| | | Progress! Results from my testing since diagnosed on April 10th Using a target range of 70 - 140 for my bG levels, below are my results
so far as calculated by the Accu-Check software.
April 10th - 17th (04/10/2007 - day I was released from the hospital)
83.3% above target
16.7% within target
April 18th - 24th
38.1% above target
61.9% within target
April 25th - May 1st
26.5% above target
70.6% within target
2.9% below target
May 2nd - May 4th
23.1% above target
76.9% within target
Overall my average bG for the past 2 weeks is 128.9. And yes, this
includes every test I have done with this meter (the only one I have). I
been testing about 6x a day the past few days vs the originally
recommended 4x a day.
I think a great improvement from just 3 weeks ago!

I have only had one sub 80 reading and that was a 67. As I recall that
was most likely due to me not eating my recommended amount of carbs for
the previous meal and being very active that afternoon before this low
reading.

I have actually had more symptoms with a higher bG level than I did that
time. A few times the tops of my upper thighs have felt a little tingly
and it turned out my bG was around 100 (this we in the first 2 weeks
after getting out of the hospital). Since then I really haven't felt
that sensation.
Hopefully my body will get use to lower bG levels as time goes on so it
will feel right to be in the normal range.
While the nutritionist may object, It has been very difficult for me to
eat as many carbs as she wants me to (unless I just eat pasta or bread),
so I expect I will be eating fewer carbs than the 270 grams per day she
is recommending. That should help keep my levels down.
However, even though I will be eating fewer carbs, I will continue to
eat a bit every few hours as that seems to be a good thing in keeping my
levels more constant.
Coupled with higher activity levels (which I had started doing even
before the diagnosis) I think will help me a great deal.
Thanks!

Dale, you're doing fantastic!!! Keep on doing what your doctor and
nutritionist
are telling you to do.. 270gm is proably what YOU need to keep your energy
levels up. I'm sure your meals were tailor made for you from the
nutritionist.

She didn't give me any meals per se, (no food recommendations), just
said I should have 3 meals a day with 30 grams of protein and 60 of
carbs, with 3 snacks per day (the last one being right before bed) of 30
grams carbs and 15 grams of protein.
I have been much more active than previously, had a bG of 87 today after
finishing working in the yard - 2 hours after a late lunch.
I have discovered that the Kashi frozen dinners kick my bG up high (ok,
high compared to what I am currently shooting for) had a bG of 160 1
hour after eating. The meal was 55 gr carbs, and 6 grams of fiber for a
net carb count of 49 - I didn't eat any other carbs as I was purposfully
checking to see what this would do to my levels.
I have also noticed that the kashi cereal also makes me go sky high, so
I am reducing the serving size of the cereal quite a bit to avoid the
spike it causes.

I should clarify, it is the overall quantity of food that I am having
difficulty eating. It often surprises people that a guy my size really
doesn't eat all that much (at least in the past, I am already eating 2x
the amount of food I used to eat).
I am trying very hard to stay away from the 'white' carbs, as I learn
what I can eat without causing a spike.
Since I skipped so many meals in the past, it has been somewhat
difficult to switch to 3x meals a day and the 3 snacks - the before bed
snack is an easy one to remember
As mentioned by some others in the group, I am going to move toward more
of a constant grazing type eating with smaller "meals" instead of having
the larger meals and snacks. Once I get to that schedule I think it will
be better for me personally.

Isn't it Dale who's the weightlifter into low carbing? If I've got the
right guy, it's no wonder he's having problems eating that shed-load
of carbs - might be Krom, though...
Dale, just fyi, I eat between 50-70g carbs daily, and have a distinct
and common carb tolerance profile - very little at breakfast, sloping
up to about 40g at the evening meal. Some people have the opposite
slope, you need to test to see what yours looks like. I also
weightlift 3x weekly, do karate 2x weekly, and a 3-mile walk most days
- plus keep up with my teenagers : ) The 270g is mostly to feed the insulin...

comfortable with
personally, i was given a HUGE carbohydrate
'requirement' from my nutritionist, but all i'm
able to eat in a day is about 100 grams of carbs
i do eat a LOT of the free veggies that are full
of nutrients, vitamins and minerals for us (ergo
we should eat a lot of them)
but i do NOT need a lot of the carbs that only
raise my bg levels too high

Hello Dale:
I have read the usual arguments that your recommendations usually bring.
I was told the very same thing when I first came to the group.
my doctor is nuts, hope the ADA pays for my funeral, buy these books.
I kept with my doctors advice and found that in just a couple of weeks
I had to eat very big meals to get the same blood sugar levels that smaller
meals
were giving me. How? mostly i give credit to the exercise and increased
activity.
i say if you truely are going to exercise then listen to your doctor about
exercise
and a dietitian about nutrition because they do go hand in hand for your
health.
if your not going to listen to your doctor about exercise then you shouldnt
be eating
the foods that they recommend. because that food was designed for someone
that is doing exercise.
as far as eating more now then before I think thats true for most newly
diagnosed type 2's.
cut out the fats and the simple carbs that leaves plenty of room for low
carb veggies.
i dont believe in getting in the way of a doctor treating a newbie but if i
was asked for advice i would
say for starters.
exercise,
choose high fiber complex carbs
eat lots of low carb veggies
grill meats and saute with onions in an omege 3 oil.
if you dont trust a doctor find another, if no doctor agrees with what you
are reading on the
internet - who are you going to believe.
at the same time not knowing anything about you I can honestly say that I am
not against low carb.
but feels its more important for you to be working with a team of
professionals that get to examine you, see your facial expressions and will
know you a lot better than anyone reading any amount of posts you make.
i feel groups like this should be used to offer support when you are feeling
down and not so much about treating diabetics.
yes you are probably confused just as i was when I first posted about my
high carb recommendations but in 6 months i was off all medications and had
A1C in the 5 % club for over 4 years. I am glad I worked with my doctor and
dietitian regardless of what internet diabetics say. I am glad I grilled my
meats and replaced the fat with healthy fats ( according to leading health
organizations). Just make sure you exercise THE RIGHT WAY.
its better to spend time doing what I know is healthy then reading about
what others think is healthy.
