It was still dark when my son, 7, whispered in my ear, "Dad, can i go
watch a show?" I grunted yes and rolled over. My wife murmured,
half-asleep, isn't it too early for him to be out of bed? I rolled over
and looked at the clock. 6:15 AM. Not too bad. The later sunrises this
fall are starting to get to us.
I am cursed in that once I wake up, I do not go back to sleep no matter
what I do. So, I rollever over and grabbed my testing kit. My Ultra2
told me I was 109 mg/dl. "Huh," I muttered to my wife, "I guess I've got
the DP this morning."
At least I knew I didn't have to drink half a glass of OJ before I set
off.
At 7:45, after the school bus too my son away from me, I began my
morning walk around the neighborhood. It was slightly humid but
pleasant. I walked listening to Walter Isaacson's "Einstein" as I went
along. About the time Einstein got his girlfriend Pregnant in 1901, I
was back home. I sat for a few minutes doing a few day-prep activities
at my computer and grabbed my testing kit. 109 mg/dl. Huh. No change
from before? Weird.
I spent my morning working in my home office. Conference calls,
spreadsheets, project meetings, spreadsheets, instant messaging,
spreadsheets. I also worked on spreadsheets. I ate some lunch, peanuts,
whole wheat bread with fake (but tasty) non-hydrogenated butter, and
water. An hour later, I grabbed my testing kit. 109 mg/dl. OK, that's
getting weird.
I grabbed the control solution and another strip. 124 mg/dl. Just inside
the test range that runs to 128 mg/dl. OK. So, it's working. I'm just
having a weird day. I know! I'll mess with it. I opened the fridge and
grabbed out a slice of the incredible Apple Pie i baked on Sunday. Every
time I've had a slice it ran me up to 120 mg/dl and kept me there
through my 1-hour post-prandial through my 2-hour post-prandial. I ate a
slice and smiled a smug smile. This time I'd get my glucometer.
An hour later, I tested. 105 mg/dl. What? How dare it! Now I'm getting
mad!
I go into the fridge and find the leftover chocolate cake from my wife's
remedial birthday (it was a month ago but the restaurant didn't do
candles or singing so we got this cake to make it up to her). I had a
slice...
To be continued...
-A, clearly very bored today
