AIC 6/07 is 5.4
diagnosed 7/06
i just moved to a different state. no doc...no medical coverage...yet.
dunno when
anyway...my bs has been going nuts from the stress. went up to 184.i
took an ativan, half a lunesta & knocked myself out that night.
my Q is this: we can't adjust our meds (like compensating with a dif
measured dose of insulin), and it didnt matter what i ate...beef...no
bread...no carbs & it was still up there. so what to do? how does one
bring it down? do we just ride it ot & pray hard.

that number may not seem high to some but to me its way off my norm.

Without meds, all you have is diet and exercise. I do recall about a year
ago on father's day when I had a small snack at father's day brunch at
church. Got home, checked BG - it was around 160 - bicycled 20 miles - it
was down around 100. |

If you can't run or it's raining or you don't feel like going outside,
someone posted a while ago about cheap ($40) mini-steppers at Wal-Mart
(and Amazon and ... ). But even better, if you have it, look around
on craigslist; there are a lot of good-quality unused ones in
people's garages, going for cheap |

Would suggest you start treating your food as a med.
Just as you know the weight of your meds...
.... you would wise to know the weight of your meals: http://HeartMDPhD.com/HolySpirit/Healing
Then you can eat less, down to the optimal amount in order to lose the
VAT and cure the MetS.
As you become healthier with less VAT, you will become hungrier.
It is the world's great lie that hunger is bad that keeps us from
easily doing this: http://HeartMDPhD.com/press.asp
Be hungry... be healthy... be blessed.

There really isn't any quick way to bring it down with meds. You might try
exercise. I find that bitter melon helps me. Doesn't seem to work for
everyone. And I'm not convinced that it's safe to use so not something I'd
use on a regular basis. |

Aha! Then perhaps you actually went low, had a liver dump and then went up
high again. Perhaps you should have had some carbs with that meal. I find
if I don't eat enough carbs, my BG goes too high. |

Insulin can be bought without an Rx. I've always been able to buy
syringes with my insulin too without an Rx, but was surprised to find
that an Rx is actually required for syringes.
I have also bought metformin from an online mexican pharmacy. email
me at kclaytor2 at yahoo dot com if you want the url. You could also
just do a web search on the name of the med that you were taking to
buy some again. I medicated myself for several years when I had no
insurance. It is better to have doctors because they can order tests
(it is illegal to order your own tests here in California), but I
think I am better of having controlled my blood sugars during that
period of my life than if I hadn't because I had no insurance.
But the other suggestions of diet and exercise are great suggestions.

Witchy,
Since you were so physically active before the high BG reading, I
wonder if you suffered a liver dump. Even if you're doing everything
else the same--eating at the same time, eating the same things, if you
are more physically active than the norm, it's possible your BG could
have dropped a little lower than usual, and then your liver decided to
"help out".
Maybe while you're working your butt off unpacking, you need more
frequent snacks. Just a thought.

Too much self-administered insulin can be lethal especially for
someone with a HgbA1c of 5.4.
Hypoglycemic shock from exogeneous insulin can kill much quicker than
elevated PP-BGs in the setting of normal FBGs.

I wish I had your fortitude .. I cound't allow myself such temptation.
Today, we went out shopping for clothes - BABY clothes .
I have to say to non-regular readers of my posts that our baby is
due in December .. there is a big box in our living room with tons
of 'baby loot' ... and I pay for it and I get to play with none of it ..
yet.
I am amazed the technology you can throw money at to soothe the
inner self of one's spouse!
Still, we did get a couple of sober maternity dresses that were badly
needed (I've heard "Does my tummy show yet?" for 6 weeks now and
she's 14 weeks pregnant)
I got a simple meal in an Italian restaurant 'fully expecting my BG to
go up - due to all the walking & perspiration, it actually went down
compared to my after-breakfast measure, so maybe I am rewarded for
my patience, forbearance and suffering ?
More later ...

Well, Witchy Way was doing some hard work - she needed some snacks!
But fortitude, I find, is a function of a properly functioning liver
and owning a "full" feeling. You never know, you might get one too, as
you get good control and the weight comes off. It literally was a
revelation to me when I realised what people meant when they said they
couldn't eat another bite. It had never happened to me in my life
before!

| | | Re: T2's: need input I hate to agree with the nutcase troll about anything, but unless you
know a lot about insulin, I'd not suggest buying it on your own. If
you don't know how to give yourself shots, it's best to have someone
who can teach you. There's a lot to understand about the various
insulins and the times they work and how to figure doses and such...
even doctors fuck it up and accidentally kill people now and again.
Insulin is not something to mess with if you don't know a great deal
about it.
My bottles of Lantus cost a bit over $80 US each. It's cheaper than
that to see most doctors and get some expertise added into the
equation.
You can have high readings for any number of reasons as people have
suggested... a liver dump, changes in exercise or routine, an
infection, etc. If you had insurance, I'd suggest asking your doctor
about using insulin temporarily to keep your numbers down. But since
you don't have insurance, I'd suggest just monitoring it and giving it
a few days to see how it goes.
Obviously, stick to low-carb, but even doing so may not bring it down,
depending on why it's up. Exercise may lower or raise you... it all
depends. Your body can make lots and lots of glucose from protein...
even if you're fasting... so if your body is out-of-wack, you just may
have high readings for a bit.
If it's still up in a week or so, or if it goes REALLY high (like over
200 or so even on low-carb), I'd suggest you need to beg, borrow or
steal the money to get yourself to a doctor.
Call the local hospital... they'll usually know if there's any low-
cost or sliding-scale clinics in your area.
But... don't just let it go. If bg stays high even when fasting... it
means your body is burning muscle (which may well include heart
muscle), the proteins in your blood are getting sticky (because
they're all glycoslyated) and therefore potentially causing blockages,
your lipids are going wonky and also helping blockages along, and your
blood itself is getting thicker (think the difference in consistency
between water and syrup).
I'm not trying to panic you... a single reading in the 180's is highly
unlikely to mean you're going to fall over with a heart attack any
minute. But... I'd not let it go on for more than a few days, maybe a
week, without getting medical care.
And keep in mind... being on insulin temporarily may well prevent you
having to be on it permanently! High bg kills beta cells and worsens
insulin resistance... so letting high bg go on means your diabetes is
progressing. |

G'day G'day Witchy Way,
Hey, I still trying to get my mind around someone called Witchy Way
who prays. Whatever. It's a habit of mine to notice things and wonder
perhaps more than I should.
Often people make a post asking a question while providing the most
relevant information for the answer. You mention that your blood
glucose is going nuts from the stress. Let's say for the moment that
this is indeed the most important factor. It makes sense to ask
questions as you've done, select the most applicable advice on how to
bring about good control AND to do some relaxation exercises to bring
about a natural reduction in stress.

Hi Frank,
Yep, you've got time to make your adjustments--and besides being good
for you, it will be good for the kidlet to learn better nutrition
habits than most of us had before we discovered our BG problems.
So are you and your wife going to learn the gender of the baby before
he/she arrives, or are you going for the surprise?
Best regards,
Michelle C., T2

| | | Re: T2's: need input Naaah, we'll find out at the next echography.
My wife has started collecting 'kids loot' for the birth ...
from rattles and jumper suits to little socks and stuff
(don't worry - I pay).
MIL will send some maternity wear in time for
wife's birthday, in August.
The last echography, prev.Friday, was for week 13 and
the image was blurred, so either the kid has gas, or it's
real mess in his room.
My wife saw the chord it's attached to ... not very modern -
I was hoping for a new, chordless model ... ))
