Default Possible medication reactions?

Does anyone have any information on whether or not you can take the
following meds all together safely?

Lyrica
Actos
One a Day Vitamin
Folic Acid
B1
ALA
Evening Primrose Oil

All prescribed by my doctor except the ALA and EPO which, not being
prescribed, are the ones I'm worried about maybe reacting. I seem to
be shoving a lot of stuff into my body. I'm a diabetic but not with
really high bg - too high but with diet, passable, so far.

Thanks
John

The first obvious question is what does your doctor say? Of course
there might be some subtle interactions which he's not aware of. So
the next question is whether you seem to be improving after adding the
EPO and ALA, and if so, whether you start getting worse again if you
stop.

Hi John

Have you gained any weight lately?

As Chris said, this is a matter to discuss with your doc.
However, there is a Drugs Interaction checker on the
Medscape site (registration is free and spam-free) at
http://www.medscape.com/druginfo/dru...hecker?cid=med
which provides information you might want to discuss with
the doc.

This is the printout for your list; the only interaction
noted is for the Lyrica and Actos.

Multi-Drug Interaction Checker

Patient Regimen

B100 BALANCED ORAL
ACTOS ORAL
MULTIVITAMIN ORAL
ALPHA LIPOIC ACID ORAL
EVENING PRIMROSE OIL ORAL
FOLIC ACID ORAL
LYRICA ORAL

Interactions

Moderate Interaction
PREGABALIN/THIAZOLIDINEDIANE ANTIDIABETICS
Lyrica Oral and Actos Oral may interact based on the
potential interaction between PREGABALIN and
THIAZOLIDINEDIANE ANTIDIABETICS.

Pregabalin/Thiazolidinedione Antidiabetics

This information is generalized and not intended as specific
medical advice. Consult your healthcare professional before
taking or discontinuing any drug or commencing any course of
treatment.

MONOGRAPH TITLE: Pregabalin/Thiazolidinedione Antidiabetics

SEVERITY LEVEL: 3-Moderate Interaction: Assess the risk to
the patient and take action as needed.

MECHANISM OF ACTION: Both pregabalin and thiazolidinedione
antidiabetics can cause weight gain and/or fluid
retention.(1)

CLINICAL EFFECTS: Since pregabalin and thiazolidinedione
antibiotics can cause weight gain and/or fluid retention,
the manufacturer recommends they care should be taken when
used together.(1)

PREDISPOSING FACTORS: Congestive heart failure.

PATIENT MANAGEMENT: Patients should be monitored for weight
gain and/or fluid retention when taking pregabalin with the
thiazolidinedione antidiabetics agents together. Congestive
heart failure or worsening of existing congestive heart
failure may occur.

DISCUSSION: The manufacturer recommends that pregabalin and
thiazolidinedione antidiabetics be administered together
with care.(1) The possible resulting fluid retention may
lead to congestive heart failure or exacerbation of existing
heart failure.

The second obvious question is what does your pharmacist say?

And do both all your doctors and your pharmacist know you are taking all
those drugs, whether prescription medicines, vitamins or supplements?

I would have your pharmacist check - that's one of the things they do best.

You might talk to your pharmacist. They are trained to know drug
interactions.

Many thanks for the checker url. No, I haven't gained weight- still 5'
11" - 165lbs, as I've been for many years. My doctor prescribed both
the Lyrica and the Actos so I didn't think anything of it but, lately,
I've started to wonder if doctors might fudge a little on the side
effect and interaction of meds just to get results. He, also,
recommended the folic acid and B1 so, again, I figured he knew what he
was talking about. The ALA and EPO I added myself. I haven't seen him
lately (can't afford the $125 Medicare co-pay for the new year for a
few more weeks - or so). I'm worried about the Actos and am going to
try to get him to replace it with something else next visit.

Thanks again
John

Haven't asked the pharmacist.... guess I'd better.
Doctor knows all but the ALA and EPO

Thanks
John
