Default Scared, Please Help...

I just had my first blood sugar test (after fasting for 12 hours) and it
was 214... My blood pressure was 140/98. I know these numbers are not
good but I'd like to get a few opinions before I go to the doctor. Has
anybody here ever heard of blood-sugar and blood pressure numbers being
that high? Can I still be helped, or have I waited too long? Any other
suggestions or words of comfort?

Thanks.

Kevin

You have diabetes. If you are overweight and older than 21 years, most
likely you have type-2 diabetes and not type-1 (formerly know as
juvenile).

> My blood pressure was 140/98.

You have hypertension. BP higher than 135/85 is abnormal.

Yes. See this all the time.

There are medications that your doctor(s) can prescribe for you to get
both under control until you become lean and trim, losing all the
visceral adipose tissue (VAT) so that you possibly can come off the
medications:

Kevin...... my blood glucose at diagnosis was over
500 ! ! !
diabetes and high blood pressure are VERY
treatable...... go see your Dr as soon as possible
and get the meds that will help control your
diabetes

the treatment triad for diabetes is
diet/exercise/meds, and losing as little as 10% of
your body weight can leave you treating the
diabetes with diet/exercise only

I've always had reasonable blood pressure, but when I was diagnosed with
diabetes in June last year my FBG was around 300 - A1C was 11. Within a
few days of going on metformin, starting an exercise regime and modifying
my diet to restrict carbs, I was in the normal range. You certainly have a
problem, but it should definitely be manageable. After you see your doc,
I'd recommend you look at two books - "Diabetes for Dummies" and Dr.
Richard Bernstein's "Diabetes Solution". Dr. B. has been type 1 for 60
years - diabetes CAN be managed.

Hello Kevin,

Sorry you had to seek us out. First off welcome! Second.. IGNORE the trolls!
Third.. is it too late? too late for what? You definately aren't going to
die today
or tommorrow from high glucose or high BP. Both of mine have been higher
and a few times.. My glucose often is higher then that and I'm still here!

As far as waiting too long... your glucose definately shows you are diabetic
I'm
sorry to say.. though ONLY a doctor can tell you for sure. My suggestion is
to
RUN to the doctor and get properly tested including a kidney function test,
eye
test and full lipid and CBC panel for starters as a baseline for yourself.
Then
make sure you get your doctor to prescribe a meter (Ultra2 is a nice one for
starters) and prescription for strips (which is what costs the most in the
long
run) and start testing OFTEN... my suggestion is when you wake up, before
all meals, including snacks and 2hrs after all meals and before bed.
Granted
thats a lot! BUT it does help you map how food impacts your glucose. Then
after you've seen what it does, start removing foods -- or do the reverse
and
remove all foods and slowly bring them back into your diet ONLY if your
glucose
shows you can handle them. Many folks find that a brisk walk after a meal
helps reduce their glucose.

Another thing... make sure you have good health and life insurance already
because
otherwise, you're going to play HELL trying to get ANY at ALL! Reason
being, doesn't
matter how well you care for yourself.. Diabetics are proned to all sorts of
other nasty
health issues, and while diabetic complications are a "sign" of bad
control --- even some
of the best controlled diabetics can get nasty complications. While others
with horrible
control, never get complications.. it's a crap shot at best when it comes to
diabetes..

Lastly... if you need oral medications theres nothing wrong with that..
definately
not a sign of failure that you cannot control your glucose with diet and
exercise
alone. Same goes for T2's that need Insulin.

Best of luck and keep asking questions...

My blood sugar the day I was diagnosed was closse 1600 (sixteen HUNDRED), so
you're not about to croak.

As the for BP, it's not *ridiculously* high but it could use some "work".

Your doc should have you back on easy street in very short order.

Any other

Yeah, stop worrying, go see the doc and keep comong back here and you'll
soon see that your numbers aren't about to deal you the hand of death. Far
from it in fact:-)

yes, fairly often.

Not at all. As a matter of fact I think you have caught it fairly
early.

