Default OT: A weekend to help anyone recoupe

After all we went through with Ashton's birth, my being in the hospital at
the time, his being flowwwwwn away in the big plane, and my finally getting
to see him, it was with tremendous joy that he came to spend last Friday
night with me, not going home until about noon Saturday (treating me with
royalty in the meantime). Ashley and Ashton came over around noon; we went
to Wal-Mart for odds 'n ends late afternoon, then went to eat Chinese
(across the interstate from WM) after we'd spent all the money Jim had....
ha ha ;-). They took me home to make room for Ashton's bassinet. Then
comes my big boy (he's over 10 lbs now). Ashley fixes everything beside my
bed, including his bathtub, and he takes a nice warm bath here, which he
doesn't care for nearly as much as I would. *s* Oh, does he smell all
sweet, and feel so soft when mommy finishes with him, and hands him to me.
Hey! There is something to this great-grandmother stuff, and being confined
(but there is give 'n take on both sides . She took some pix of him and
me just talking away, and I'll get them uploaded when I remember how to do
it again.

Those two went home about noon; I got to feed him his bottle just before
they left. A sweet farewell, and looking forward to the next visit whether
here or at their house (yeah, I'm feeling that good I think , or maybe a
walk around the block or so before it gets too cold for me. *s*

I bet I was asleep before they even got to their house, one block away, and
oh, did I ever sleep. Didn't lose any sleep over Ashton, he was really
good. It was just the activity, and it was an MG restorative sleep. Jim
didn't wake me - thank goodness!! LOL

So. That was my weekend to top all weekends!
(Jennifer called while they were here, so I felt connected to all my great
children, and only had one grand who wasn't around.)

Jan, I love these babies, and have been a little concerned how I would be
when he arrived, how I'd be able to handle him with the reduced muscle
strength in my arms, and the sudden weakness overall. It has worked out
fine up on my bed, and my feeling of confidence beneath, and surrounding me
helps me hold, feed, etc., him. And Ashley makes sure that it is okay for
me to call it quits any time I begin to weaken and tire. When she was
putting on her iPod, she let me know she couldn't hear me well, and told me
how to get her attention if I needed her, and not to feel like I had to keep
on keeping on holding/feeding him. She really put me at ease with him. Not
necessarily an easy thing for a new mom to do.

I think you and I must have been made from the same cloth when it comes to
these babies...... ;-) They stopped me from having them because of my
health (endocarditis and rheumatoid arthritis).

Awwwwww......... I really did Kate. After he went to sleep, it was soooo
quiet, and Ashley and I were busy at our laptops enjoying the stillness. He
woke again before either of us fell asleep. Ate, then went back to sleep.
A really good baby.

my baby was sick and collicy for the first 3 months

then he started to have blood movements rather than bowel movements

that got us a room to ourselves thru emergency (after waiting for 14 hours)
(that taught me to take my insulin... both types........ to the children's
hospital)

they did a colonoscopy on him.......... he had borderline ulcerative
colitis...... the bowel of a 40 yr old steak eating/beer drinking/smoking
male......... and there was no reason for it

so, they tried every formula they had..........until they were down to 'one
last try' and that one worked........ expensive stuff though

at 1 yr old, i was told he could go onto milk, and he did so without any
troubles

the ped Dr tells me 'it's a miracle' because she had NO idea what caused it,
and we were lucky to have fixed it

Great to hear you feeling so strong, Billie, and enjoying your new
baby How's Ashley doing, and wave at Jim for us, huh?

Oh, thank you Wendy. When I was not responding typically to the treatments,
I was concerned how much I was going to be able to hold him, but things are
working out just fine. Plus, Ashley is helping the process, too, and that
is sweet of her. However, there is quite a story to be told there, which I
plan to do. We have already started it with the Bowl of Love, but have had
to lay off of it these past couple of years.

Nicky, I am so afraid to allow myself to rejoice over feeling better after
this treatment. Do you know what I mean? Does it make any sense? It is
with the temporary-ness of this disease. I wanna do all there is to do
knowing reality. That is what I need you all for, to push the
positive reinforcement when I do not "feel" it as strongly.

