I thought I was the only one this happened to? I'd only had the flu
once, possibly twice, in my life til I began getting yearly flu shots
several years back. Now I get the flu about 3 out of 5 years, am still
sick in bed a whole week with fever, aches and dizziness, but no
respiratory symptoms.

The flu vaccine doesn't necessarily stop the flu, but it does prevent
hospitalizations due to respiratory complications.

I don't know Susan. Remember the swine flu shot and the tiny percentage
of the population that got paralyzed? I was one of those folks. It almost
cost me my flight status. I lost all my motor control on the left side of
my body. I couldn't control my left arm and left leg and my left side
facial muscles wouldn't work. They thought it was encephilitis for a
while but then they blamed it on the shot. Since then I was exempt from
taking the flu shot in the military and never took it since and never had
the flu.

The problems went away in about 3 months and while I was grounded they
sent me out to land between the lakes recreation center as the recreation
officer for 6 months - one of the most enjoyable jobs I ever had - so it
worked out well.

Wow - double yikes. I have to ask my patients if they have ever had
Guillan-Barre, and they so far have always answered what's that?
Glad you recovered :-)

Not really, I was young and invincible and invisible back then - like we
all were Will.

You remember those days.

Thanks - I used to get flight surgeons try to talk me into a flu shot
every year after that. No way.

The day after I got the Swine Flu shot was when the news reported the
affects that people were having.....I was lucky..but boy I sure worried for
awhile. I have never gotten the flu after I had my flu shot...have not even
felt bad....except a sore arm. Isn't it a dead virus they use? One shot that
did make me very ill as a child was the Small Pox Shot. My daughter actually
came down with a mild case of small pox...she still has a few scars...it was
an awful four weeks. My son had dry eczema so the Dr's gave him a waver
against the small pox shot(we were going overseas) The next year they
stopped giving it. My son is in the AF and he had to get a Small pox
shot..he even told them his sisters and my history with it and they told
him he had to have it... He got a bit sick but not to bad. He didn't know
that he had been exempted as a young child ...I told him he had been and he
said he could have had them look at his pre-military records if he had
known.

It's probably varies from individual to individual but I just never had the
flu. I think it's all the years living in third world countries as a child.
Until Diabetes the last time I was sick was with Parakeet fever when I was
7 years old in the Phillipines. The only time I've been in the hospital was
when I got my tonsiles taken out.

Hi, I am a frequent silent by-stander but finally have a question if anyone
has an answer TIA. For the first time in many years, this year the flu shot
apparently has caused quite a rise in my bs. Is this normal or should I look
for other causes. I say it is probably the shot because of the time frame.
Can anyone help me? Thanks, Ann

If it did cause a slight elevion in your BG, possibly because of
stress(inside the body , not nervousness:-) it should disappear in a day
or so. If it lasts, it may well be something else.

this is my best guess, not a medical opinion.

Any type of stress can cause a rise in blood sugars. A flu shot by
its very nature stresses the body.

(In any case, there are also a gazillion other ways to encounter stress and
boost your bG)

including the actual Flu the vaccine would've prevented.

By the way, I assume that all other things equal, that greater stress
results in greater BG? So the "area under the curve" for Flu should be
much greater (and much more dangerous) than for the Flu Vaccine?
