Default Side effects => Diabetes

Does anyone know of a list of medicines that can cause diabetes as a side
effect?

I remember that some blood-pressure meds, or maybe anti-inflammatory
painkillers were implicated. Trying to find a link to compiled info instead
of looking up each med one by one.

Prednisone! Prednisolone (depending on where you live etc.)3 months into
taking fairly large doses and before tapering off - I was diabetic. It
is hoped that if I can get of the steroid my diabetes 'may' disappear. I
would not go back on my former diet, no matter what!

Don't have an actual list. Beta Blockers are the BP meds.

Coreg is a better beta-blocker as it lowers bg and reduces insulin
resistance.

It's also wicked expensive.

A generic for Coreg was introduced last month. It is CARVEDILOL.

It costs very little by comparison. Something like $10.00 or $15.00 for 30
pills?

With my insurance, it will cost me only $4.00 for 60 pills instead of
$30.00.

Thanks for the link.

This whittles down the reading list.

Kewlness! I shall have to nag my pharmacy to make sure they carry it.

The Coreg is very expensive - it was well over $100 for 30 pills.

Just got Humana's Medicare Part D formulary and Coreg is going from tier 2
to tier 3 next year. They are also putting a quantity limit on it. I need to
take 60 pills a month and all Humana will allow is 30. I would have to pay
full price for that other 30 pills myself.

Carvedilol is not listed in the book Humana sent me, but it is listed on
their formulary on line.

Humana has also put a limit of 30 pills on Benicar and I need 60 a month. If
I stay with Humana, which I doubt, I would have to pay full price for those
other 30 pills also.

Seems to me Humana is trying to price itself out of the Medicare Part D
business.

A lot of medicines can cause diabetes: most beta blockers used for
high blood pressure can have that effect. Atenolol one of the most
widely given has been shown to increase the risk by 50% Coreg is an
exception it is at least neutral in this regard and may be beneficial.
Diuretics also increase the risk. Conversely ARBS tend to lower the
risk.

Thanks Vince

Yep I can attest to that - it wasnt till I was swapped from prednisolone
tablets to "Betamethasone tablets" that I became diabetic but when you have
no choice diabetes will always come second to breathing or your heart
beating !!

Pardon the very late follow-up.

Finally got in to see my Dr.

Requested a change from Tenormin to Carvedilol. He instead switched me to
Lisinopril because it has a very low rate of renal complications. Can't
argue with that.

I've been away awhile. Divorce, and a cross-country move just to name some
of the major reasons I have been away. Have been mostly lurking, but after
seeing you mention the Lisinopril and Coreg/Carvedilol Stumpy, I felt
compelled to post.

Without going into a long winded diatribe, there are some other side-effects
you may or may not have been informed about. Especially the Lisinopril.
These are the most prevalent, and the ones that I personally had.

Trouble breathing. Felt like I was trying to inhale water.
Deep unproductive cough
Severe Muscle Spasms
Facial swelling(Coreg)

For more on the lisinopril, go here...

http://www.pharmaceuticalworld.com/f...topic/6/3.html

Fortunately my new doc listens to me, and took me off of these and put me on
Cozaar. Hopefully, you won't have to experience the stuff that I did.

Well, at least it looks like the potential side effects are quick to show
themselves. I try it starting today.

I haven't had any side effects from Lisinopril. I've been on it for 6
months. It's an ACE inhibitor.

I'm on the Carvedilol in addition to the Lisinopril; when I requested
it, it was to replace Metoprolol. These are both beta-blockers, but
Carvedilol is better for bg control.

So you were switched to a different class of drugs, not just a different
med; probably for the kindey-protective effects of ACE inhibitors.

Even on both, my bp isn't at the goal the cardiologist wants yet. He
wants me under 110/70 and it's rare for me to measure that low; pretty
much only after exercise is it ever below his goal.

Been taking Coreg for more than 2 years without any problems at all.

Am converting over to the Coreg generic, Carvedilol, due to the cost
savings.

Now, if I can get my doctor to find a substitute for Benicar, I'll be much
better off financially.

Indeed. Unfortunately for me, I was slow on the uptake though...

I have severe allergies, and attributed the side effects as reactions to new
pollens in Michigan and Nevada. I am normally very anal about researching
any new meds that I am placed on for that very reason. Due to the move
however, I only gave them a cursory glance. Suffice it to say, I will not
make THAT mistake again.

I take Lisinopril. I was changed from Propranolol to it.

For those that can take it, it is a wonderful drug from what I have been
told. Reason I was put on it, was that an abnormality was found on my last
EKG. Doc diagnosed Ischemic Heart Disease, and the cardiologist said I had a
heart attack. I was obviously a bit surprised as I didn't even know I had
it.
