Default Sigh.. another binge

I've got to work up the willpower to tell my wife to NOT let me eat pizza.

Funny thing is, pizza has never been one of my favorite foods, but since my
diagnosis, for some reason it's too heavenly. Maybe because I'm so sick of
salads. I'm the poster formerly known as Frisbee for those of you keeping
score at home.

My numbers aren't awful. They're high, but it's been higher. Pre was
around 117 or so, I think, usually I'm under 100 around dinner time. One
hour was 167. I haven't taken another reading yet.

Barbecue chicken pizza from Papa Johns. Thin crust. I had five slices. I
do not have the willpower to stop at two, or even three. I also had one
slice of regular crust pepperoni. About 1/2 hour later, I felt like crap.
I still do now.

On the bright side (if there is one) I haven't had the desire to eat
anything else this evening at all. I could have eaten both pizzas entirely.

Sheesh, they're like Lays Potato Chips. No-one can eat just one slice.

Sex is like pizza.
When it's good, it's really, really good.
When it's bad, it's still pretty dang good.

Maybe I should have sex instead of pizza.

Now if only I could convince my wife of that...

She'd probably suggest that I go ahead and start without her.

Doc, I don't know whether perhaps you chose to ignore my wishes, or maybe
you just don't care, but I've asked you nicely to please stop cross-posting
replies to my posts. I honestly don't know whether you're a kook or not, or
maybe just a misunderstood person, but I try to give you the benefit of the
doubt here, at the risk of being killfiled (oh, dear) by others here simply
by responding to you. You've already stated your reasons to cross-post to
the cardiology group, but I do not appreciate it, and I wish you would stop
doing that with my threads. Not that I -own- the thread, but I find it
highly annoying. If I wanted my thread in the cardiology group, I'd
crosspost it there myself. Can you please try to understand that?

I really want to believe that you're not the complete kook that you come
across as, Andrew. Show some people a little respect and perhaps you'll
start getting some in return.

This is one of many reasons I wish you would stop cross-posting replies to
my messages, Dr. Chung.

The problem with pizza is it can cause a spike waaaay later. I mean later
than 2 hours. So your 1 hour numbers aren't that important. They're likely
to be low compared to what comes later.

I don't much like pizza either. Never did. Now that I know of my food
allergies, I make a pizza on a rice shell crust with rice cheese and
vegetables. It's okay. Wouldn't really go out of my way for it, but it's
something I can make and eat quickly. Since I am making it, there is only
just the one small pizza and nothing to tempt me to eat more.

When I used to buy pizza (which wasn't often), I would either buy it by the
slice (could do that easily in NYC and some other places) or I would eat
only one slice with the crust and then eat just the top part off of another
slice. It was rare that I would ever be tempted to eat more than 2 pieces.
Unless they were really small pieces. Chuck E. Cheese was the exception.
If you can call that pizza. More like cardboard with some psuedo cheese on
it.

I don't like potato chips either. So I would be that person who would eat
just one. Then I'd be asking myself why I ate it. Actually when I was
younger, I simply could not eat potato chips at all. If I ate one, I would
get painful canker sores in my mouth. That doesn't happen any more, but I
just don't like them in general. One exception is a thick chip fried in
olive oil with sea salt on it. I can't remember the brand. They're very
expensive and come in a small bag. I buy them during the summer and eat
them with hummus while I watch the free concerts at a local grocery store.

Just killfile him and be done with it. He won't listen to you and you'll
wind up in people's killfiles for replying to him.

So, here's the thing. If you're at 110 premeal, that's a sign not to
eat carbs at that meal, or to eat non starchy veggie carbs.

Well, yeah, my husband, who low carbs for health (he's slim, non DM)
eats just one slice about once or twice per month, then he eats the
toppings off another slice or two if he's still hungry. I just eat the
topping, period, and the tip of a slice with crust.

It sounds as if you may've eaten kind of fast, in a bit of a frenzy, and
didn't have time to get signals from your brain that your stomach was full.

Bill,

You'll usually find that if you just eat the toppings off the pizza
and leave the bread & crust, you can fill up without driving your
numbers up very much.

I do.

> About 1/2 hour later, I felt like crap. I still do now.

So walk around the block a few times. When I've overindulged, even
light exercise drives my numbers down fairly rapidly (roughly down 1
mg/dl per minute of walking.)

The thing is, if you ever develop complications that do not go away and
markedly affect your day to day life, you WILL regret the bingeing and
wished you hadnt done it in the first place.

There vast amounts of different and exciting foods you can eat, other than
salads. And pizza is okay, if you eat it in moderate portions.

This is about having a long think about exactly what damage you want to do
to your body and either praying it may never happen or crossing that bridge
when you come to it - either way, if damage is done - IT'S TOO LATE!

Well, how lively are you going to be with all that pizza stuffed into
yourself? Maybe best to start AND finish without her. ;-)

Hey Bill,

I've got the same thing with french fries as you do with pizza. No
way to stop once I start, so I just don't start. Wish I could give
some profoundly sage advice, but all I've got to offer is sympathy.

I shall lve he discussion about sex out of this. but as for the pizza:-)

Can yu get just a slice or two a the pizza place? We have that if you go
to the pizza place. If you do that you won't be tempted with all the
other pieces hanging around. then have something else to eat to fill you
up.

Good luck!