Christen, the 12 y/o granddaughter is here, and when I gave Jim his message,
she said to tell the lady she left her out! Jim told her she'd never talked
to you, so she said a big "Hi" to you so she could get one back. Not much
shy about my kids here. Yep, she'd do it in person as well, this one would.
She was home from school this afternoon (with us) with a nasty head and
chest cold, lots of coughing. I've been in my bed, she's been on the couch,
and Jim's been in 1 1/2 chair, and a cold front has been moving in bringing
rain and cooler weather. Nice afternoon.

Jim waved back at ya, and I'm afraid he could get a pretty big head with too
much recognition, so be careful. A medium size wave ought to be plenty
for him, especially today, he's been rather ornery, and was so just as he
was walking out the door, and I gave him your wave (think maybe I waved too
big for you)

My goodness, Kate, the things the little ones must go through to survive
sometimes. It surely makes you appreciate them doesn't it. All three of
mine had to have their ureters reimplanted because of an abnormality I
passed down to them; a very painful operation. Thankfully, it is something
like childbirth, in that you forget most of it. At least the younger you
are it seemed that way. Glad you all made it through that ordeal.

it to your Grandma, please : )

Aw - he was nice to have around when you had that extra-bad hospital
stay a couple of times ago. He can have a good-sized wave : )

Take care,

Kate, that is some story about the kidlet. At least it had a happy
ending for both of you. The stress must have been overwhelming.

I beat you on the colic. My daughter had it until she was seven months
old and could sit up by herself and expel the gas. It was god awful.

LOL

he had colic right thru his first year

i had him on my shoulder, holding his feet, rocking him back and forth to
keep him from screaming

every so often (like when i cooked dinner) i would put him in the swing, and
let him swing until dinner was cooked, and i had my meal

he did go onto 'regular' foods when he was 6 months old...... starting with
pumpkin from the tin..... and meat that i processed in a food processor with
lots of 'au jus' with it to make it easy for him to swallow

he still doesn't like meat he has to chew

sigh........ blew that one

Yeah - Eldest Daughter cried for 4 months solid except when in motion
- god knows how she/we survived, or why we had #2!

Good on the kidlet, Kate Is he taller than you yet? I'm looking
for a new term there for mine : )

no, kidlet is typical for our family....... short for his age (well, rather,
average according to the charts)

i grew 6 inches after i graduated from high school........... up to 5'6"
my brothers are 6'4" and they grew after they graduated from high school as
well

:-)

i've been told i should be calling him teenlet now!

LOL

Nicky, with the attachment disorder, it is quite an accomplishment for
Ashley to trust anyone, and THAT makes me so happy after all the work she
and I did. That is the root of their problem(s). She, Jim, and I can talk
about all of these things openly, and it makes it easier for us to help her
address her issues. She was given the tools to address the problems, and
she is doing a good job of addressing most of them. The major one I worry
about is impulsiveness.

We went to a town in Tennessee to eat this evening after I got my hair
washed, and it was located in a small mall, which Ashley and I just needed
to check it out (are you seeing a pattern of our being deprived?)..... well,
she needed some jeans and a jacket really badly, and they had some small,
inexpensive stores in it, one of which is her favorite jean store. It was
quiet in there, and Jim took Ashton in the stroller while she and I looked.
We found some neat jewelry for $5 - $15 - me some cute Santa clip-on
earrings..... we're going back later, when we have more time. Saw some
things for Jennifer for Christmas in dolphins, which I'll go back and get
for her. If someone else does not buy something frivolous for her, she does
not get it, because she has so many expenses with Matthew. He is still in
diapers, and will be so indefinitely; quite an expense (she's trying for
disability), and she is pregnant again, accidently while on birth control
(with all three - can some have a problem with bc?). Another expense is
that they require a certain kind of clothing to ease in using the bathroom,
and I do not know if they intend on trying potty training or not, but Jen
had already bought school clothing, and had to go back and buy the different
kind. Hard on a one income budget with a disabled child with all the extra
doctors, diapers, etc. Sure hope the disability is approved for him, and
soon. Good luck seems to be by-passing them all around except in the
sweetest great-grandkids around (don't tell Cheri, she thinks hers are.....
they are second, though.... love you Cheri

Thanks a lot Nicky

Billie, what is the nature of Matthew's disability? I know things are
different here but certain disabilities are automatically granted disability
payments, others have to have eligibility determined by a board after being
presented with all medical facts. Also, have free diapers been looked into?
I was getting Jasmine's through one agency for annual co-pay of $100, now
the Dept of Aging has extended their free continence stuff to kids under 16
for the first time. No co-pay but probably only about 6 months worth. Still
will have to use the other agency as well. I am constantly finding out more
and more things she is entitled to.

