you the long-term view.

It's great to read about parents and children sharing a commitment to
achieve a worthwhile goal. So often modern hobbies mean families are
fragmented in what they do. Good on you. Your kids must appreciate
you and that is all to the good when it comes to learning family
values.

Hi, Nicky --
No, I'm in the control group. I'm the one that makes everyone else
look good. :-D
That's okay, though. I get my A1c every six months for free, and a
couple of times they did cholesterol, too. So that, alone, is worth
the few minutes a year to fill out the questionnaires. It is a
two-year study, so it should be finishing up here pretty soon. |

Hi, Alan --
Everything's been fine til the last few weeks. My fastings are
ridiculous and I can't get under 150 during the day to save my neck.
The thing that's really odd is that I've just lost another 25 pounds
or so in the past couple of months -- so from previous experience I'd
expect things to get better, not worse.
I know you'll ask, so here you go:
Fasting: 212
First thing: Coffee, cream, Splenda (I just can't face "real" food
first thing in the morning.)
An hour or two later is Breakfast: Scrambled eggs with sauteed onion,
green pepper, ham, and a slice of cheese (Pre 178, 1hr 193, 2hr 164)
Lunch: Salad with leafy greens, tomatoes, avocados, green onions,
cheese, and some kind of protein -- ham, chicken or tuna. (Pre 197,
1hr 209, 2hr 152)
Dinner: Always steamed broccoli -- I love steamed broccoli. And a
salad. And then roast chicken or a hamburger patty. (Pre 165, 1hr
189, 2hr 176)
Snacks are nuts, cheese, leftover meat, or sugar free jello.
When the fasting started going up, I made sure I had some cheese just
before I went to bed. When it kept going up, I did nuts. Now, I
don't know what to do. I was hoping there was something wrong with my
meter, but I feel so exhausted all the time, I'm pretty sure the
numbers are right. |

When I read the comment about feeling like a taxi driver I felt quite
moved. It's sad that you could get to feel that way. Glad you've had
a change of heart. Here's hoping that your kids will realise what a
fabulous mum they have, When they grow up I'm sure they will support
their children in growing up with healthy in mind and body.

I presume you've seen an endo. To this layperson looking in
it is obviously NOT the diet.
To me that leaves the logical conclusion that something has
changed (Einstein logic needed to work that out:-). Beyond
that it's pure speculation but I'm thinking T1, LADA or
MODY.
Some may suggest adding some carbs in; worth a try but I
doubt that it's the solution. For a liver dump that's just
going on too long.
Best wishes. I know when to stop making lay suggestions and
pass it on to the endos and qualified diagnosticians.

There's no endo in my future. :-)

Yeah, something's definitely changed. :-D
This is pretty much what I've been eating all along with super results
in the past, so there's a little gremlin working in there somewhere.

Actually, I did try that. It only made things worse, which is what I
thought would happen, but i figured I should try it anyway. At least
*that* was predictable.

Thanks, Quentin -- That was really tongue in cheek and I don't want
you to get the wrong idea. With this Kid, I truly grabbed the brass
ring. Even though his hair's too long and his room could be certified
as a disaster area, I consider myself lucky that, at almost 16, he's
not yet embarrassed to be seen with me out in public. And I still get
lots of hugs -- even when other people might be looking! LOL!
When I talk to other people who are ready to throw their kids out of
the house -- suitcase optional! -- I know I'm really, really lucky.

Do you have access to a reasonable PCP? Otherwise, you're going to
have to make some potentially scary decisions yourself.

I'm on my own on this one. Up til recently, the information from this
group and my meter have kept things in good control for something like
three or four years. I've been wracking my brain trying to think of
what could be going on, and I'm remembering that there have been some
strange things the past six months that made me think, "Gee, that's
odd." And I thought about posting to the group, but decided not to,
because they seemed so silly.
I'm sure I'll be able to figure out what's up -- it'll just take some
time. :-) |

That is a serious disadvantage, I can only agree with Alan that
something has changed and we don't know what it is - but some kind of
specialist might. <sigh>

Persistent infection or hormones are two possibilities but unlikely
I'd have thought. Thyroid? Any changes to your lipids or blood
pressure? |

Thanks, Nicky -- I appreciate that. Just wanted to throw in that
fasting was 161 this morning, a *big* improvement over the past few
days. So, hopefully, whatever "it" was, it's going away. :-)
Thanks for the help and good wishes. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
