I applaud the intent.

However, I doubt that $1000 fine is going to deter the big
players, or even some of the small ones:

"The ban will require food providers to begin phasing out
trans fat oils by July 1, 2009. Thereafter, noncompliance
with the ban will result in fines of up to $1,000."

Over here they often use two classes of fines for this sort
of legislation; $1000 would be the fine for an individual,
like a small fast-food store owner. The fine for a business,
like McDonalds or a frozen-food manufacturer, would be
something appropriate in scale, such as $1,000,000.

Cheers, Alan, T2, Australia.

Here in California the big chains have already started or completed the
phase out. The $1000 fine would hurt the small outlets and the bad publicity
from getting fined would ruin their business. I only wish the ban would
apply to food sold in markets, I don't think it does.

it's coming.............. more and more places are setting the ban on
ALL foods that may have Trans-fats in it

next.............. hydrogenated oils!!!!!!!!!! woo hoo!

kidlet (14) has just started to seriously read the labels on foods and
we have told him that NEITHER of those types of fats is allowable in his
diet

Actually, banning all foods containing trans fats isn't as simple as
it seems. There is one trans fat that is desirable to ban.
It is elaidic acid. IMHO the ban should be specifically for that fat
alone.

I'll explain.

Olive oil contains a highly desirable cis fat called oleic acid. It
has an evil twin that has its geometry twisted into the trans form
called elaidic acid. This is the one legislators should be banning.
It is the one formed when seed oils are partially hydrogenated to give
them better cooking and storage qualities.

There are however naturally occurring trans fats that are pretty
harmless. Some even form beneficial substances eg conjugated linoleic
acid, CLA that people buy by the capsule full to encourage weight
loss.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conjugated_linoleic_acid

Where are these beneficial trans fats found? Well the most obvious
source is in dairy products such as cheese. There the transfat is
vaccinic acid. The similarity to the word vaccine comes from the
French word for cow.

>next.............. hydrogenated oils!!!!!!!!!! woo hoo!

Already the chemists have been hard at work attempting to avoid the
ban on transfats. It is suggested some of their "solutions" may be
just as bad. At the moment I can't comment on that speculation. The
truth is likely to take a long time to emerge for much the same
reasons just as it did with partially hydrogenated oils.

Where possible I'm sticking to oils that have a minimum of processing
eg extra virgin olive oil. IMHO it is better to avoid a possible
problem than to gamble.

He's lucky to have a mum who cares enough to educate him in such
matters.

Best wishes,

That should be vaccenic acid (not vaccinic) - which wikipedia says is
converted to a CLA, which could have beneficial effects.

Now I have to delete vaccinic from my spell checker. Darn.

Thanks Philip. Spelling is important especially in these days when
people use words to feed search engines. OK, its true that some of
them now ask "Do you mean "vaccenic acid?"

I must have been misspelling it for as while since vaccenic acid still
looks odd to me. WOW, it now looks so natural. I guess the brain
adapts rapidly given a chance.

Thanks once again.