Nope - have just tried that - got the worst glare she can manage at
this hour of the morning : ) She suggests "Towering Teenage Terror" -
T3 actually works, for me

Jan, I lost my place here and had a hard time finding you. ;-) and lost
your new address you sent to me when my other computer took a big drink. I
still do not have my Microsoft Mail working right yet. My 12 y/o was here
last night, and stole my computer to do her Christmas shopping online. My
how Christmas shopping has changed! I got a picture of her, but it has not
come through to my computer yet. When she would finish, she'd just print
out her wish list for the store on my printer at the foot of my bed. Now, I
have a stack of print-outs of her shopping exhibition. We had fun.

Matthew. They are back to trying to determine his dx. They started with
autism. Then it was Fragile X, and he even had outward manifestations. I
researched it after he was dx-ed, and it seemed so sure. Then, they said
no, we don't know what it is. This was the geneticist that said no. I do
not still have the links on here, but let me see if I can find the ear
thing....
http://www.nfxf.org/html/what.htm Not a link I had before but looks
informative (my ptosis is bad tonight and I cannot see very well, so taking
whatever I can find)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fragile_X

Well, I've spent that time telling you what it supposedly is not, at least
that gives you an impression of what he is like. Jen has her application
for disability in, and that is with the autism only dx. Now that they know
more is going on, surely they will approve it. Denial is common here.
:-( We sometimes have to apply several times. I think Jen's about ready to
pull her hair out. Here, in AR, we have a relative, same age as Kaitlyn,
and he has cystic fibrosis, and he just got approved because someone knew
someone else and sent them there. It STINKS!! We are so glad he got on it,
but had they not run into this person, he still would not be on it
today..... Cystic Fibrosis, and they could get not help! These young
couples do not make that much money. If it takes two to work, then who is
at home to care for the children? Who pays for sitters? Who pays for
therapists? Who pays for doctors? I'm ready to climb on my stump!!!!!
Ready, ready, ready, I tell you! Ashley' attachment disorder kids were
neglected and I was ready to start something here, then MG fell me.
Jennifer would love to have the diapers. I would guess that Kaitlyn will be
potty trained by the time the new baby comes, but if she is not, then she
will have three in diapers, and what size would Matthew's be? He will be 5
then (well, almost in July). Jen said Kaitlyn really sticks with him. When
she's trained maybe it will help him. Reckon? Jan, my heart just bursts
for my babies up there, and I want to see them so, so very badly, and I want
to see Jen and give her some encouragement. Maybe it's what I need to spur
my MG remission/betterment onward - focus on these who have such a need when
I have so much love and comfort to give to them. There isn't much else I
can give except maybe some computer support (Jen has none) for making
contacts. I'm on fixed income, but I don't need my money for anything but
my girls, and their needs......hehehehe.... I bought two strollers in one
month, and now Jen's going to need a double stroller in May! Oh, boy, I
love life! Plus, Kaitlyn' s going to have to give up her baby bed, so she's
got to have a youth bed or something. Now, if we can just keep things calm
around here..... LOL It's going to be a shocker when Mammaw and Granddaddy
die. It is already different now with Ashton. Thank goodness Ashley is not
a "We've always done it this way," mommy, now breaking the mold. I'm proud
of me, being able to break away from tradition, and go with today's way. I
bet Ashton's not seen a sterilized anything come near to him! hahaha He's
doing just fine, too.

See what you think of this? 'Ready to get yours and go strolling? I'm
anxious for you and Loretta. We are using phone pix, sending them to our
computers, then sending web links. Makes it easier to share, and doesn't
clog Inboxes.

I don't know. I guess maybe I'd wear it if I had it, and if I were going
out, but since that is such a rarity, I even forget the few pieces of cheap
stuff I've bought recently. Sometimes, I even forget to comb my hair when I
go out...... I mean from bed to doctor's office..... big deal..... or to
stroll along a mall as I done recently. That's it for me.
