Julie, have you ever heard of Gastrocrom for food allergies? It's a
mast cell stabilizer that you take just before meals to prevent allergic
food reactions.

Very safe, very non toxic as a rule, unless you have an allergy to it.

Something to look up and discuss with your doc. Someone I know uses it.

Nope. I will look it up. Odd that it has never been mentioned at any of
the allergy NGs or forums. I wonder if it is only for certain foods? I am
trying to minimize the amount of meds I am taking though. I seem to have
bad side effects from most of them and I just don't need any more of that.
I just stopped taking my allergy med. It was making me so exhausted I had
gotten pretty much non-functional. Am feeling much better in that dept!

Thanks!

Okay... I just looked it up. Doesn't sound like something I would want to
try. The side effects are the very things I get from the food allergies.
SIDE EFFECTS: Nausea, gas, muscle aches, stomach pain or headache may occur.

It also has to be taken in a glass of water, 1/2 hot then cold mixed in.
Can not be taken with food or milk. And since milk is one of my allergies,
it wouldn't be of much use to me. Sounds like it might be useful for those
who might have anaphylaxis shock or something. Thanks anyway.

It's not for specific foods, Julie, it's for folks with mast cell over
activation. It stablizes the cells that produce allergic symptoms
without damaging them.

How about the H2 blocker notorious for slowed gastric emptying? Have
you stopped that? Could make a huge diff, too.

I don't think most people have any reaction to it, though. And it's
hard to discern whether those are related to the allergy or the med,
since both are occurring at the same time.

It is given to folks with anaphylaxis due to food allergies, but it
works against allergic reaction in everyone by stabilizing mast cells.

What's an H2 blocker? Do you mean the Prevacid? If so I have stopped that
and am now on Aciphex. I suppose that could be the culprit too. Don't
know. Also stopped the Zrytec because it was leaving me exhausted and
wiping out my memory and motvation to do anything.

That may be. But I am very sensitive to meds and if there is a side effect
to be had, chances are I will have it.

Maybe, but I think I'd sooner just avoid the known allergens.

Thanks!

I said H2 blocker, but then realized you may've been on a proton pump
inhibitor instead. Have you checked rxlist to see if Aciphex causes
gastroparesis?

I understand, but reactions to it are rare even among folks with
frequent anaphylaxis.

I looked it up and it doesn't seem to cause it. Plus fewer people seem to
get side effects from it.