G'day G'day Bill,

Rather than attempting to reinvent the wheel some people follow the
simple dictum of modeling those people who find dieting no problem at
all. Rather than copying people who are always dieting because they
DO have problems with food management it is so much wiser to model
those who for some seemingly magical reason don't seem to need to diet
ever.

When these people were asked what they did in selecting which food to
eat at a cafe their response was simple. They omitted questions like
which would taste nice etc.

They went straight to what would they FEEL LIKE IN HALF AN HOUR?

It seems like part of you has the necessary wisdom to make wise
choices.

Best wishes on a successful revolution.

Okay -- baby steps, then. First, work up the will power to tell your
wife not to let you eat pizza. Then, work up the will power to not
eat the pizza. ;-)

Did you take another reading? Was it better or worse than you
expected?

OMG -- that sounds so good (the BBQ chicken part -- not the feeling
like crap part). Haven't been to Papa John's in a long, long time and
didn't know they had that. No wonder you were weak. ;-)

Just eat the toppings and leave the crust? Though, depending on
what's in the BBQ sauce on the chicken, that might not help that much
-- but I'm sure it *would* help some!

LOL!!!

Good luck to you!!!

Bill, I love pizza too. It was my favorite food pre Dx. Through extensive
testing, I've determined that my BG peaks at 2 hours after eating pizza and
I can safely eat 2 slices (and a salad!) and have peak PP numbers under 130.
It's not easy limiting myself to two slices of pizza, but when I consider
the alternative: Going blind, say, or having a leg lopped off, it sorta
gives my willpower a boost.

PS, try a glass of red wine with your pizza...you'll be reaping the
benefits of additional resveratrol, antioxidants....a little buzzz and it
tastes great! AND......it tends to lower your BGs a tad.

BTW, I've tested pizza several times up to 5 hours out, every half hour.
Some folks don't peak until many hours after eating it. My peak is 2 hours,
yours may be different.

I did take another reading, and I was expecting it to be higher, and it was.
If memory serves, it was around 217 or so. Strangely, I didn't feel any
better or worse physically than the previous reading.

Yellow belt? Cool. It's been (sigh) 30 years since I took karate classes.
I made blue belt, and the dojo folded, else I might have kept taking it up.

Thanks, Quenton. You have the coolest name, by the way.

You're right on several levels. I do know better and I can do better. It's
not unlike trying to quit smoking for me, though. I know what cigarettes do
to me, yet I haven't the guts to go through the hell it takes to quit, even
though I know the consequences of not quitting are worse. Illogical. Were
I able to get a chocolate shake, I would down that as well, even knowing the
consequences, sigh. Good thing there's no Arby's nearby. And good thing I
don't drive, because I won't walk ten miles to get a milkshake, at least not
at night.

Wine... now there's a good idea. I generally do not drink alcohol, but the
idea of having a glass of wine with dinner does sound nice. I believe I'll
bounce this off my wife and see if it sticks.

Hey Bill,

I've got the same thing with french fries as you do with pizza. No
way to stop once I start, so I just don't start. Wish I could give
some profoundly sage advice, but all I've got to offer is sympathy.

Best regards,

He's made that abundantly clear, so there goes his benefit of the doubt.
Shame what religion -can- do to some people. All one needs to do is reason
that it's what "God" wants, and they're justified in anything.

While the exercise suggestion is sincerely appreciated, there are two
reasons I could not follow that advice. 1) it was nighttime and 2) I'm
night blind.

I guess I'll just need to binge during daylight hours :-)

It's delivery, so, no. I just need to grow a spine and discipline myself to
limit myself to two slices. It's not like I can't. I have in the past, but
last night it was just sooooooo good, willpower went out the window.

Yes, I've always had those problems. I'm a natural fast eater, and last
night was no exception. I had to gulp it down because I knew if my wife
caught me, I'd get an earfull. And I've always had the problem of the brain
signaling that I'm full is way late. Even before dx, that was a problem for
me. I would be convinced I was still hungry even though I felt bloated at
the same time. Kind of like shortly before being diagnosed where you'd feel
thirsty, but if you drank another drop you'd explode.

I don't ever killfile anyone, but that's just my own personal choice. As to
the latter, I've never been concerned about becoming the victim of someone
else's killfile either. However, in this instance, there should be no need
to worry about that anyway. I attempted to reason with him and discovered
that he is most unreasonable. The benefit of the doubt was lost on him
completely. Shame, really.

That's too bad! Darnit! You're probably not really surprised though,
right?

I don't know what the threshold is, but I'm either feeling good or
feeling bad -- don't have levels of "bad" depending on what the BG is.
I let it get just a little bit high, it might as well be 300 --
doesn't seem to matter.

>Yellow belt? Cool. It's been (sigh) 30 years since I took karate classes.

Thanks! I was supposed to test for my next belt last weekend, but it
didn't work out. Took me a week to manage it, but I finally sabatoged
myself, but good. Hopefully, I'll get it done in March.

That's too bad about your dojo. My son's a blue belt now, and it's
really the first one that's presenting a challenge for him.

You should take it up again! Impress all the young whipper snappers!

You certainly overdid the pizza, but Papa Johns is not like real pizza
that is much bigger. I have pizza about once a month. I get one slice
with different toppings such as chicken and vegetables, chicken and
tomato etc. I eat that with a salad and I am very satisfied, I dont
eat the back crust. Eating this way doesnt spike me.

Dont order in pizzas, they are too dangerous . Go to a real pizza
parlor and have one slice of the real thing jmo