Do you trust your doctor?
Find out if he/she treats many diabetics.
If there is an endocrinologist in your area and you can get in you may
want to do that. If for no other reason then to be sure he/she agrees
with your doctor's treatment plan.

My blood pressure was 172/102 at diagnosis. I was put on Lisinopril
and HCTZ, and my BP has been normal ever since, nearly 2 years. As for
the fasting blood glucose, you need to see your doctor, asap.
Permanent damage can result to your body with readings over 140.

When I was diagnosed with diabetes, my blood glucose was 514. I was
trembling and shaking and could barely walk and think. I was
immediately put on long-lasting insulin, one shot a day, and
Metformin, a pill that helps insulin resistance as well as being very
good for your heart. In a couple weeks my numbers were much lower.
With many changes over the months to my diet and lifestyle, I am
losing weight and my numbers are mostly normal. I feel better than I
have in years.

See your doctor and get your own meter and test often; at waking,
before a meal, one hour and two hours after a meal to test what foods
spike your blood sugar and how your meds make the numbers go down.
Change your diet accordingly, either in portions or different foods.
Most diabetics cut all the "white" foods; flour, pasta, rice, taters,
and use whole grains in small portions. Eat whole fruits with fiber
instead of juice, which is flavored sugar.

Come back here often and ask questions. Ignore the trolls or use your
kill filters. You will soon learn who are the regulars with good info.

Good luck and hope to see you soon with your doctor's response to the
correct treatment for you.

Those are not fatal numbers, no matter what anybody else tells you.

After all, I was hospitalized with a blood sugar of 1200, and here I
am, 25 years later :-).

Even though your diabetes is much more "mild" than mine, it still needs
treatment.

And 140/98 would definitely be in the hypertensive range.

In fact with numbers like that you should definitely command your
health care team to do something about them. Neither is going to be
borderline, and that's a good thing, because they'll start helping you
right away.

Tim.

Hypertension is never diagnosed based on a single reading. Take readings
4 or 5 times a day over several days or a week and tabulate them. Then
take that to your doctor.

A few decades ago a "normal" reading was 100 plus your age.
Every year the numbers that define "high blood pressure" get lower in
order that the drug companies can sell more expensive drugs.
Personally, I would kill for your 140 systolic pressure, but that's
another story.

I think much the same can be said for any single blood sugar reading too.

Best of luck to you on your new journey.

Hi Kevin,

If you do in fact have a FBG of 214, you are no doubt diabetic. As far as
being able to be helped, yes there are many things that can be done in order
to help you control your BG and live a long, happy life, but there is no
cure for diabetes. Those things include medications, which your doctor will
prescribe, proper diet, exercise, and monitoring your BG with a meter.
As for the high blood pressure, your doctor also will prescribe
medications for it, and diet and exercise will help also. In some cases,
proper diet and exercise can bring blood pressure back down into normal
range, especially if you need to lose weight, and you may eventually be able
to be weaned from the medications for blood pressure. It just depends on
the individual.
In any case, please make an appointment with your doctor ASAP.
Secondly, begin learning about diabetes. Most here on the newsgroup utilize
the information given in this website:
http://www.alt-support-diabetes.org/newlydiagnosed.htm There is research
that indicates that if we keep our BGs under 140 at all times, we can avoid
those nasty diabetic complications.
Please come back and keep asking questions.

Your BP is a little high, but not all that bad. Something I found out long
ago about blood pressure readings is what is called white coat syndrome. My
BP is always elevated in the doctors office. When I check my BP at home it
is, most of the time, good. You might want to get a BP cuff and take your
own readings away from your doctor's office. I AM on medicines to keep my
pressure as low as is safe because I had congestive heart failure about two
years ago.

As far as your BG readings, your doctor will most likely prescribe medicines
for that, but again, you should get your own BG meter so you can keep watch
over it.

Kevin,

Thanks for letting us know our information helped. Made my day! Now, hang
around. There is no doubt that you will be able to help alleviate another
newly diagnosed person's fears in the near future.

And keep us updated on you.
