| | | Screwed up again... Rainy day. Home. Wife at work. Kids at school. Hungry. Cupboards
are empty. There IS, however, some fresh raviolli in the fridge. I
boil up a plate, knowing that I shouldn't. 13.5. Downstairs to the
treadmill... (The worse thing is that I was eating like this all the
time prior to dx.)
How depressing this blood testing can be.

IMO, it's better to know what happens than not.
I *always* test when I cheat. I still get to decide if a cheat is worth
it or not, but want to *know* what I'm deciding.

Keep some nuts in the pantry for moments like that or try to
make sure there are always some eggs in the pantry or
fridge. An omelette is quicker to cook than ravioli.
Preferably, keep the fridge well-stocked.

Thank you. I feel better now after a good work out. Who knows, I may
have put off the work out if I had not cheated with the raviolli.... |

Good ideas. Thursday morning is a bad time for the fridge. We get
organic vegetables delievered Thursday evening every week. The fridge
is at its emptiest today. |

And the good news is that you're not eating like this all the time, and
that you got on the treadmill.
Next time you get a yen, make the ravioli a side portion and eat
something low carb as the main feature, and see if your numbers are better.

Heh. Thanks Wendy. I guess I a better question would have been: What
does a swing like that mean? Is it good to be able to bring it down so
far so fast, or does it mean it is out of control?

Yep. Welcome to the Roller-coaster of reactive hypos.
I liken it to noisy parties. If someone calls the cops
because of the noise at 1am, they turn up at 3 am. But all
the revelers have gone home at 2am or passed out and there
is no longer any disturbance. So they arrest the people who
rang for wasting Police time.
My insulin/glucose system is like that. The excess glucose
is the noisy party and my insulin arrives late when the
party is over and sends me low.
The way I stopped that was to try not to send it high in the
first place.

I get mine on Wednesdays. Come Tuesday, the only stuff left is the stuff we
didn't want to begin with. This week I screwed up and got a Carnival
Squash. I thought I substituted something else for that. Either I didn't
or they messed up. Either way, it will make a nice Thanksgiving decoration
for my porch. |

I can no longer eat Ravioli because I am allergic to eggs and dairy. But it
used to be one food that worked quite well for me. I had to watch my
portion size though. Could be 5 to 7 Raviolis, depending on the size. |

Yes. Or one or the other of your tests wasn't right. Could be your hands
weren't clean for the high or you didn't get enough blood on the strip for
the low. |

There is a big temptation not to test after you know you've eaten something
you shouldn't have. The feeling is that at least you won't be upset.
Unfortunately I've done that at times. A workout is a good "quick fix"
solution. It blows most of the high bg away. As long as you can avoid
repeating the mistake too often. I "cheated" today at dinner, meaning I took
advantage of my insulin to eat stuff I shouldn't have. At least that came
after a 12 mile bike ride in fairly warm weather with a head wind against
me. I'll try to be good this weekend.

Just seconding Alan here. My system works like that too. REALLY HATE
those lows. It keeps me in line most of the time.
It's a new day Andy, and you're learning.

+1 on this -- and while you're waiting for tomorrow to come, go to the
grocery store and stock up on quickie grazing snacks for when you want
to raid the fridge.
Nice work testing, too -- it's better to know than to guess and hope
it's not as bad as you think it is. ;-)
